No, just mount it stock...
Don't destroy the guitar just because Edward wasn't smart enough to properly mount a pickup properly...
Agree. That is a nice pickup too by the way.
This space for rent.
properly mount a pickup properly

Fender Jaguars are horrible guitars......Originally posted by DLRdelight!

Keep the pickup and set fire to that piece of shit guitar.
No they're not...
Not bad guitars but good luck keeping that piece of shit tremolo in tune.

I'm debating with myself about direct-mounting a Custom-Custom in one of my guitars I'm doing a refurb on...
I know Eddie swears by it, but I haven't tried enough guitars with them installed that way to say it makes a difference to my ears.
I can see theoretically how it might improve resonance and bass response though... question is, is it a noticeable difference?
Think about it: Generally speaking, even if you do surface mount it, chances are you're going to have to use some sort of spacer for height adjustment underneath
(preferably wood, but I've heard legend of EVH jamming matchbooks under Frankie's...in which case, what's gonna transfer string vibration better: plastic or a wad of paper? )
I think even if I do direct mount it I'm going to put the mounting ring over it when it's done..most guitars look crappy without them IMO...
In my honest opinion the Custom Custom, while a good sounding pickup, is geared more for the "modern" EVH tone than his vintage ones. I think there is too much output going on there to capture the old tones. Now I've heard of people bastardizing Custom Customs with a Duncan '59, by taking one of the coils off the '59 and replacing it on the Custom Custom. Supposedly this is basically what the Duncan EVH pickup is. Mismatched coils and whatnot.
I think the original Frankie pickup is more around the PAF range.

Yeap!!!!
Yeap....The PAF's are very similar to EVH's sound.Originally posted by BrownSound1

well yeah anyways im probably going to attempt to do it myselft this weekend with some help. so hopefully all goes well
well anyways. is this a good pickup to go after the cvh tone??? or what do you guys use??
Try a Lollar P90!!!
I dunno, what BullShound1 said sounds correct to me...Originally posted by DLRdelight!

I can almost get an early Van Halen tone with Dimarzio HS3 stacked humbuckers. The only difference is my sound is a bit thinner with a ZZ Top sounding string buzz that I like a lot...
I have three guitars with different humbuckers and when I play Van Halen I use my gold Strat with HS3's, so...
The EVH sound IS a PAF! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the pickup in Frankie supposedly a PAF out of his Gibson ES-335?Originally posted by Eddie's Booze
Yeap....The PAF's are very similar to EVH's sound.
As a matter of fact, Chip Ellis said it still had a PAF sticker on it when they took it apart to do the replica in the GW article.
so like what should i do???
return the jb and go get a gibson classic 57??? or put the jb in the fender jag?
check out the gibson ones this is just one

Ed's early classic Brown Sound is a Strat with a low output vintage PAF Humbucker into a vintage Marshall cranked wide open sending a blend of pre-amp and power-amp distortion into a mixture of various vintage celestion speakers...
The rest is in his fingers...
Yngwie's approach to tone is similar...
The rest is also in his fingers...
Buy both, install them and get a good feel for each and pick the one you like...Originally posted by DLRdelight!

Return the one you don't like or resell it on ebay...
Thanks for confirming, and I agree. As my teacher used to say "80% of your tone is in your fingers" and it's true.Originally posted by ELVIS

Mine is in my head and I try to make my fingers do it...
Same difference ??
Pretty much.
A Dimarzio PAF Pro has the Eddie/Yngwie Sound....Originally posted by ELVIS

well the reason im putting a new pickup is because i need more high gain. the jag just starts to feedback when i put the gain i usually put it in. i was looking at the dimarzios and thinking if i should go return the jb and make a switch??
Unless the pickup that was in it already was just microphonic and squealng, a high output pickup added to an already high gain amp/effects set up is going to be more prone to feedback, not less...Originally posted by DLRdelight!

But in the right hands, it'll be the good kind of feedback...
As for the PAF Pro, I'm not a fan...I'd take a Duncan '59 over it any day...
The PAF Pro has a subtle aww vocal like sound to it like a wah pedal a bit cocked. Personally, if it were going in the bridge I'd just go with the Tone Zone which is like a PAF Pro on steroids (and is still responsive to dynamics) if you didn't dig the '59.
Not a fan of the Tone Zone either. I'm goin' with this puppy:
Though now BS-1 has me concerned it's going to be too gainy.. We'll see...
Isn't the custom custom a pretty bright pickup?
No, according to the Duncan info, it's for use in brighter sounding guitars, the high end is supposedly smoothed out.
They also recommend it for guitars with maple and Ebony fretboards, and the guitars I'm putting them in (assuming I like the 1st one) have one of each, ironically...
i guess ill just fucking try the jb in the jaguar and if not change it again later on. shit i just dont know lol how much does the duncan 59 run for???
i got the pickup on the labor day sale and got it for 52 as to 75-79 ish. i was going to get the gibson 57 paf i believe and i told the guy what i was looking for and he said you want to go with this one ( the jb duncan) stating that it is well rounded and can be used from blah to blah.
That's what I'd suggest, try the JB first, you may like it.Originally posted by DLRdelight!

You should be able to get a '59 for the same ballpark as the JB...
That's what I already said!
You gotta try both!
alright elvis calm down lol!Originally posted by ELVIS

Don't think that the Custom Custom will be gainy like a Duncan Distortion or a DiMarzio SD, but it does have a bit more output than a PAF type.
Of course after saying all of that I've heard a guy get a pretty damn good early Eddie tone using a Duncan JB.
Any given pickup sounds different guitar...
That pickup may be perfect, you gotta try it...
That combo sounds good to me...
If I were you though, i'd figure out a way to put a Kahler whammy on that jag...
The tone of a Kahler bridge will help you get more towards a warmer Van halen-esque sound in my opinion...and they work GRATE!
It would look cool too if it was done right...
Uhmm...what?Originally posted by ELVIS

If we were talking about any guitar other than a Jaguar, I'd be ridiculing you mercilessly for that remark... You know me...tremolo snob.

It actually would look cool on a Jag...
