Dickinson first, absolutely. Not that I dislike Paul, really, but he only had two albums with Maiden and the debut wasn't really that great, in my mind. Paul did seem to have a bit of the "street cred", for lack of a better explanation, that really made Maiden seem...I don't know...edgier back in the early '80's during his run, but musically Maiden came into it's own with Bruce, no doubt.
Blaze Bayley's a great guy, good performer, decent singer, and excellent songwriter. Also he was completely the wrong choice for Iron Maiden, and he wasn't really used effectively. The real problem was that Maiden wasn't in a place where what they were writing really reflected what Blaze was about musically, coming out of Wolfsbane and judging by what he's done with his solo band since then. Bottom line = Blaze and Maiden just didn't mesh. Steve was going one way, Janick and Dave were following his lead, and Blaze, being the noob, probably didn't have much say in the matter, short of what limited input he got. Blaze's solo albums (Silicon Messiah, 10th Dimension, Blood & Belief) much more accurately reflect what he's about musically and they kick a LOT of ass. Far better than anything he did while he was with Maiden. In regards to his Maiden albums, though, X Factor and Virtual XI weren't bad listens, per se...no Maiden album is...I prefer Virtual XI over X Factor with the exception of that Angel & The Gambler thing...that was painful.

Dickinson IS Maiden... period.
I love the Paul period though.
With Dickinson they became what they are...Bruce's voice defines them.
With Di'anno I think they would of just faded away....kinda like they did with Blaze.

It was a totally different band with Di'Anno.
Yes it was...a good band mind you.
I just do not think they would of lasted this long though.
True, his vocals aren't as strong.Originally posted by WACF

However, the song "Prowler" is some of the catchiest shit I've ever listened to.
Yeah, Prowler is bad ass.
Seems when a band is young the first few releases have a certain energy or sound to them...something raw.
I`m voting for Bruce although his voice was only truely exceptional for the first three albums he made with Maiden ("The Number Of The beast", "Peice Of Mind" and "Powerslave").
After that he sounded like he lost a bit of interest ("Somewhere In Time", "Seventh Son...") and later occasionally sounded like he had forgotten how to sing ("Holy Smoke", "Run Silent Run Deep", "Hooks In You", "Be Quick Or Be Dead", "Weekend Warrior" etc), although it has been said that "The World Slavery Tour" shot his voice to bits.
He did sing well on his solo albums, though.
Since he came back in 1999 he has got back a bit of the old form and has never sounded better live (compare "Death On The Road" to "Live After Death" if you don`t believe me).
Dianno was good but he could never have fronted an internationally famous band.

Hell yeah they do! Those of you who haven't checked Blaze (the band) out really should. Just don't go in expecting what you heard with Maiden. Whether you liked him with them or not, I doubt you'll be disappointed.Originally posted by Revan Blaze's solo albums (Silicon Messiah, 10th Dimension, Blood & Belief) much more accurately reflect what he's about musically and they kick a LOT of ass.
BTW, great post, Revan!

No doubt. Just look at Def Leppards early stuff. Very different & very kick ass. Joe Elliott was asked why they don't play that stuff live anymore. He compared the early songs to the fuel tanks on the space shuttle. Once they help you take off, they fall off and drop into the sea while the shuttle continues up. He also said a low percentage of fans would even know those songs.Originally posted by WACF

Have to go with Dickinson here.
Di'Anno did well enough with the band, and there was a toughness and simplicity in the material back then that appeals to me, which kinda faded a bit after Dickinson's debut with the band, Number of The Beast.
But Dickinson was the singer on the two albums that I consider Maiden's best, Piece Of Mind and Powerslave...plus, I don't think Di'Anno would have really been quite up to the task of doing the music on those two albums justice. Same with Clive Burr and the drumming; you could tell by the time Number of The Beast came out that Burr was holding them back a bit, and the addition of Nico was what it took to give them that extra push. Same with Dickinson; I wouldn't say he was a QUANTUM leap from Di'Anno, but like Nico he had that little bit extra that allowed Maiden to realize the capability of the material Harris and Smith were coming up with.

