I'm not saying it's OK, just that it ain't Tommy's fault. You, me, and anybody else here would step into those space boots given the chance. That's gotta be one hell of a paycheck, and the other perks have gotta be out of this world.

Also, I feel the same way as Indeedido about KISS. I grew up on it, LOVED IT, and am bored with everything they've done since the early 80s with very few exceptions. I listened to Sonic Boom... 'eh, it's not too bad. A far sight better than Crazy Nights or Music From The Elder, but nothing I'm in love with.

Maybe Thayer just got tired of waiting for the much-heralded and anticipated Black N' Blue reunion to take place and needed some cash to tide him over...

The ultimate choice resided with Stanley and Simmons. Thayer is just a witting participant.

Thought Peter Criss summed it up best when he said something along the lines of "one tour, Tommy is the guy who took my dinner order and brought me my plate of spaghetti after the gig. Next tour, he's dressed up in the Spaceman outfit playing Ace's licks, and I'm wondering what the hell is going on here?"

It all really comes down to this- honesty. Gene constantly wants to say how much he loves Ace and Peter, but they were always high or drunk. How about he just says, "Ace didn't want to be a bit player in the band anymore, because he had music to make on his own, and that Peter had pretty much lost it as a drummer, as evidenced by his work on the original reunion tour, and wanted more money, so we went and got these others guys to play with and we're going to give them new makeup or no makeup at all."?

That I could have accepted. But when Paul keeps giving interviews where he says that if he left the band he'd expect someone to be the Starchild, or Gene keeps trotting out the "Tommy's been around the band 20 years" stuff...I see no honesty. They still managed to put out a good album, though.

There IS a fundamental amount of dishonesty going on with Stanley and Simmons and the current incarnation of KISS these days.

The bottom-line reason Frehley and Criss aren't there is that by 2002 Stanley and Simmons got tired of listening to both of them gripe about why the reunion tour proceeds hadn't yet (after a half decade plus of reformation) become a four-way equal split. S & S realized that as long as the makeup stayed on and the show stayed the same, most people wouldn't give two shits WHO was in the band.

For Simmons to assert that Thayer somehow payed any real dues to now be impostering as Ace Frehley is bullshit, as is Stanley claiming that he would expect someone else to go onstage in his getup if he left the band (unless that includes Stanley still getting paid what he is now, I wouldn't bet on it).

I thought that was ok because it was billed as a tribute band and he did an ok job. But this sham that they are doing now is wrong. Any real KISS fan should be able to see it for what it is, SCAB! Take off the makeup and move on. Stop drinking the kool-aid, sonic boom is a piece of shit!

    Man, that`s crazy.

You talk about Kiss like they would save the world or something.

They never wrote a song that ever "meant" jack shit and we all loved them for it.

Anytime they tried, like "The Elder" or "Psycho Circus", it was below par.

So "Sonic Boom" is a bunch of cornball rock songs?

    Who cares?

If it sounds like Kiss, it is Kiss.

No matter if it`s Tommy Thayer, Bob Kulick, Dick Wagner, Rick Derringer or Robbin Ford to name a few playing the lead licks.

It sounds like KISS alright, shitty early 90s late 80s KISS. I got no problem with another guitar player but this album sounds like those shitty late 80s/early 90s albums. If you like those cool, you like this album. I do not like those or this. Rick Derringer did a great job on those Alive II tracks.

Well, it`s better than them doing nothing other than living in the past.

Having critisized them for that for a long time then I ve got to love it.

Heh...they are going to be in Gnashville soon.

Just as with the tour last year or the year before where they toured with Aerosmith, I have no desire to see them.

Last time I saw them was twice on the Reunion tour in 1996.

That plus the DVDs I have of the original lineup means I can derive all the satisfaction I need from watching them, as well as the memories of the 3 times I saw the original band live in concert.

Not interested in seeing a Fake Ace and Fake Peter.

Here is some good clean fun for everyone. Put on Sonic Boom, and play the first few seconds of Yes I know, then play the first few seconds of Say Yeah. Tell me what happens.

    Questions:

How does the new CD differ from any of the other ones?
Did they still think that this is 1986?
Is Gene playing Bass at all?

    Interesting. I checked ticket prices.

From the extreme ($995 meet and greet packages) to the expensive premium ticket packages ($225) they actually also have $17 nosebleed seats.

