Only thing Loudness REALLY had going for them, in the end, was the Asian angle and the fact that some of their stuff was initially hard to get and had to be imported...nothing really spectacular...

Van Halen cover bands, and seeing players pull off Eddie's licks now, ain't no big deal. Agreed with Elvis that seeing someone playing EVH-style licks back in the mid 1980s was one thing, but after 20 + years of seeing and hearing everyone and their brother doing their version of Eruption in local clubs and music stores, well...not so amazing anymore.

Its a shame that this attitude has evolved.
(As its perceived as old and wanky)
Modern bands are shunning the lead breaks.
Perhaps lead virtuosity is now a dying craft.

Gotta disagree Terry, I think to this day that Akira Takasaki is still one of the most underrated guitarists.....

Agreed. Not for nothing was he known as "the Japanese Eddie Van Halen"....

And Max Norman was not known for producing bands with sub-par guitarists....

Naw, it'll make a comeback. Just like bellbottom jeans did/will.
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

Shit, I play a bit myself, and by the latter part of the 1980s, even I was getting tired with seemingly every other hard rock song I was hearing having a guitar solo that (to my ears) was little more than an excuse for having everything but the kitchen sink thrown in...and this is coming from someone who totally dug what EVH, Randy, Vivian Campbell and Yngwie Malmsteen were doing in the eraly to mid 1980s.

Far as Akira Takasaki goes, I'm not saying the guy stinks. It's clear he could play. But Loudness was just an average hard rock band with average to subpar hard rock tunes. Put it this way; I think Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey can all sing very well. But they all ended up singing some of the most banal, unimaginative live song lyrics within the context of some typical, uninspired top 40 style song patterns.

All that talent, and they're doing little to nothing worth listening to with it. Takasaki in Loudness was along those same lines for me.

I will agree it is a shame that the guitar solo as a staple feature of the rock song is a concept that seems to have vanished from what's happening today, but if said feature is gonna resurrect itself as little more than some jagoff going wheedly-wheedly-wee and showing me how fast he can play a bunch of scales for 30 seconds, perhaps it's better if that stays dead.

Pure 80's cheese, but nonetheless, a very good tune that you couldn't fit more melody in:

As for Akira's playing, he was a product of his time frame. The guy could probably play just about anything he wanted.

Well, Akira DID do the soundtrack for an anime called Geneshaft 'bout 3-4 years ago.

And, no, it ain't hair metal.

I really liked Thunder In The East. In my opinion it was a pretty raw hard hitting guitar album and Akira did some pretty cool stuff on that disk. I saw them open for Motley Crue in 85 and from a guitarist standpoint, Akira just whooped the snot out of Mick Mars. Yeah they were 80's cheese, but they were not as bad as Elvis is making them out to be.

Akira was a decent player (albeit another one of the endless slew of Malmsteen clones that the 80's generated), but Loudness was just a fucking shitty band, period...anyone ever hear that "Soldier of Fortune" bullshit? So fucking awful it was LITERALLY laughable...

I guess it was OK for it's time, but even back then, short of the guitar theatrics (which were a dime a dozen once Malmsteen taught everyone how to do it), there wasn't anything to write home about...

Of course...doing that doesn't take much more than 2 weeks of practice for new guitar players...
