Ok Philly.. The boys are warmed up and heading your way.. Get ready to have your faces melted.
Three time witness to the comeback of the MIGHTY VAN HALEN. And then they faded back into obscurity.

A-fucking-men. If you think you know how the show's going to be, think again.

In a good way, of course....

          FUCK!

          T-minus 10 hours and counting.

I took today off from work and I'm starting to think that I should have gone in just to get my mind off of the upcoming show.

But I probably wouldn't have accomplished anything...

OKAY WHERE DO I START!!!!!! First off to all the naysayers Roth sang his ass off. He is taking this tour very seriously as if it were his own child. The guy is a member of a dying breed of Rock and Roll frontmen who has been given the chance to continue a great tradition with the likes of Jaggar, Mercury and Ozzy. He was an entertaining consumate professional and ring leader to what is now at this moment The Greatest Rock and Roll show going.
Edward was on, but boy the big screen video monitor didn't hide the wear and tear of years of alcoholism and others abuses. Being a fan since 1980 it was just kind of hard to see that this Rock/Guitar god is actually a mortal man. What made up for his age was his smile and enthusiasm. The guy really looked happy and comfortable playing along side The Diamond One. Although 23 years had passed the chemistry between and Ed and Dave had magically reappeared as if Dave had never left. As far as tone went, it was raw just like the old days. He mainly used that sun burst proto type, but the fender Frankentein he used on Little Guitars was just smokin. I could not figure out why he did not use that for most of the show. He also broke out the Charvels which sounded good also. There were a few rig flubs but I am sure that minor stuff will be worked out. It was actually refreshing to hear some mistakes, unlike a bullshit prerecorded Hip Hop show. All in all Ed delivered and it was a pleasure seeing him play with such passion again.
The Teen Wolf really held his own. I have to admit I was mostly focused on Dave and Ed but the kid played well and his back up vocals went over with out a hitch. His deeper voice really filled out the back with his dad supporting him. DTNA was outstanding. Any problems jumping out of key were repaired in rehearsals. I have to give the kid credit, he did not fold like a lawn chair like most avid Anthony supporters thought. You could tell that Dave and Ed coached him well.
Never been a big fan of the drum solo, but Alex really did a tasty solo that did not go overboard. I really enjoyed it and so did the rest of the fans. What was neat were some sampling of VH songs that were triggered throughout the solo.
Funny, I didn't hear or see anyone cheering to hear Van Hagar tunes. Sorry Spambo, read what you said in a previous post and for two solid hours classic Van Halen ruled. Hope I gave a decent review, I am running on about 3 hours sleep. I am not a tech nut so I hope someone caught some pics and clips of the show. It was hilarious how many cell phones were being held up in the crowd. I guess the day of the lighter is over. I highly recommend seeing this show if it comes to your town, hell take a road trip if you have to, I did. No it is not the original line up, but hey its not 1978 either. Like Dave sang, change nothin stays the same, unchained and you hit the ground runnin. This new band has hit the ground runnin. Catch em at an arena near you.

What a show! What a mind-blowing experience. It was beyond my ability to express in words. Throughout the show, thoughts were streaming through my mind. Thoughts of appreciation and awe. Thoughts of my teenage years. Thoughts of complete satisfaction and stunned amazement.

I was born in 1969. My first vinyl record was Van Halen's first, and I bought every record right up to 1984. I bought every copy of Circus magazine (do they even publish that magazine anymore?) that had Eddie and/or David in it. Van Halen are my Beatles/Elvis/Rolling Stones!

I still remember where I was when I heard that David Lee Roth was out of the band. And I waiting 23 years to see them play together! I was 15 or 16 when they broke up and I never got to see them in concert. I never thought it would happen in my lifetime! I silently protested Van Hagar. Even though I saw them in 1986, I never acknowledged Sammy as the front man. Van Halen is only Van Halen when David Lee Roth is at the mic.

So my expectations were very high last night. I’ve seen some great concerts over the years. Recently, I was blown away by the White Stripes and The Who. What I saw last night was a mind-blowing, high-energy, 2+ hour of machinegun assault of what seemed like more than 20 of the greatest rock and roll songs ever played! It was truly like watching the mightiest of all Gods dazzling with their talents. I’m not overstating it here. Only one word can describe it: Unfuckingbelievable!!!!