Pretty cool they offer such cheap tickets along with the out-of-control tickets.

No fucking way am I going to pay a thousand fucking dollars just to be in the presence of a pompous ass like Gene Simmons. I am sure there are fans who would, but I am not one of them.

I was a fan in 1977. But at that age we stopped going to see the circus.
Plus we realized that there is no such job as being a cowboy.

This band is the longest running gimmick of all time in music.

Same here. They finally put out the dvd's. Suits me fine.
I've only ever doled out $ to see the original KI$$ in makeup, once back in the late 70's and a few times during the reunion era. Other than that I don't have much time for 'em...

Original KISS drummer celebrates surviving breast cancer - CNN.com

Original KISS drummer celebrates surviving breast cancerStory

    By Madison Park
    CNN

(CNN) -- A year after beating breast cancer, Peter Criss, a founding member of the rock band KISS, calls himself "the luckiest man in the planet."

Peter Criss, now 63, said getting medical treatment early at the first sign of trouble saved his life.

While some men feel embarrassed because of "this macho crap," Criss said surviving breast cancer -- yes, men get it, too -- was actually a blessing. He was treated before the tumor could spread and said he's speaking about male breast cancer now -- during National Breast Cancer Awareness month -- to raise the profile of this rare disease.

Criss, who played drums for KISS and was known as "Catman," offered this advice to men who spot lumps in their breast: "Don't sit around playing Mr. Tough Guy. Don't say 'It's going to go away.' It might not and you might not see life anymore and how beautiful that is."

The 63-year-old musician is now cancer free.

Like many others, Criss wasn't aware men could get breast cancer.

"Even though we don't think of men as having breasts, they have breast tissue and are susceptible to getting breast cancer," said Dr. Sharon Giordano, an associate professor of medicine in the department of breast medical oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She is not involved in Criss' care.

"All men have some residual degree of breast tissue behind the nipples. It may be very small, but just like any part of the body can get cancer, that part of the body can get cancer," she said.

Male cases are rarer than female breast cancer, making up less than 1 percent of total cases.

According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2009 an estimated 192,370 women in the United States are expected to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer and about 40,170 are expected to die of the disease. Among men, there will be an estimated 1,910 new cases and 440 deaths.

"So many people must die from this," Criss said. "Somebody has to step up to the plate and say something to get them aware of how dangerous this is. Lots of men die: They wait, they don't go in, they put it off."

Criss joins a small group of men who have spoken publicly about having breast cancer. Several years ago, Richard Roundtree, the actor who played the title role in the 1970s "Shaft" films, revealed he had breast cancer.

Experts say men tend to get a diagnosis at a later stage than women, because they don't believe they can get breast cancer, and don't get routine mammograms or breast exams.

Breast cancer is "actually easier to find in men for obvious reasons. They develop an asymmetrical lump in their breast," said Dr. Stanley Waintraub, co-chief of The John Theurer Cancer Center's division of breast oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Men may ignore symptoms, such as lumps, pain in the breast or discharge from the nipples.

"A man has to know, if he has enlarged breasts, a lump, a discharge, just because he's a man, he is not immune to breast cancer," Waintraub said.

When Criss spotted a painful lump in his left breast after a workout in 2007, he didn't wait.

"I go to the gym; I've been drumming since I was a kid. So I'm very aware of my body," he said. "So when this happened I said, 'Jesus, what's this thing?' "

After consulting with his wife, who was battling a different type of cancer at the time, he sought medical attention. Criss had surgery in February 2008 to remove what the doctors thought was a harmless nodule. Later, he learned the nodule was actually breast cancer.

"I flipped out. I just couldn't believe it. It's a nightmare," he recalled. "I was angry at everything. I couldn't believe I had this. I was a really angry guy for a long time."

Doctors removed the cancer in a March 2008 surgery. Because the cancer had been caught early, Criss did not need breast reconstruction or chemotherapy.

The operation left no scars, so his doctor joked that Criss could still take his shirt off to play the drums. Criss responded with a laugh, "I'm in my 60s. Those days are over."

Criss sang lead vocal and co-wrote one of KISS' most famous songs, "Beth." He left the band in 1980. He rejoined the band for a reunion tour in the mid-1990s and stayed on, eventually leaving again in 2004.

He still plays the drums, and has started working on a record and an autobiography.

For men, "because of the lack of awareness, it can be stigmatizing to feel like they have a female disease when they're a man," Giordano said.

