Changing a Nut

What's the best/easiest way to do this? I snapped my nut by the G-String & need to replace it. I guess yank the other one out, make sure the surface is level/has no glue or something on it & then stick the new one in with what?

Deffinately use the Stewart Mac advice. Cutting a propper nut can be a real bitch. Getting the right string height can be trickey! I tried replacing a nut when I was like 15 on a Mephis LP copy. I was using X-Acto hobby files to cut the notches and fucked the first two nuts trying to get it right. I just lucked out on the third and it worked.

I didn't even know what the truss rod did. I spun the nut completely off and then tightened it up but whatever I did I ended up with the sweetest action by accident. That guitar was a dream to play and would really sing and I have no idea what that nut thingy did. LOL!
