I flew out from the United Kingdom to see the band play together. I openly wept with joy at seeing with my own eyes DLR and EVH on the same stage together.
WVH has real character and Roth clearly enjoys having him around. Eddie isn't getting any younger, but who is? He can still do the licks which made him the man who inspired millions of people to pick up the thing and play it for themselves - forever hunting down 'that' sound and never quite finding it.
In any other chat forum on the entire internet, talking about any other band in the entire world, the following sentence would be a pointless aside - but in this band's case it says it all...
They turned up and played brilliantly together, like a real band and it might never happen again! There's a real intimacy to the stage design which, from up in the only seats I could get tickets for, really showed off how close to Alex's kit Eddie likes to be. It was almost as if, despite being in a huge arena, the band wanted to play on-top of each other like back in the smoky bar-room and club days - a real nice touch, although I wasn't the only one a little confused as to why the stage is in the shape of an 'S' - S for Sammy?
If the band really do follow-up on their press launch promise to record new material and tour Europe, they're most certainly on-track to surpass their own huge reputation as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. The most important reason for this is the name of one man alone who carried the show tonight, as he's carried thousands of shows in the past and the reason we're all here, Mister David Lee Roth.
Ice Cream Man talk intro was touching and sincere. Panama was electric. Dance the night away was nostalgia gone haywire; real shivers down the spine time for me. They played for over 2 hours and, last but not least, the tracked keys on Jump were in tune AND Dave spun his stick thing and kicked his legs around like a man half his age!
If I had to sum it up in one word? Wolfgang!
What a great fucking show. Dave and Eddie were both on top of their game.
And that Wolfie can really play that bass. I was surprised.
The crowd here in Sacto was pretty mixed in ages, I got 4 numbers. What a great fucking night.
I can't wait to see them again.
