I've always held that a spammer is one of those people (or bots) that joins a website to offer sales for various products or services, while a troll goes about stirring the pot. This usually takes the form of starting threads or opening dormant ones from as long as 8 years ago to express opinions contrary to the basic outline of the site. It is a "Look at me" sort of thing that proves the notion that attention (even in a negative form), is in short supply for some folks out there. By ignoring them you not only avoid providing them any credence, you also fail to empower them, which is their goal in the first place.

You're partially right though Chef, a 'bot is a Registration Robot that hooks up registrations on discussion boards with autogenerated messages.
Like, "Duncan Hills Coffee is the bestest one for me" in every post.
It's not totally automatic though, a spammer has to "key" the fields to the 'bot program such as:
First Name
Last Name
City
State
Age
.. and all that other field-required stuff

Sometimes we get 'em but they get banned after the first message.
You can usually tell by the username if it's an autogenerated 'bot with names like "3xcg4wu7" or "bobby234876" but you dont ban 'em right away because new users sometimes carry their old email names on with blogs or boards to help 'em remember their username.
Like LoungeMachine's first username "hairymaletop69" was based on his original 2002 email "hairymaletop69@aol.com" until he received much persecution and changed it. Even though it looked like a 'bot registry you could tell it was a real person after he posted a couple times.

It's not the sites' fault, usually they just hire an ad portal or advertising agency that specializes in webhits.
I've thought about adding a decipher-text script to the site as a speedbump against autogenerated username accounts like this because a bot would have to "read" that particular keyfield to register.
But the more scripts the slower the siteserver CPU.
What we could do however, is move the email field around one up or one down, in the registration page because bot scripts are only keyed to vbull default fields for autoreggin'
