The sound quality was pretty damn good from those early days. I hear he hadn’t incorporated his signature hand tapping into Eruption yet. Love those early pictures too. Thanks...

It's interesting how he didn't quite have the brown sound figured out, yet.
I wonder what he using here compared to the first album recording.

I've tried to explain many times that a big part of the "brown sound" was achieved through the expertise of Don Landee, Ted Templeman and the studio recording process, using vintage high-end recording equipment including a particularly famous brand or type tube console...

It's a big mistake that a lot of people make trying to get the first Van Halen sound out of a guitar amp...

The sound of this clip is probably a much better representation of Ed's early guitar sound than the studio version of Eruption...

The Reverb used on Eddie's guitar in the Studio gave him his "Sound" on Van Halen and Van Halen 2 + also this might sound strange but the guitar being panned to just the left speaker playd a big part of it as well.

    This is an interesting page...

    Different people discuss Ed's tone...

Sone of it seems accurate, some not so accurate, but I found it helpful as it filled in some gaps for me personally considering that I have been studying this topic on and off for years...

    Enjoy!

Remember, this is a 30 year old topic and the level of expertise can be quite high...

EXACTLY! I seen discussions all over the internet about how to get that VHI "brown sound". I've always believed that the "brown sound" we all grew to love and emulate, was a studio creation. Ed even stated that he didn't like his tone on VHI. He never really got that tone back again on any album IMHO.

Everything pre-VHI that I've heard seems to have so much more fire to it... you can tell Eddie was hungry for it.

Ya, Romo is lighting the NFL world on fire. I know, I just opened a can of worms. Sorry! Ed really was just jaw droppingly incredible back then. If he says he is at his best, then this tour should be amazing. We shall see.

I sure wish (the Defense didn’t look good) we had some quality video recordings (Jason Witten was unstoppable) from that era. I’ll probably go to a show, (TO didn’t drop not 1 ball) but I’d rather have Pro-Shot DVD’s (the defense worries me) from those early days and from the first 3 tours though. I hope no one noticed my subliminal messages to you TW.

That’s a cool drawing that you found. Was it in the garbage or did you find it laying in the street? Well you know what the saying is, finders keepers (losers weepers.)
