The "still play =VH= albums on Vinyl" thread.

Bought a new Sony Turntable (yeah, they still make em) and the six pack sounds way better going 33 1/3 rpm at high volume, than some shitty CD going several hundred rpm.

And that's just with a turntable hooked up to a 50W PC speaker system w/subwoofer. Imagine hooking up an amplifier and some real floor speakers up to this SOB.

Yep. I recently found a sealed copy of 1984 on ebay to replace my tattered original. Sounds fantastic.

LPs are better than CDs - their sleeves have more space for the autographs.

    Great thread.

    I recently picked up

VHI from 78, not sealed for $10
VHII from 79, not sealed for $4
WACF from 80, sealed for $20
DD, from 82, sealed for $20
1984, my dad's copy, with his name written on the top right corner lol

I'm still looking for a sealed Fair Warning, all I've found on eBay are not sealed, that are going for $5.

The one's that arent sealed, play great.

    Also

I picked up Crazy from the Heat, not sealed for $2.75
EEAS, not sealed for $2.75 and
    Skyscraper, sealed for $15.

Never got the LP sound, but to each it's own. I like the CD remasters and the Gold ones.

Too bad that Sony sounds like crap...

Get a good used Technics table and install a good cartridge and that Sony will be on ebay...

Back in the late 90's I traded quite an expensive Tascam reel to reel tape recorder for a very well preserved collection of the Six Pack on original vinyl. The vinyl is scratch free and the albums contain the original posters that were never unfolded...

    To this day, I have never played Fair Warning or 1984. I've played V A N H A L E N II several times, just because it's my favorite and I couldn't resist...

    Cheers!

yeah...I actually miss the large sleeves with the artwork, and pics etc.

The visual experience of a new album was almost as cool as the audio.

Yeah, me too. It's not so much for sound quality purposes - my speakers and amp are probably too cheap to tell - but what I prefer about LPs is that you are more inclined to sit back (or jump around or whatever) and listen to the whole thing as it was meant to be listened to. You also get the packaging. Just compare the shot of Dave on the back of VH1 with the little tiny version of the pic on the CD - part of the magic of it all is stuff like that. The cover of VH1 particularly was a perfect counterpart to the sound on the record.

With CDs and MP3 it's too easy to skip through an album. When you listen to those VH albums beginning to end, you realise how awesome they are. Do LPs even exist anymore with MP3s? Kids just buy tracks, or download stuff without really getting the full-on experience.

Also, there's almost no flab with vinyl LPs. The optimum length of a vinyl LP was 30-40 mins max. VH albums always came in at about 33, 35 mins to preserve sonic quality at the mastering stage. If you listen to any of the Templeman/Landee Warners productions for other acts - I think of the first Montrose album, and the awesome 'Sailin' Shoes' by Little Feat - they are all just over 30 mins long.

Good point. I've got a Technics and it still plays great. WACF sounds fantastic
    on it as does 1984.

The stylus does come into play, but if its a good brand,
most turntables blow away any sliced (digital) audio CD
    reproduction.

Its the same deal as Tube amp versus Solid State.

Music by nature is an ever changing flowing analog
waveform, anything that processes it that way,
    will always sound better !

To slice and dice it at a rate to trick the human ear,
is still slicing and dicing it (digital)

    Music is not digital !

You know what, they should introduce high fidelity analog CD's..
You know it makes sense ! No sampling. Pure flowing sinewave peaks

i have 4 of the original six pack that i purchased, i picked up vh and diver down at a salvation army store and put them all in a frame and have them on the wall in the attic all purpose party room. its neat to look at. every time i look at it i want to turn the diver down album around so you can see them on stage bowing to the crowd. i have an old pioneer turntable that back in the day needed a new needle and cost too much to replace. i should look and see if i can pick 1 up somewhere and break those baby's out of their jailcell.

Out for dinner on New Year's Day - we tell my young friends that we first had that song on a 45. They did not know what that was - then said "Oh yeah, that's like those tapes in a box - or before them - and we laughed our asses off. Immediate lesson in vinyl, RPMs, LP and Stereo. Too damned funny - but after all - they were born in 1986.

CDs DVD and BlueRay discs are all zeros n' ones.. dots n dashes with limited space.. you would have to have many times the capacity of even a blueray disc to equate the information contained on just one 45 min LP.

I inherited my dad's McIntosh system with four 6' electrostatic speakers. I also inherited his HUGE vynle collection which had a lot of rat pack, jazz, blues, classical and big band. There's even Soviet era records that he picked up in Moscow in 1978.

I remember everyone complaining about the quality of the record pressing in the late 70's and early 80's. The records seemed to be thinner and were not completely flat. The records from the 1960's were better but you do get the dynamics of sound that digital cuts out.

Ha! I have a Made In Germany EIAC turntable that's built like a tank. It cost a fortune in the 1970's. You are right, the turntable does make a difference and this was one the picky audiofiles bought in the day.

I bought a old building that had a Werlitzer 2304 jukebox that I had restored and it's now in my basement. I also have an old Coke machine that you pull the bottles out. Both were in the building. It was a nice score.

Remember the old FW/WACF 2 and 1 cassette tape? ha! Just saw one the other day at a friends house. Those were cool.

They are a lot of fun. Kid's love them. I remember them from my childhood but kids today only know CD's and MP3's. They love to watch it automatically select the records and all the mechanical stuff going on. I now want a old late 60's pinball machine. I hate the digital numbers, I want one where they turn over and make all that wonderful noise.

I have inherited my parents (well my father's still alive) old Pioneer stereo with vinyl player. I recently had the connection plugs remade, so I can also plug my cuntputer, mp3- or a cd player into it. Fookin ace.

I have all six on vinyl, plus some singles. The teacher on Hot for Teacher single is HOT. Some of my best other stuff includes the Beatles single "Yesterday", Cream's "Crossroads", and some original Pink Floyd albums...