These guys are in top form. They are in unbelievable shape. I wish I was in half as good shape as David and Eddie. They are ripped. And for them to perform at the level they did for over two hours is astonishing at ANY age, let alone their fifties. David’s voice was so strong. I honestly don’t know how he can belt it out for 2+ hours like he did. And I swore Eddie’s fingers were either going to fall off or spontaneously combust at some point during the night. The beautiful sounds he made with the guitar and the dazzling finger work were unbelievable. He wore no shirt, white beach-like pants and red shoes with the Frankenstein guitar stripes. David wore the outfits we’ve seen in the photos posted here. Wolf wore all black.

About Wolf. He can really play! And I must say, I didn’t miss Michael at all. Why you may ask? A couple of reasons. First, Wolf carried the background vocals really well and can really play. But this show had something much more important and much more special that no show with Michael Anthony could have….

Watching the interaction between Eddie and Wolf is downright moving. Watching Eddie and Wolf play together on stage was like peering through a window in their home on Christmas morning and seeing some personal happy family memories in the making. They were playful together. They laughed and smiled at each other a lot. They frequently went to each other’s side of the stage and played and sang in the same mic. Eddie kissed Wolf and patted him on the head. I was up on the side with binoculars and that admiration and love continued behind the stage when they broke at parts of the show. It was genuine. Wolf went up to the drum riser with Uncle Alex during Eddie’s solo. Just really great stuff.

Eddie and David really got along. They were obviously emotionally moved by the outpouring of love from the fans. The crowd noise and reaction at the start of the show and throughout the show was deafening. The band broke at I’m The One You Love and the cheers went on forever and David and Eddie hugged and looked at each other.

Eddie solo was amazing. Loved hearing Cathedral and Eruption and all the great noises he can make with a guitar. The set was sprinkled with Eddie and David going back and forth making noises. David would make a motorcycle sound with his mouth and then Eddie would outdo it with the guitar. No one can make a guitar sound like Eddie can. It was captivating.

David told this funny story while he was the only one on stage before performing Ice Cream man about how they would roll joints on a Pink Floyd allbum – they never listened to the album. And they used the Ice Cream truck to store beer. Then they played a fantastic version of Ice Cream Man.

We heard every song we could want to hear. I'm not good at remembering setlists. But they played a lot of songs! All great songs. Songs you never thought you'd get to hear in concert during your lifetime. I especially like Little Guitars, which is still going through my head.

I could do without some of the props, like the giant chains and especially the huge inflatable microphone at the end during Jump. The show really stands on its own and doesn’t need those corny props.

                            A few other random notes:

During And The Cradle Will Rock, David says “Have you seen Wolfie’s grades?” It was very funny.

During Unchained, Wolfie says “Come Dave, give me a break… seriously, give me a break Dave.” Also funny.

This show was INCREDIBLY WELL REHEARSED! Nothing was out of place. Nothing went to chance. These guys were totally prepared. Very professional. And I don’t know who put together the stage production, but they ought to be running the war in Iraq, because that stage production was complicated, sophisticated and flawless. The camera work and camera angles, the props on cue, the giant screen, the retractable lights and cameras from the rigging on the ceiling, the lasers, the stage entrances and ladders and rest areas during the solos on the sides fo the stage. All perfect.

I had binoculars and could see everything very clearly. Just water and Gatorade on the stage as one would expect. These guys were serious. All business. Sounded better than ever. Lots of genuine love between Dave and the band, Eddie and Wolf.

In summary, if you can see this show, just see it. It does not disappoint even the highest expectations. After the show, I felt like I had finally crossed something off my list that I needed to do before I die. 23 years of waiting and it was worth it. I saw the Gods of rock together, happy, healthy, doing what they do better than anyone else. They put it all out there. 100%. Nothing held back. It is just UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE!

The show was so amazing that it's difficult to put into words how I felt about it, I mean it went so fast 2 hours felt like 15 minutes I was having such a great time.

Dave was the man, Ed was in his glory, Alex brought it, and Wolf did a great job. I have to admit I did think about Michael being there a few times, but the family vibe on stage and the interaction with Ed and Wolf, and Dave gave this show something special.

I'm not gonna go into detail on this one, but I had 14th row on Ed's side thanks to Mambo, THANK YOU MAN!!!! You are awesome!!!!

I was also about 1 row from the ramp as well, so that gives it that little bit extra push of getting that 1st or 2nd row feel for a moment or two.

The vocals were real, but there was some enhancement via processor to thicken up the tone a bit I think.

Wow, that was the best I have heard Dave sing in the recent years, he brought his A game for sure.

                                Go to this show!
