Anyone know anything about in-ear monitors?

I'm thinking about investing in a set of in-ear monitors. I know nothing about them. The guys in the band have talked about it forever. If I'm going to take the plunge I want to know as much about cost vs. options/pros vs. cons as possible. Do any of you guys use in-ears or know anything about them?

They have also talked about striking amps, using in-ears and direct units. I'm a guitarist turned bass player for the gigs and the $$$. I love the sound and feel of amps. Especially the bump of big bass amps. I usually play loud just for the bump. If anyone has any ideas about a good/great bass direct unit that would sound like my Ampeg 8 x 10 I'd appreciate the suggestions.

I should like to announce that I was told that I have been "deleted as a contact" .....
Gee, do you think it was my questioning of :
"How is it that you are my KNOWN 2 year mate that barely was able to type and now, you run a multi-national 3-d web site, but have not been able to manage to get a cam going because of my fire wall, but no one (like myself) has had issues camming to either computer???

    5 known more to go!

Before you make the investment... here's something to try. Get a decent set of full ear coverage headphones and then set up a monitor feed to them and use that exclusively at a couple of full band practices.

This should tell you if you can handle just getting parts of the mix with all external ambiant sound blocked or extremely muffled. That's the key...

If you are playing small clubs without your full drum kit mic'ed odds are ear monitors aren't going to work very well for you. especially as a bass player and needing to key timing with the drummer.
