It seem this dual spark method is also for the lower octane feuls that are still prevelant (especially the 1980's) to create more energy with less octane. Unleaded type of thing as opposed to leaded fuels.

It is interesting that one fires before TDC and the other after TDC .

That explainds the two large coils.
No TWO sparks BEFORE TDC and one after (5 ATDC) . With stroker pistons (short/high pin) it straight'ens the piston out so the down stroke doesn't drag the piston skirt cocked down the bore. Short pistons don't last long as they are unstable in the bore.....

    Cool Igo,

I get it.. the short piston cap length and large bore size, tends to make it ride down the cylinder cockeyed..probably due to the gap and play that is needed for the rings and what they do to protect the cylinder sleeve.

The dual spark and dual possition of the spark plug and the before and after ignition, correct the play in the piston cap.

Perhaps, the motor is well designed for long slow puts, but not throwing the meat to it on a drag strip?

I guess you could install and longer sleeved piston and that head configuration may be benefitial on a drag strip due to it's dual spark combustion efficiency..?

No need to answer these statements of mine I am just wondering outloud...lol.

    thanks.

I would just have to get the rod adjusted, to fit the skirt.

But, isn't that always the way it is ?

Between shitty materials in the 50s, and age both heads developed cracks. Glassbeading over the years reduces thins castings (already casted thin) to limits that weaken them further. I found a set of virgin 57 heads in Austria of all places, and they're coming back from the machine shop in a few weeks. The old heads are fixable, so they're going down the road as these are two-year only and factory (FLH only) ported so they are extremely rare....

When I am, confused (wrong word..lol) more like unable to diagnose a problem with one of my bikes, I get so steamed. (breakdowns)

But, just working on one to improve it or pulling maintenance, I love that.

What I am leading onto here is what a pleasure it would be to wrench on that Pan Head, Igo.

I would go buy shiny new tools out of respect for the bike..lol.

Looks like it was running a bit rich. Quite a bit of carbon on the pistons. Did you have a head gasket leak on the rear cylinder?

Nope, not at all. Let a old Harley idle for 30 seconds and it will blacken the piston tops.. That bike runs very clean, your looking a 20K

Harley VRod. The paint is translucent red. They scratch all the surfaces lightly, then spray the translucent paint over it. Fucking amazing paint job.

A lot of the hardcore Harley guys don't consider it a true Harley. It has a water cooled engine designed by Porsche.

I always heard air cooled engines run dirtier. Also that rear jug doesn't get as much cooling is the one in front that could be why it is dirtier. Plus the cooling is not going to be consistent. Yup. An cool old engine but they have their quirks. That's part of the appeal.

I had a Honda 50 at 13 have written about it here, but one of my friends had a Scat Cat ( mini bike frame) was what I think it was called looked like that 9 year olds mini bike you pictured.

He put the largest lawnmower motor on the frame he could find I think it was a Briggs and Stratton 1200 4 STROKER ...after he had the throttle all the way open and couldn't get any more out of it due to the govoner..? He would reach down and grab the switch that is the govoner,( what we called it) push it past where the throttle stop was and get another 10MPH out of that little thing..lol I bet he could do 50 mph.

I would get him off the line or in the diirt with my Honda but on the street he would just rocket away...good times.

I love the old street frames, like That Kowwie very nice PB.

Is that the 750 or 650..?

Are you going to break it down and clean it up I see some rust on the inside of the shocks ...give him a jar of Crome Cleaner Polish I use the liquid it has red rouge as a gift..lol.

Some 1600 grade steel wool wont hurt the chrome and may bring it back. Then hit it with the polish.

Sorry...lol. I like a project and that 750 looks like fun.

They are meant for riding, but I do make time every spring for a trip to the spray car wash then home to a detail. I change the oil and filter, and clean the carb filter, (sometimes I find some large leaves in there.) (If you have Fuel Injection there some electical sensors that can be messed up messing with the carb fitler.actually the fuel throttle body and sensors carburator like some cave man..lol)) Work some polish into the chrome and wax the paint. Amor All the rubber.

I stand back and try not to inject tonnes of water into the instrument cluster and such things.

I have never looked into paying someone to detail it and I am getting to the point where my time could be better spent.

    Napping.
