I've always held that a spammer is one of those people (or bots) that joins a website to offer sales for various products or services, while a troll goes about stirring the pot. This usually takes the form of starting threads or opening dormant ones from as long as 8 years ago to express opinions contrary to the basic outline of the site. It is a "Look at me" sort of thing that proves the notion that attention (even in a negative form), is in short supply for some folks out there. By ignoring them you not only avoid providing them any credence, you also fail to empower them, which is their goal in the first place.Last edited by chefcraig; 02-11-2009, 02:15 PM.

You're partially right though Chef, a 'bot is a Registration Robot that hooks up registrations on discussion boards with autogenerated messages.
Like, "Duncan Hills Coffee is the bestest one for me" in every post.
It's not totally automatic though, a spammer has to "key" the fields to the 'bot program such as:
First Name
Last Name
City
State
Age
.. and all that other field-required stuff
