So can't a spammer be concerned with disruption too?

.. well I wouldn't say there's any hard and fast rule, no.

Likewise a spammer usually exhibits self-control, whereas a troll doesn't. He's in for maximum insult damage!

I'd say Jesterstar and Flappo clearly straddle the midpoint between spammer and troll.

You can't say they're either one or the other!

                BC!!
I think Captn Caplock however is for sure just spammer

I've always held that a spammer is one of those people (or bots) that joins a website to offer sales for various products or services, while a troll goes about stirring the pot. This usually takes the form of starting threads or opening dormant ones from as long as 8 years ago to express opinions contrary to the basic outline of the site. It is a "Look at me" sort of thing that proves the notion that attention (even in a negative form), is in short supply for some folks out there. By ignoring them you not only avoid providing them any credence, you also fail to empower them, which is their goal in the first place.

                              Craigs' talking about a Bot.

                              That's neither a troll, nor a spammer.

You're partially right though Chef, a 'bot is a Registration Robot that hooks up registrations on discussion boards with autogenerated messages.

Like, "Duncan Hills Coffee is the bestest one for me" in every post.

It's not totally automatic though, a spammer has to "key" the fields to the 'bot program such as:

                                First Name
                                Last Name
                                City
                                State
                                Age

.. and all that other field-required stuff