In the sea of pink ribbons, men who have breast cancer may feel isolated. To build a network among them, the John W. Nick Foundation started connecting male breast cancer survivors in 1996.

"They talk with one another," said the founder, Nancy Nick, whose father died of the disease. "It's the greatest thing for healing. They learn they're not alone. Second, they learn about protocol and treatment. They can compare their treatments and the care their doctor is giving them."

Criss credits his wife and his Catholic faith for pulling him through the difficult times.

Every year, he gets a mammogram; he had his checkup two weeks ago. "I left smiling like a Cheshire cat. Now, I'm coming around, I'm just so grateful," he said.

The causes of breast cancer remain unknown. But like women, men's risk of breast cancer increases if they inherit BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations.

Criss said he learned that breast cancer ran in his family, so he called his sisters, nieces, daughter and even his brother about possible risks.

"It's just important -- just go get checked out," said Criss. "It's not like you're going to lose your manhood."

Well....I think it's official, and Ace destroyed KISS. I'm sure that the final totals will show KISS to have sold a lot more albums, but here in my land of Canada, we have the Soundscan charts and KISS' album, debuted high and then disappeared. Even off the top 50 Hard Rock chart, Sonic Boom is already GONE. But Ace is still on the HR chart, albeit low.

Sonic Boom may have sold the usual initial amount from die hards, but died a quick death.

I believe he AND Peter. I think Pete doesn't wear a wig but certainly dyes his hair black.

Stanley and Chaim wear wigs in concert of course.

According to the book KISS: Behind the Mask (which was published with the "band's" consent), it was Derringer who did play guitar on the Alive II studio tracks. This is also verified in the book Rory Gallagher, Steve Marriott, Rick Derringer And Robin Trower, by Dan Muise. The thing is, who indeed played what on some KISS albums tends to lead into a very gray area. For instance, Simmons would more often than not fork over his bass if another player had a better idea, and Peter Criss was removed from the drums altogether for the recording of Dynasty. Trying to name which player did what on a KISS record is a difficult task, mainly because when it came to recording, this was a band that existed only in theory. Believe it or not, a bizarre form of quality control was in place, with the song being far more important than who actually played on it. This does sound laughable when given the results, yet it was the standard operating procedure at the time. And considering the lead guitar parts on the current Sonic Boom album are little more than "samples" from Ace Frehley's work in the past, very little has changed.

Maybe I'm making some confusion....but I'm sure Rick did played on "Exciter"...I read this book a few years ago already...I need to check this info again!

I remember I read in the book that no one really knows who actually played what on KISS records!! A thousand ghost players, probably!!

    That`s right.

Appartently Vinnie`s solo was too technical so they replaced it.

He wasn't happy about it, either.

Actually this makes perfect sense, when you remember that Kiss' management, and the guys at Casablanca Records actually started out in the bubblegum music industry of the late 60's/early 70's. It was entirely a common practice in the bubblegum world for bands not to play on their own records, in some extreme cases, nobody in the "band" would be on the record, and the band would go on tour and be expected to play songs from "their" album that they had nothing to do with.

That hasn`t happened YET, although some songs come pretty close.

    Don`t rule it out, though.

Was kind of a mild letdown when this info started slowly leaking out (seemed to notice it started in the early to mid 1990s). A bit lame to say, I suppose, but I was one of those chumps who thought (or wanted to believe) back in the day that Kiss Alive (for example) WAS, in fact, mostly live. To find that out about Kiss Alive 2 re: the "live" sides wouldn't be such a shock, since all of that sounded a bit TOO slick and perfect at times. It eventually came out that Peter didn't play at all on Unmasked (Anton Fig cut most of the album) and he only played on Dirty Living on Dynasty (with Anton Fig doing most of that album, too). Ace did the bass on Rocket Ride, and played bass on several other tracks. Seems like most of this kind of stuff happened from Alive through to Unmasked. Kinda what chef said, about the result transcending the particulars.

It`s not like Kiss are the first band to do this.

The Beatles had many songs that didn`t have the whole band on them, or things like Paul playing lead guitar instead of George and Jimi Hendrix overdubbed bass parts where he wasn`t happy with what was played by whoever was playing bass.

I don`t have a problem with the Alive albums either, as anyone who has bootlegs or the "Kissology" DVDs will know that they did actually sound that good live anyway.
