In the pic I posted that's what they did, mounted on a snare. Wonder how it would sound keeping the snare wires on?

Yup. I used an old Emperor X Black Dot for the bottom but tore off the coating because it was too thick. I've got a Pinstripe on the top, but I'm going to do some more adjusting tomorrow to get the best sound possible.

I hear ya on downsizing your set. The most effective guys I know are using an early Bonham-like set-up, consisting of a snare, one tom, a floor tom, a crash, high-hat and ride. Things really got out of hand when people started using double bass drum sets. They just started piling more and more shit on top of them. The invention of the double bass pedal for a single kick was a terrific thing, and makes the double bass kit obsolete. For one thing, you do not need to lug around as much shit, and besides that, unless you are playing ELP, Crimson or early Genesis covers, who needs the damned thing?

In the late 80's / early 90's I used a Double bass set up with 4 on the top / 2 on the floor + loads of cymbals etc.

These days i find less IS more, as I find I am more creative with just a Bonham set up and a twin kick pedal.

Here's a fun one......too bad most of Gene Krupa's stuff was only put on film in the movies. There doesn't seem to be a fucking film from that era that doesn't have Krupa in it somewhere. Gangster scene car chase, out of nowhere there's Gene and his band.

I read that Gene was a big influence on Keith Moon.

From watching this clip I can see where Keith's act came from.

I've never tried them. I had Pinstripes for a while, then switched to Coated Emperors for a long time and recently went back to Pinstripes. I'm using the Coated Emperor X on the snare and I get a really thick sound out of it.

I use no muffling in my kick and it's earth-shattering, I love it. Last weekend, I was recording some demos at a friend's house and I tested out the kick and he came running downstairs thinking there was a gunshot or explosion.

I had lost 3 snares to theft, but I picked this one up in 06 just passing thru a pawnshop and they didn't know what it was.. stole it for $65.

Ludwig followed Rogers into going all-maple plys for the shells in the late 60s.

Ludwig shells were mahogany/poplar/mahogany layered plys while Slingerland's were maple/poplar/maple and could take a ding better and looked better stripped of shell wrap finished clear.

First Buddy didn't play or endorse Slingerland drums from the 40's to the 70's.

Nope, Buddy's endorsement with Ludwig was from 1946 to 1959, then went to Rodgers from 1960 to 1966, then Trixon/Vox... then Fibes... then finally to Slingerland, which lasted from 1967 to 1976. Buddy's FINAL Ludwig endosrement period was from 1977 to 1980... then he continued to use/play his Ludwig's from 1981 to 1982... but WITHOUT an endorsement deal, as Buddy and Ludwig parted company for the final time in 1980, then he got a restored set of Slingerland Radio Kings from Joe MacSweeney over at Eames, and played those until his passing.
