    Badlands - Dusk (1999, but recorded c.1992)

Ok, I think the first Badlands album is failry well known to hard-rock fans (self-titled, 1989 - if you don't own it, but it!): Jake E Lee shreds all over it, and Ray Gillan has the best voice you've never heard. Sadly, their second album "Vodoo highway" didn't keep the momentum going and sounded a little bloated and uninspired in places; too many softer, mid-paced songs, and too many James Taylor and Eagles influences. With the exception of "Last Time" and "Soul Stealer" (amazing riff) the energy was gone.

Ray Gillan died AIDS c.1993. "Dusk" was essentially the demos for a new album, recorded in 1992 and it is fuckin' incredible. Much more hard-rock than "Vodoo....". Ok, not all of the songs are great and given that this isn't the finished product there are plenty of kinks to be kicked out. But that's why I love it: it was clearly recorded "live in the studio" and you get the sense of a rock band playing in the room, the feel, the energy. It's raw and dirty, you hear when the drummer misses fills and symbol crashes, or when someone goes out of time. To me, these rare errors ADD to the overall impact of the record, it makes it more human. Ray Gillan's voice is also amazing on this one. Well worth a listen.
I have that in my car stereo right now! Kick ass cd!

A cd I dig that I'm the only one that knows about it: Slade "Keep Your Hands off my Power Supply". Great rock band, with great rock tunes. "Ready to Explode" rules. Fuck an A.

This is an immense hardcore record.

I actually quite enjoy the other LOA albums, but they never came close to this. That being said, did you hear their last album (the one that sounded a little bit like Velvet Revolver's first record)? I thought was awesome, possibly the best written songs they've ever done. Not the rage of old, but angst ridden heaviness nonetheless.

    Vain "No respect".

I was listening to it at work this morning.

    Great songs.

It was released two years too late (1989).

If they had released it in 86/87 when GnR, Poison and Faster Pussycat were breaking out, they would have been up there.

Oh man, I was thinkin' about posting that one too. For me whatreally makes that record is davy Vain's voice - it's such an unusual rock voice, almost effeminate in places, sort of soft but menacing and un-nerving too. "No Respect" and "Bite the Bullet" are about as good as sleaze rock gets. Just an awesome, awesome record. I'm going to have to play it tonight now!

I've been following the band for a long time. River Runs Red is my favorite album of theirs because it means a lot to me.

The first song I ever heard by LOA was "Underground" on WSOU, a college radio station. I was instantly captivated by the voice, the rhythm of the guitars and drums and the chorus, "they keep on kicking me down, kicking me down, try to get me underground, underground..." Everyday I felt as hopeless and downtrodden as the person in the tracks "Monday," "Thursday" and "Friday." "It's the words and music that keep me living, keep me breathing."
Yes, I was talking about "Broken Valley", couldn't remember the name.
I know what you mean about rhythm, that band is just relentless and intense and the effect is very similar to the Rollins Band, IMO...

Have you ever listened to Ketih's solo stuff. nothing like LOA but still well worth a spin

It certainly is mellow, but the lyrics are consitently strong. Some really interesting stuff in his back cat.

I remember their horn player, Eric I think, was going to do some jamming with an old band of mine back in 96(try and create some interesting music for fun), but that never came about. They still play in New Brunswick at the Court Tavern every now and then.

They were kind of a raw, sleaze metal. A little like Faster Pussycat. That was the original cover art. My copy has the girl wearing a tiny bikini bottom.

Matt Kramer - War & Peas

Matt Kramer - War & Peas

    http://www.mattkramer.net/Preview.html

Took a chance on this one after listening to a few of the samples and digging them a lot. I'm glad I did. There's nothing technically fancy about the songs, but it's good, solid, crunchy rock. And you can tell the guy put a great deal of himself into the songs, which is a nice change from the usual "I'm just here to make a quick buck" shills that seem to dominate the music scene today.

I've always felt closer to the albums I own that I love but no-one else knows about. Anyone else know what I mean?

Sure, there are Classic albums, albums that every rock fan SHOULD own, and they have their magic, their brilliance their pure genius.

But then there's the great albums from the bands that should have been huge but weren't. The bands you mention to friends only to be met with a blank and vacant stare which says "Who? What the fuck are you talking about?"

Anyone got any albums like that? Albums that are like old friends?
    yes, i've plenty.
sodom, bloodlust, warlord, evil incarnate, burnt offering, disgust, phobia,
white pigs(these guys do a really cool instrumental version of the munsters themesong),
straight to hell, kufu, rock goddess, hirax, phantasm....just to name a few good ones.

    Spastic Ink - Ink Complete

The guys from Dream Theater said this album really influenced them. I think Spastic Ink are the true pioneers of Math Rock. Since they’re from San Antonio I know the drummer and guitarist very well. This type of music is not for everybody.

They actually took the time to synchronize the music to the movie Bambi. Here’s a sample.
