Say goodbye, Dream another Dream, this dream is over.

You will never hear or see Ed like this again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc2qd71quO0 And yes it's with sammy, but it doesn't get any better.

It's over folks. The dream is over, but thankfully the legend lives. This messageboard is yesterdays news. Wolfie proved that.

    Sad, but true.

    Wow,
Not only do you quote a Hagar song in the title.. but you link us to a vid of Sammy and Ed.
Are you at the wrong place?

It's about ED, not Sammy....We all know Ed made VH what it is.

The vid is just an example of Ed at his best.

Looks like someone is gunning for a fight...............

Why come on a message board and tell us we're defunct?

I think we all realize that it'll never be 1982 again, but that doesn't mena they'll be no CVH......

Why, if it isn't TongueN'Ass. Never figured you for an Ed'tard Sheep peep though...

If anything, you could have played a video from the 1981 Fair Warning tour, or even from the 1984 tour, as anything Ed did on guitar with Sammy and Van Hagar paled in comparison and simply wasn't as good as his writing and playing with CVH. And a lot of posters at the Links who like Sam WILL actually agree with that.

So, what's your point? The last time spEd played well on a consistent, night-in night-out basis was supposedly on the VHIII Abortion & Letdown Tour® ten years ago...no one accused him of that the last go around with Sammy in 04, that's for sure!

Yeah, no one can talk about Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd on a messageboard now, because they're now "defunct."

What fucking sense does that make? I talk about WWII on a messageboard, and it's been over for 64 fucking years now!

Van Halen, in all its incarnations, is culturally relevant. So, if this mental midget wants to base everything on how well Eddie is currently playing, then have at it and fuck off already and stop posting on the internets about it.

I hear the Jonas Bros. are at their peak now, have at it TongueNAss!

Well, the song fit... and so does ED's playing.

This may be a DLR website, but truth is you wouldn't even know who DLR is without ED, so show some repsect.

And most of his best playing was between the years of 1976 and 1984, so we could have all fucking ended it when Dave left...

Maybe. But there's also a chance that most people wouldn't know who the Van Halens were without Dave's mojo and promoting. Without Dave, Ed was just another great guitar savant. Does the average person know who Jeff Beck or Joe Satriani is? They may have just been a maestro wannabe cult act if not for Dave. As it is, Ed is now ranked FUCKING 48th as a guitarist by Rolling Stone! Why do you think that is? Who should show some respect?

Do you even know who's idea it was to call themselves "Van Halen" was?

And I blame spEd for a lot of mistakes and for being a complete asshole in his dealings, especially around the 1996 MTV debacle. He could have rekindled things. He could have changed the band's name when Sam came aboard. There's a lot of things that could have been done...

Ed writes great songs, doesnt really matter who sings them. You have proven that yourself with all your Sammy bashing. Samy sucks ass, yet VH lives on. Explain that one....

Do you think I am a n00b when it comes to VH? Yah, they were called Mammoth when Gene Simmons discovered them, but nothing happened. Then DLR said VanHalen was better... alrighty then.

I've been around these boards for years man. I've heard enough ED hate to last me a life time. Is that a real question? The fact you call him spED is reason enough.

Haven't heard VHIII, have we? How many say you?

Will you be "Up For Breakfast?"

Maybe you can point to his extensive body of solo work (hint, you'll have to be standing in front of the shelf at studio 5150 to do it!)

You have proven that yourself with all your Sammy bashing. Samy sucks ass, yet VH lives on. Explain that one....
But, where exactly have I bashed Sam here (yet)?

Oh, I've bashed Sam plenty, but he's not the topic nor even the point here.

I didn't say he "sucks ass." I said that Ed's playing during Sam's tenure wasn't nearly as good as his playing with Dave was. It was more based on a rhythm guitar style and is apologized for by some as a style of keeping up the times during the 80s...

Do you think I am a n00b when it comes to VH? Yah, they were called Mammoth when Gene Simmons discovered them, but nothing happened. Then DLR said VanHalen was better... alrighty then.
No. I think you're agenda-trolling and giving Ed a bit too much credit...

But tell me how well VH has done without Dave at the helm. They did okay for Sam's tenure mind you, but they sold an ever decreasing number of albums. And VHIII sold for shit, barely going gold, for a band that had once sold over 12 million copies 1984...

And my point is that Van Halen making it as a major act without DLR is questionable....

Did Montrose make it with Sam? Was not Ronnie Montrose by all accounts a great player? Don't get me wrong. Ed would have made it in some form. But not to the extent he made his mark with Dave and CVH!

But he is spEd. He's a great player and I love his stuff, but he's still a shitty human being. Maybe that's not really true, but he's ruined the band and their legacy as much as anyone could...

He hasn't released any original material in over ten years now (except for an instrumental on a porn soundtrack) and has largely pissed his legacy to the point that Rollingstone doesn't even remember how much they sucked his cock in the 80s!

What is the thrust here? That Ed Van Halen has lost a step (or many)? Hell, who amongst us hasn't over the last twenty years? Look, by no means could anyone confuse me with being some sort of "Ed Apologist", yet why use the Hagar clip as an example? If it's about the cut-off point in the guy's playing, the 1998 tour would serve as a better barometer, where he still had his abilities together.