I caught them 3 years ago.
The set list at that time was mostly older stuff...they only played 2 songs from their last cd.
They played the older stuff - pre Hysteria - and the place went nuts.
They played the Hysteria stuff and the place was still going strong.
They played the newer stuff and the energy just dropped from the crowd.
The band has to see that.
Yeah...that is the thing with Maiden.Originally posted by Terry

The individual members seem to bring certain elements to the band that stand out.
Steve's bass playing or Nicko's drumming...the guitars playing back and forth with precission...they compliment each other quite well with their playing.
I like Bruce's solo work quite abit but when you put Maiden together you get a very complete unique sound.

Both were great singers, but I have to go with Dickenson he has a lager range and can hit a really high note.

Blaze sucked donkey dick. He has no range, couldn't sing in a high enough register to sing the old Maiden stuff live, and his albums with the band sucked monkey shit. X- Factor was a 0 out of 10 rating, and Vitual XI was a minus 5 out of ten.
I think that pretty much sums up fucking Blaze Bayley. At a Maiden show, no one is looking to hear "2am", right?
And, while DiAnno made a couple of good albums with the band, Dickenson raised the bar to a whole new level. Maiden never would have reached the level they did without Bruce.
I've never listened to the Blaze Bailey Iron Maiden stuff. To be honest I wasn't a fan of Maiden after Number of the Beast.
To me though he got a rough deal. Kind of like Cherone in VH it just wasn't going to work.
I was kind of a contemporary of him when he was in Wolvesbane and met them a couple of times. They were a great bunch of guys and really deserved to make it. The demo tape that got them signed actually sounded quite like CVH with flashy blistering guitar. There was a song on it called Dance Dirty which was brilliant, very VHII sound but with kind of a Vai guitar solo. It somehow landed on the desk of Rick Rubin at Def Jam after their roadie gave it to a signed bands roadie. At the time the band were pooling their welfare checks into a fund for food and rehearsal time and couldn't believe their luck. When they got the call they told him to fuck off becasue they thought it was a wind up until he convinced them by getting them to call him back in LA.
Rubin produced their debut album himself which just completely sucked. He fucked it up completely no bass, no energy chose their worst songs. It was a total disaster. I talked to them around that time and if you mentioned the album they would just say 'I don't want to talk about it.'
It was a fucking shame, they were stitched up.
After that they really seemed to lose their way. I found an EP they had done after that in a bargain bin around 1990 which was ok but still nothing compared to their early pre signed stuff. I think they were badly advised or pushed in the wrong direction.
Blaze had a great line of funny chat onstage. He's just about the only frontman I've seen apart from Roth that used to get huge laughs from his chat between songs.
I'll need to look out their original demo if I still have it. they produced it themselves and it was great. I used to listen to it a lot. In the pics they looked like LA Guns or something.
I thought BB's singing was fine but his voice and personality was never going to work for Maiden. Be fair to the guy though he was offered the gig and it was a job.
Cheers!

Dickinson, by a mile.
For me, a distinctive singer is the best asset any band has, it's what makes them stand out.
Di'ano was ok, and Iron Maiden and Killers are classics, but his voice is only average to these ears....

Wolfsbane should've made it. They were really impressive. Rick Rubin fucked them pretty bad. I'm guessing they were a tax write-off for him.Originally posted by Seshmeister

Maiden offered Blaze the gig way before he actually took it. He was so devoted to Wolfsbane. When he finally realized they were going nowhere, he auditioned for it although it wasn't necessary. 'Arry really believed in him and pushed hard for him to be the new singer.
As much as I love him in Maiden, I really feel like they did him a disserevice. He had such tremendous shoes to fill. That task was made even more impossible by the fact that he was out of his element. Maiden wasn't exactly the kind of band that warranted the onstage antics Blaze was used to. He was a hell of a frontman with Wolfsbane. They were all about rock & roll excess while Maiden were very serious. They should have considered that when they offered him the job.
This isn't the best reflection of them, but they only have two videos. Still, it's a great tune that could've benefitted from better production.

There was some speculation on Blaze's forum as to whether or not that was true. Someone who actually knows him says it's not.
However, he did take nearly the entire year off. Plus a lot of his personal stuff was on Ebay a couple of months back. He's planning a pretty lavish wedding in February. Got to get the cash somewhere.
Blaze always seemed like a decent guy, but it just didn't work with Maiden, to these ears at least.
Great if some people dig it, but it's not for me...

and Dickinson sounds more like dick.....so I better give my vote to a dick than an annus
