I had planned a vacation that would be a road trip from here is S. Fla to Charleston S.C. I would be visiting some friends for a few days that had relocated there, but first I'd stop in Orlando to visit my aunt and uncle and play some golf. The food at the turnpike rest stops was pretty crummy back then, and usually overpriced (this hasn't changed, 22 years later). So I packed a cooler with a few Cokes and some sandwiches, and took off.
Once at my relatives' home, I put the contents of the cooler in their refrigerator. The next morning, my uncle grabbed a Coke, took one swig and promptly spit it out. He gasped at me with a bewildered look on his face, and said there was something terribly wrong with it. Seeing this was one of the sodas I'd brought, I took a drink and announced it was normal to me. He then produced one of the sodas from the back of the fridge (he too had bought some Cokes locally anticipating my visit) and handed it to me. The difference was like night and day. His tasted sweet and refreshing, while mine was foamy and harsh tasting. I figured it must be the water used by the bottler down our way.
So I get to Charleston, and more or less the same thing happened. I bought a Mountain Dew and was blown away by how sweet it tasted. I even went to a supermarket and purchased several cases to bring back to Florida with me. And this Throwback Dew tastes much like that stuff I bought in S.C. It's a terrific find, and it's a shame it will only be available for a short time.
