It seems to me that the story that I heard on some show about the Alive album (possibly Classic Albums?) is that the overdubs weren't as wholescale as the legend now suggests. The dubs also weren't because KISS couldn't play the songs well live, but that no one had tried to record a band like KISS live before. The pyro was being picked up by the mics, Paul didn't get close enough to the mic a lot of times and his vocals would fade in and out. Gene would bang the mic stand with his bass and it would make a thump. Etc.

If you've seen KISS on the Midnight Special from 1975 or so, playing live, you hear that they actually could play the songs well, and they sound very much like the Alive album, just a little more raw. If you have the KISSology DVDs, the entire performance in on there, and they are clearly a band that is hungry and playing their asses off, knowing they have a national audience.

Every live album has to punch in the holes. If Alive! was all fake, then they should have faked all their albums because it sounds awesome

How much I detest Zeppelin, I always found their trivia/history to be somewhat interesting. The whole mythology of 'Blackdog' and Page's diabolism that the title was a reference to some hound of hell ("eyes that shine, burning red") all seems to carry some sort of a Satanic resonance, while others thought it was a evil woman driving Plant mad. In fact, Plant later on said the eyes burning part was himself and that the song demonizes not a woman's sexual power but the male's own lust experienced as a possession from within.

Okay, so maybe not all that interesting.

    Uh Oh...

Looks like Paul is making Gene look a bit foolish...

As reported by Thestar.com, singer PAUL STANLEY was a little more understanding than his band-mate.

"You may hear a slightly different story from Gene, but so be it," he told the Star from Los Angeles.

"The media was carrying the dissent and upset feeling of the fans. They weren't creating anything, they were reporting it. Don't blame the messenger."

Stanley said a "comedy of errors" led to Oshawa being left off the tour when an incomplete schedule was announced.

"The size of the production turned out to require a larger venue," KISS spokesman Erik Stein told the Star on Monday. "In this case, that turned out to be the Air Canada Centre."

This, according to the band, was not really the case.

Stanley said Oshawa was actually going to be on next leg of the tour, which hadn't been announced yet. The outcry from Oshawa's KISS fans compelled the band to make a change and play there sooner.

"October 7 was not originally deemed the day we were playing Oshawa," Stanley said. But "to sooth everybody's hurt feelings and concerns" KISS decided to launch their new album in the KISS-loving city.

"The fans were understandably upset, but no harm meant, and certainly no slight," Stanley said. "It was clearly announced that Oshawa was the number one city, so it would be insanity to not play it."

Much better answer than Gene's. Gene is such a fucking tool. Paul and Ace still speak regularly. No one talks to Gene.

    Of course we did.

But at least back then the band was honest with themselves and not some glorified half-tribute band.

Thing is I actually like the fact that KISS is releasing a whole new album of tunes. It somewhat "legitimizes" this lineup rather than being a greatest hits tribute act for the past five to six years.

Vinnie Vincent was VV; Mark St. John was Mark St. John; Bruce Kulick was Bruce Kulick.

They all didn't pretend to be someone else -- like what Thayer is doing. Granted his playing on the new song Modern Day Delilah is more reminiscient of Vinnie and Bruce rather than Ace. Then again VV and Kulick could play circles around Thayer anyday.

The KISS from 1983 to 1995 was not some tribute band. They toured regularly and released albums as well.

Yeah, but to be fair at least half of the live sets from 1983 to 1993 were comprised of classic KISS tunes...as long as Thayer and Singer are in someone else's makeup, it's a sham.

The Kiss bootlegs I've heard say it wasn't "all faked." Out of all the the silly shit I've heard, some of the silliest is that Kiss used only the 'drums and crowd noise' from Detroit to make Alive II.

Anyone that has heard Kiss boots know they could play, and the songs were just more polished versions of what they played live night in and out. Of course they overdubbed, but not that much...

Okay, so maybe not all that interesting.

The funny thing is, the lyrics were at least partially influenced by an actual black dog that one of the members of Led owned and was moping around the studio at the time of recording (Labrador retriever I think)...

Between Kramer, Criss, Simmons, Stanley and Frehley, the stories about Alive post-concert overdubs run the gamut from "just a few vocal touch-ups" to "everything except for Ace's leads and Pete's drums were redone" to "the recordings of Pete's drums were slowed down because he tended to play too fast live, and the slowed down drums were played back and the rest of the band then recorded using them as a 'live click track' "...who the fuck knows what to believe anymore?

    Great album at any rate.

Yeah, there's a half a million different stories about how "live" Alive and especially Alive II are...safe to say there's probably a good degree of studio trickery going on with both of them, but they're not the only band in the 70s that touched up live albums in the studio (Priest)...or the 80s (any number)...or the 90s (Van Halen)...

Does happen, but at least they're still fun listens.

    True.