And along with that manner of thinking, why shouldn't people feel critical of the guy? I do not see the need to martyr his talents (or him, for that matter) when it was the guy himself that squandered them. Yeah, I get it: He created some wonderful music that holds up for those that appreciate it. Yet by the same token I fail to see the need to ponder what could have been at this point.

The fact is, the guy has a legacy, and it's a cryin' shame that he managed to shoot it in the foot. Yet by no means should I feel sorry for the guy for doing so, ya know?

The "thrust" of this thread is that ED is done. He's old, can't write any more, cant really play any more(The way he did), although I never count him totaly out, I think we can all agree on that.

So that being said, the Van Halen dream is over. I doubt there will be another VH album. Without ED there is no DLR. DLR hasn't done anything in 10 years either, not counting the Blue Grass cover tune thing.

Yet you appear to be attempting to have it both ways. On one hand, you are inviting people to "respect" the man's contributions. On the other, you claim him to be washed up, and rather than offering evidence of this, you offer a Hagar era video at a Roth site, then claim the site itself to be unwarranted at this point.

And if you feel the site to be obsolete, would this not make all of the posters here (including yourself) just as obsolete? If so, this would seemingly contradict your desire or need for people to "show him respect", as it is impossible for people's opinions to be simultaneously relevant yet not so.

Perhaps I'm being a bit thick here, yet the logic seems to hold water about as well as a cheese-grater.

You guy's kill me. I like the line that Ed played more rhythm style after Dave left the band to keep up with the style of the 80's !! Guitar was almost dead in the late 70's and early 80's until he set a new standard of playing. He didn't follow trends he set them !! Ed's playing on 5150 and Balance is just as good as anything on the 6 pack c.d.s I don't care if you don't like the song's or not !! It's not Van Halen, they should have changed the name !! but it's Eddie Van Halen. And I'm a big fan of his best playing and this is some of it. Ed is working at a guitar store early on without Dave's presence in the band, and rock would have been dead without them. Well it seemed to be headed for the grave anyway. And a video from 1981 would have been a better choice !! Eddie's best album as a player hand's down !! And I think the the last tour was pretty good for them even though we all mostly hated the fact Mike wasn't there, Ed had some trouble's but for the most part they were solid. I still watch my boot's and stuff on You Tube here & there and alot of it is great stuff !!

When Pioneer developed the remote-unit CD changer for the auto industry they could have stopped at a fair 5-disc cartridge, but they didn't.

Coincidence? I think not. But I fully disagree that Balance has anything to do with what we recall Van Halen to be based on: it's not a loud mix, the guitar's not very percussive nor dynamic; the vocals aren't belligerent nor Cause' Du Celebre.. Du Celerey.. or You Know WTF I'm saying? They're woman friendly lyrics sung by a permed man in Capri shorts better off fronting a cover for Women's Plus Sizes catalogues than an in-your-face pop metal band.

And Ed's playing chops may not have left their zenith by 1992, but the amplification sure did, and long before that too. It sounds nothing like Van Halen and resembles no CVH I recall listening to. You're fucking high on that one, dude.

I must say that the Dream is over is one of Halen's great moments. I'm not much into this idealism that 'CVH' can do no wrong. I only like one Hagar era album but there are things from the DLR era that I'm not in awe of. If this thread is about Eddie, then I'll say that that playing above while it might not be his greatest, is atleast one of them. But the riff in the song 5150 is some of his very best playing. Whether or not Eddie is a shitty human being there's nothing wrong in saying that.

Considering Ed's studio work ethic post Dave? I doubt anybody would know who Ed is, either. Fuck, since 1998 Ed's made Tom Scholz look like a speed demon by comparison.

I'll concede that 5150 and OU812 were fair enough entries considering the fluff that permeated rock radio in the late 80's - and by comparison to shit like Poison, Bon Jovi and Warrant, Van Hagar looked at least somewhat serious - but once 1991 rolled around and they decided to convince the world they could still "rock" without relying on keyboards, I think it was pretty apparent that A) the world had since moved on and B) Van Halen's song quality had declined considerably.

Van Halen, the band, was the name brand that sold Van Halen throughout the 80s. David may have been the voice and the face, sure, but it was a cohesive band effort and the NAME, the NAME, that sold them and the NAME that was talked about in the households. Not David this/Eddie that. At least, not in large part. When it's said that "Sammy Hagar got the keys to the kingdom in 1986 thanks to David Lee Roth and has been riding his coattails ever since", it's therefore pretty accurate. What, you think "I Can't Drive 55" was going to carry Hagar into the 90's (and beyond) had Van Halen never happened for him? Fuck no. To think otherwise is just stupid.

It was always a battle between Roth and Hagar among the fans, sure, but most of the fans just leaned "Van Halen" regardless due to the Ed/Al/Mike factor...plus, you consider that David was kinda all over the place post '91 himself and had no confidence back home at Warner Bros. (i.e. no promotion), and it just kinda fell that way. Could have just as easily went any other way. Just the side the coin fell on.

I'm amazed at your in depth knowledge of the band. I know n00bs, and you sir are no n00b.
