You know, I gotta go with Eddie too. I mean, Randy was great, but there's two albums to judge from, frankly...not his fault, but the bulk of work certainly favors anybody you stand him up against...Van Halen had tighter production than Ozzy's first two albums did (I always thought they sounded kind of tinny in areas), and Diary of a Madman was rushed out and has never been a finished album, anyway...
Now, had Randy lived longer, I might easily go the other way, but...

I didn't see the episode when they did the Dave v. Sammy throwdown, but my son told me that Lita Ford picked Sammy... I guess fat, ugly, old has-been skanks need to stick together.

I don't think there's any comparison on the best solo question....
Eruption was revolutionary, Crazy Train was simply a good solo....

I notice lately is it's more in trend to pick Randy. Young, pure, innocent, lost potential, died young, the choice that might make you seem cool and have vast musical knowledge, etc... Eddie is the greater player simply based on the material he's released in his career. More of it, more range & styles (probably due to different singers, aging & booze), and versatility. Not sure if Randy laid any of the bass tracks on Blizz
But he's lost a lot of votes the last 11 years in particular by:
not caring about the fans
making very little music
not caring about the fans
making music that isn't that good
not caring about the fans
turning to the bottle
not caring about the fans
becoming a hermit/recluse
lying to the fans
turning into smeagel
not caring about the fans
screwing over David Lee Roth (Roth fans get mad)
screwing over Sammy Hagar (Hagar fans get mad)
screwing over Michael Anthony (Hot sauce aficionados get mad)
screwing over Valerie Bertinelli (fat chicks get mad)
screwing over basically everyone else he's ever made contact with
did I mention not caring about the fans?
Yet we always seem to forgive him based on six albums with the dim hope for one more.

Caught a few shows yesterday and seen the Eddie vs Randy episode, Randy wins the audience vote. The guys from Anvil were the guests. Only one of the hosts picked Randy and all the rest picked Eddie. My vote goes for Eddie, too. Sure Randy was awesome but look at how Eddie changed the face of modern guitar playing. Not only tapping but after Eddie came on the scene, everyone was copying his style and his guitar. It seemed like everyone was using a Strat style single pickup guitar because of Eddie.

Yeah, well, Randy didn't get the chance to have nearly as long a career as Eddie Van Halen...who knows what RR would have done had he lived...there aren't many rock guitarists (or even rock bands, for that matter) who were both prolific and reached standards of mind-blowing excellence with every single release.
Randy never did have an Eruption-like moment, but he was an excellent player. Lot of it was just timing, as Eddie, Randy and George Lynch were all contemporaries in the LA club scene in the 1970s. Eddie and Van Halen had the luck of the draw to get an album out on a major label first.
I'd say Randy and Eddie had similar styles, but never bought into the notion that Randy was some type of Van Halen clone, so how can one really compare the two in a "vs" kind of situation?
Whole deal of pitting one band against another is bullshit anyway. All comes down to personal preference in the end.

Well what happend to Jake who I think kicks Randys ass? also had two albums, still alive, and sounded better then Randy. I think Randy would have been history like Jake. its a dead boring style. Rands solos were like planned out scale runs, up and down. Ed did it with taste and style. Ed is the best hands down. come on..

Imagine if Ed had died tragically before 1984, say, right after Fair Warning.(A secret wish of mine for a long time) He'd have the death cult thing owned! Randy wouldn't even be in the running.
Eddie's biggest detractor is that he stayed alive and proceeded to peddle cheese flavored cat shit for the next two decades.

Edward is alive ??
Who even know if Rhodes could hold Eddie's jock if he was alive now. Eddie is a tone freak, his personal life is his hell...His guitar playing is legendary. Rhodes if he even made t to 2009,would probably be living in Ozzy's pool house and a regular on the Osbourne's!

Randy vs Eddie... wow... I gotta go with Ed. Ed revolutionized guitar playing second only to Hendrix. "Eruption" turned the entire guitar playing universe UPSIDE DOWN with it's innovations in tone, technique, and attitude. The tapping thing was brought to the spotlight by Ed, not by anyone else, even though others had done it before him. Even though Ed spent 2 decades suckin, his work in the late 70's-early 80's cannot be comapred to. Anyone who played rock guitar in that era, existed in Ed's long shadow. If Eddie would've died in 1984, well, I don't know if he'd be as regarded as Hendrix, but pretty fucking CLOSE. Sorry Randy, but them's the facts... and besides, I like Jake E. Lee better than Randy as a player anyways.... Sorry that's how I see it! Also, F Zakk.

It's kinda unfair to pick one over the other. Yeah Eddie came out with a release first, but I love Rhoads just as much. Those 2 Ozzy albums are impeccable man. Randy had an awesome style and I don't get how some people can call him an Eddie clone. I think their styles are totally different. Even when Randy tapped, he did it in his own style. Eddie does have a bigger body of work so really he does win by default.
