    Metallica

Now this is the Metallica I remember! An underrated, and sometimes forgotten Metallica gem! Load & Re-Load make me puke, and make me swear like a sailor! While I can still listen to the "Black" CD...It just can't touch the early stuff.

    Everyone "Jump In The Fire"

    Oh yeah!

Master of Puppets was awesome too...

I reckon everything up to and including Black..
Alhough I wish they would remix Justice, the
production on that one sucks so bad I rarely
    listen to it..

    All downhill, Black onwards.

Best album they did post "Black" was
the double CD Garage days covers collection..

    everything else was horrible,

Everything up to and including the Black record was fantastic, although I do wish that they would remix and remaster "Justice..." to give it the beefy sound it deserves, the riffs on that record are immense.

I'm a fan of all eras of Metallica. Only a fool would claim that the post Black-album material was as strong as te early stuff, and I'm not saying that, but there was some enjoyable stuff on Load and Reload - they are good heavy rock records rather than great heavy metal ones. To me it would have been sadder if they'd tried to make "The Black Album 2" for the rest of there career, or just made the same thrash album over and over.

    Fair comment Binmeister,

I guess its a question of when does a band reach its
physical peak, one that it will never surpass again...
And once that peak has been reached, will the original
    fans settle for less ??

Load/Reload etc, pleased some fans who were happy
to take a "Rock" version of Metallica..

Some of us thought they could keep outdoing themselves,
I guess the harsh reality is they couldn't.

SAD BUT TRUE !! (Pun Intended)

But a snake near death can still deliver a deadly bite.
So who knows, I still hold hope for one more metal masterpiece.

(Perhaps with Mr Mustaine back in the fold ??)

There's no chance of Mustaine being involved, as he won't have anything to do with them these days. It would also require Hammett to leave, and that won't happen.

The new album will be their best in years (that doens't mean it will be a patch on the first four.) Hetfield is playing ALL of the rhythm tracks like the old days; Rubin has gotten them to re-vist their past; and their will be solos and a decent drum sound. It won't be "Puppets" but it might be halfway decent.

Live, they are still more than worth the price of a ticket. Saw 'em at Wembley last year and it was the best performance I've ever seen. Immense.

Thanks for the info Binnie !
Now Im looking forward to it

St Anger and (What the hell was the last one called, forgotten
    it already ?) were horrible..

Having said that, there was little flashes of hope in parts...

First 4 are all you need.

    First 3 are the best.

Justice needs a remix and remaster. Where's the bass? Oh it's not there becasue Cliff is dead. Yeah I get it, but come on......gimme a break...

I do hope the new one is good.

I think the Black album is overrated.....as far as songs go...the singles are the best on it.......and I do love the unforgiven....

    The covers album is alright....

Agreed, and the best cover by far that they did on the Garage Inc compilation was the Mercyful Fate medley. I'm not sure that they are even capable of making a decent sounding metal record these days, with Hetfield's voice being shot to hell and all? Hetfield sounded horrible on the new songs last year.

I agree with binnie the whole way here.

While the thrash version slept a rock version put out some outstanding stuff...in a rock format.

I have big hopes for the new Metallica but when I hear stuff like MachineHeads latest....I wonder how a heavy Metallica's return will sit amongst the latest metal releases.

Never got into Metalica prior to the black album.
A friend played Master of Puppets while I was
waiting for a sack at his house , but I thought
    it was too repetitive.
What about Queensryche , they were shit hot
about the same time as Metalica but they
    just faded .
    What happened?

    So what.
Poison was shit hot about the same time, too. They also faded away (thank God!)

The connection between the two, other than time frame, doesn't compute. 'Ryche was a completely different type of band than Metallica and always has been.

Is it no coincedence that the first 3 had Dave Mustaine
and Cliff Burton's influence all over em ??

Can you imagine how Mustaine must have felt hearing
all these riffs hitting the bigtime that he wrote !!

I always thought he deliberately recorded "Mechanix"
to tell the world who the real author of "The Four Horseman"
    was...

Burton influenced Lightning and Puppets. You can hear how different sounds Justice without him since he passed away. Justice lacks of harmony, too many riffs but its still my favourite album.

