    "Stainless steel frets"

Curious about Eddie mentioning that in all of his recent interviews about the new Wolfgang....

What's the advantage of having stainless steel frets ?? I know he said they don't wear down, but I guess I'm just ignorant, if frets DO wear down, how does that affect either your playing and/or the sound ???

    Thumbs up

We were discussing the pros and cons of these things a couple of weeks ago here:

Ed's excited by ss frets because if the alloy is harder than the guitar string steel alloy, they shouldn't ever pit or develop divots beneath the string from excessive tapping.

However, he makes it sound as though the traditional German Nickel-Silver alloy used in American fretwire standard to the industry is inferior and now an obsolete item.

Yet, the softer metal is desirable for shapability and for ease of milling with a file and sanding block when maintenance leveling is needed.

One could argue "well you only need to mill the frets on a neck made of shitty wood that's always unsettling, or was unseasoned to 6-8% humidity before machining" yet in my experience, every neck will take a readjustment once or twice in the first year at least, and maybe a half dozen times in a decade from new. And among those times you might have the frets topped twice in a decade after it's left the factory setup bench which usually doesn't do a fret topping if its' "close enough."

Well if "close enough" was sufficient, there would be no business for that Plek machine doing computer-controlled setups.

Also, having seen some of Ed's guitars, he doesn't hammer the hell out of all his necks. That's a myth. Nickel-silver frets do ABSOLUTELY absolutely fine and will last several lifetimes as an instrument passes hands over and over.

Funny that Ed is concerned with a new type of fretwire, but not concerned with the variable shaping on his necks like they were made by Mexicans more interested in MoneyGram'ing next weeks pay to Xuachaca.

I'm gonna disagree with that as I have 2 guitars that are in need of a re-fret. A 95 EBMM EVH and a 2001 Wolfgang. The first 3 frets have huge divots in them. I'll be going with the SS when I can have it done.

Why not try having the frets topped? I would never suffer like that.

I had the frets polished and leveld.. and that just made the problem more obvious. I need a refret... just can't swing it at the moment.

My Gibson V is now over 20 years old. Gee whiz....it is 'vintage'????

I need to have the frets leveled a bit. I have not played a thousand gigs on them. So they are still in good shape.

Now the frets on my 1986 JB Player strat....that sumbitch needs a fret job.

Exactly. A good guitar player will not try to strangle his neck. You´ll only usually see deep crivices in frets if some punk has been hammering 3 chord songs on them all day or if the guitar´s 50 years old or if it´s a MiM Fender!

The only thing Eddie does hard is he really whacks the strings with his tapping technique. To get his sound you really have to whack the strings. His left hand technique never struck me as being very punishing to the guitar. Plus, Ed uses light guage strings and fairly low action to boot.

I'm surprised at so many people taking this one at face value.

This is just a bullshit marketing so that EVH can pretend his latest method for exploiting his fans can be sold as something new or innovative.

I know what you're saying Sesh, but for the record I was considering them before EVH said they were cool. They've been an (expensive) option on Warmoth necks for quite some time...and in this case he's just repeating the hype...supposedly they do last quite a bit longer.

I do my own fret work. I still use the old nickel wire because it's easy to work with. Stainless lasts longer but it's harder to work with and harder on your tools. Some people think stainless steel frets sound a tad brighter but I don't really notice a difference.

I think for people who tend to wear down frets sooner and don't do fret work themselves, stainless is a good option.

I hate the neck on the new Wolfgangs and frankly I didn't find the guitar any better than what Peavey was making and the Peavey ones were cheaper. Supposedly the Fender ones have a better Floyd Rose on them. The Peavey ones had Gota made Floyds and I've played mine a ton and never had a problem. Whoever did the wiring on my Wolfgang did a top notch job. Beautiful solder joints and all splices are neatly covered in heat shrink insulation.

To be honest. I think they really overhyped the new Wolfgang guitar. This whole bullshit of it took us two years. To do what? change the headstock a tad and put different binding on the thing, and some different knobs? Gee. Eddie doesn't know what he likes in a pickup now and they had to reinvent potentionometers for it? Yeah. The volume knob never seemed to work right the last 30 years Eddie has been using one. Good thing Fender finally got it right.

For what they are ripping people off for a EVH Wolfgang you could buy something with exotic wood and real mother of pearl inlays. It's a joke.

Nobody has any input on titanium ?
I know its not available, but as a scientific
Roth engineer, Im wondering how it would
shape up as fret wire ??

I've never had to get a guitar re-fretted, how common is it?

    Sesh, neither have I..

Elvis, lets assume that it could be moulded or
shaped. Doesnt titanium have much better
wearing properties than both nickel and
stainless steel ? Its lighter too, (not that
the frets will ever make a noticeable
    difference to the guitars weight)..

In fact does titanium wear at all ??
I know my left arm is practically titanium
and thats there for life.. So we are talking
constant wear and tear.. I know the military
use it for its "indestructable" properties

Fairly common, at least semi if not annually for touring musicians. People like EVH and SRV? Every few months...
But for what a professional refret costs you, you can pretty much get a new neck...
Pros will also charge you more to work with stainless steel frets...but they're supposedly worth it, and again heard that before the EVH marketing machine started up on it...

Oh, and I hate the Musicman and Peavey Wofgang necks...ewww.

BTW, I think SRV killed clapton... I know a lot of people say its the other way, but I've never watched Eric Clapton and got "The Chills" but most times I watch SRV I do....
I guess Stevie had to keep that deal he made at the crossroads !

I must be musically stupid or something because I've never been greatly impressed with Clapton in anything he's done.

To me the only notable things he's done is entertain middle of the road boring people and to find a way his kids tragic death death into a highly successful money making opportunity...

The only thing of Claptons that I ever liked
    was the riff from "Layla"
    (When I was 15)
I've heard him called "Old Slow Hand"
    fuck ???
Dave Gilmour from Floyd can make 3 notes sound like
the second coming compared to Clapton..

Jimmy Page at his drunken worst was still better
than Clapton at his best !!!

I agree compared to other greats Clapton is a pretty mediocre guitar player. Decent song writer and good rhythm player but not a shredder or all that notable of a player.

SRV on the other had an energy and vibe to his playing that few can touch.

Definately killed Clapton even just wanking around testing a couple of old Fender amps at Ray Henning's Heart of Texas Music. I was shopping there once and heard the most amazing noice coming from the back of the store. Walked over and there he was just wailing away at full volume... it was as close to a religious experience I've ever had.

Clapton had a few shining moments of brilliance when he was with Cream, and has more or less lived of off of them ever since. I still find this to be inspiring, yet I think it has more to do with the ferocity of the entire band, rather than E.C.'s part.