Actually, the live sets from 83 to at least 88 were not THAT heavy on KISS classics. Lots of stuff from Lick it Up and Creatures there.

By the end of the 80s KISS realized that they needed to play more of the old stuff since that is what most people wanted. By the Hot in the Shade tour in 1990, it was almost 90% 70s KISS.

One of the rumours that came about when KISS was doing Alive III was that the band were doing extended soundchecks and recording all of them "just in case" when the time came to record the shows, things weren't "on" that night. I don't know why that would matter because if they have the ability to record sound checks, why not record entire shows? Honestly very few live albums are all from one show.

Looks like a new line of guitars should be coming soon too. Paul looks like he has a reverse head-cock (stock) Silvertone V. Gene will probably repackage his axe. Maybe Thayer will use Ace's face on his guitar too

Is it just me, or does the whole idea of ANY version of Kiss in makeup/garb at this point in the game just seem really, really stupid?

    Yes.

The band flat-out said about 4 years into the initial reunion tour with Ace and Peter that they were doing a final round of shows and were going to hang it up afterwards. That entire series of concerts were played under the stated premise that it was a farewell tour.

Even Ace saw how ridiculous it was a couple of years later and left.

As far as people still attending the shows, the only thing I can compare it to is maybe having a favorite roller-coaster at a theme park, and going once a year to ride on it even if you've already been on it many times before...but eventually aren't you gonna get bored with it and want to try a new coaster?

I mean, Gene and Paul are just so flat-out greedy that were I still a fan of what the band is doing currently, I'd have a hard time reconciling the belief that they're just doing it for the money and as long as they are selling a concert ticket it matters little to them if I bought it or someone else did as long as there is an ass in the seat. Sure, maybe deep down most bands don't give a shit about their fans, but most don't wear their greed like a badge of honor the way he does, either.

GA, there are a handful of sites out there, but none of them is exactly what you'd refer to as a definitive source. Here are two of the better ones for identifying the boots. The first offers some downloads, but not all of the links work. The second is more of a listing than anything else. You may wind up needing to go to a site like Jamtothis in order to find them.

    KISS Bootlegs

    Carol's KISS Bootleg World

Also, you may wish to check out the DVD "KISSOLOGY Volume 1" (scroll down the link for a review and track listing), which features some pretty good footage from the mid seventies.

Big thanks, chefcraig!! Gotta hand it to your avatar as well.

Btw, in case someone hasn't seen this, one of the events on the way to the break-up of the original KISS...the band in Tom Snyder Tomorrow show, and Ace's laugh cracks me up every time..."I'm a plumber!". Gene doesn't look too happy most of the time...

This one has the original Midnight Special performances and they are really good in that performance. Ace in particular. Black Diamond kicks ASS!

Gene Simmons to Star in The Christmas Movie
Written by Christmas Movie Critic. Filed under Christmas Movies September 8th, 2009

Gene Simmons is starring in an upcoming holiday film, titled The Christmas Movie.

The movie is about a young, well-to-do Mary living in modern times, who gets pregnant and ends up in a trailer park. The KISS bass player plays Mary’s Jewish truck-driver father.

Other actors to star in the film include Elliott Gould, Linda Gray, Lainie Kazan, Cloris Leachman, Della Reese, Oleysa Rulin, Cybill Shepherd, and Fred Willard.

The Christmas Movie was written and directed by Dan Gordon, who is probably known for writing the script for The Hurricane.

No release date has been announced, but the Internet movie database at IMDB.com indicates the film is in post production.

    GA,

This is the probably the best KISS LIVE bootleg torrent site. Walker, Wooda, and a few others here as well as myself have accounts there.

I just checked out samples of the Sonic Boom album and I have to say IT SUCKS! Yawn, gag, snore! If you've heard Hot in the Shade and Psycho Circus, then you've heard this album. If you dig those, then you'll dig this.

The following clip contains some 30 second edits of the tracks from the new album. It doesn't sound that all that awful, at least to my ears. Then again, I wasn't expecting much to begin with, so anything short of being completely underwhelming and decidedly crummy can be viewed as a plus in my book.

Yeah, I hear ya. The chorus of "Russian Roulette" was lifted lock, stock and barrel from "Larger Than Life", "Never Enough" sounds suspiciously like "Lick It Up", "Nobody's Perfect" could be "Ladies Room", ect. I dunno, these boneheads have never been innovators in the first place, but I am pleasantly surprised at the results. Let's face it, this could have been a helluva lot worse.

"Nobody's Perfect" is pretty much the demo with the same name Gene recorded in 1985, "Hot and Cold" the verses and lyrics are just like "Rotten to the Core", that cool demo from the 70's!!

And Tommy Thayer's voice sounds like Joe Elliot in the beggining, circa "High n Dry" era...hell even the chorus of his song sounds like early Def Leppard!!!

Looks like this album will be a real classic!!!