I don't think Mustaine had any influence over "Puppets", and his influence over the first two records isn't as large as he would like to think. Yeah, he gave 'em some killer riffs, but Hetfield's never been short of ideas in that department has he?

Burton, on the other hand was clearly a huge loss. Something tells me though that had he still been around, Metallica would have been even more experimental sounding than they were during the Load-era.

Binnie, as always (well 99% of the time)
I find myself agreeing with you...

The mustaine riffs were gone by MOP.
Only a few left on Ride the lightning..
The title track and Call of Ktulu...
The title track was fucken kick ass, no doubt..

Master of Puppets to me was the band's Sgt Peppers...
And no Mustaine in sight. But theres no denying he
shaped the sound that led to that Epic album...

Cant wait to swap notes on the new release with ya binnie !

The feeling is mutual, I just hope that they deliver the goods. I actually enjoyed St. Anger because I thought it was a bold move for a band of their size to actually release an under-produced garage record. The aggression on that record floored me. (I appreciate I'm in the minority as a fan of that.)

But this time, I hope they stop the experimenting and release a proper Metallica record.

Yeah, the intro which you never hear again in the song,
the refrain in the middle with one of the sweetest classic
melodic solo's and rhythm sections, and of course the
bone cracking variation they throw in when they chant
"MASTER MASTER, WHERES THE DREAMS THAT I'VE BEEN
    AFTER"
Then another solo, this time heavy, with the heavy
    rhythm backing..

Yeah, Master of Puppets is totally repetitive...

Dude... did you actually listen to it ??

Yeah, Master of Puppets is totally repetitive...

Dude... did you actually listen to it ??
It's been many years since I heard that tune.
I will give it another listen before I comment
    further .
Maybe I was already biased due to my friends
    anti Zeppelin comments.

How is this album forgotten? It's the one that started it all.

Not Ride the Lightning (fan-fucking-tastic) but still a classic bit o' metal!!!!
    Stay Frosty, muthas!

Cant wait to swap notes on the new release with ya binnie !
i'm gonna dis agre with you on the dave riffs running out by MOP.
i just think that james and lars quit giving him credit after RTL.
"Battery" sounds alot like dave's style of riffage.
    so does "blackened".

    No need to disagree.

Dave's influence carried way past Ride the Lightning.
But knowing his thoughts and relationship to Metallica,
you can bet your left nut he would have spoken out
directly if one of his riffs had been used, and not
    credited.

Then explain how they were in their most innovative phase while Cliff was alive. Their style didn't change till after he died. They became more mainstream. I think you've got it backward, Bin.

My thoughts exactly. I always thought Dave's influence was present on MoP even though he wasn't given any credit. Maybe running out of "Dave riffs" and Cliff's absence was the real reason their style changed so much after that album.

Its a complex piece of music, I know as we used to cover it..
When I say complex, its more involved than the usual

    verse - chorus x2
    lead break
    verse - chorus
    outro/finish..

Theres about four different songs going down in that tune ! lol...

I never felt it was repetitive playing it live, in fact it was a rush..
The mellow refrain in the middle gave you a chance to get your
breathe again... Awesome stuff, Metallica's forte ! That beautiful
classical sounding backing and melodic solos..
Then thrash again !! OOORRRIGGGHT !!!

Never got into Metalica before the "Black Album".
    It's probably an age thing.
I was into the 70s stuff , still am.
Zep , Deep Purple , Sabbath , Foghat , Cheap Trick, Van Halen.
Only a handful of bands after that GnR , the Crowes , Metalica
    Queensryche , even interested me.
Metal to me was Iron Maiden , Preist.
Yngwie? Never got into his music either.
Gary Hoey? That boy can play.
He was supposed to do something for a V H tribute album.
Never heard if it came out.

My musical expeirience consisted of mainly singing in
    church.
Or belting out my rendition of "Okie from Muskogee"
just to piss off my boss.
The only musical instrument I could master was the
    stereo.

So did the volume , everytime mom yelled "turn that shit down".

When my parents first moved to the desert the nearest thing
was a church about a half mile north of our house.
Everyone but me was gone so I cranked some Zeppelin.
In between songs I heard the phone ringing.
I answered , it was the church asking me to turn it down,
    I was interupting the services.
That was on the folks old console tv/stereo.
    Fucker had 20 inch speakers.
Tv hadn't worked for 18 years.
