Let's be honest here...when you read the words "Grand Funk" you do not immediately associate the term with great musicianship. On the contrary, what comes to mind is more or less a workman-like approach to getting some fairly basic songs across. Yes, that seemingly limited musicianship may have finally been manipulated by producers like Todd Rundgren or Frank Zappa to produce several hits, you still wondered if these guys were that much better than a garage band, or even KISS for that matter.

I always thought that Don Brewer was a simple time-keeper. That idea was recently thrown out the window while viewing this clip. It is an all out jam, featuring a keyboard/drum jam between Brewer and Funk keyboardist Graig Frost. Obviously a pro-shot tape from the venue ( Madison Square Garden 12/23/72), this material is unavailable on any GFR official release.

    I've got this show.Killer!
These dudes can seriously jam. Donnie Brewer is my drummers all time fav. GFR had tons of awesome songs long before they hooked up with Rundgren & Zappa. Those two names alone speak volumes about their (GFR's) talent. Cool find Chef!

BTW Farner is no slouch on the kit either. He's made numerous solo albums where he's played most of the instruments incl. drums!

Bog standard early 70's rock drumming.

Mainly using the old break the triplet up into 2 on the top 1 on the floor routine...

Bonham did it sooooooo much better.

Loved the first 4 GRF albums though.

You don't play the drums do you diamondthingy.

A pretty astounding jam between Stanley Clark and Steve Gadd.

Here Gadd demonstrates some of the fills he performed on the title track of Steely Dan's Aja album.

This is a clip from the Discovery Channel's Time Warp show. Using a HiDef slow motion camera, the hosts film things to reveal some at times startling details. Here, the camera is set on drummer Mike Mangini.

Alright, so I've got a question. I have this design I want to use for my kit (the interchanging Life and Death would go on each bass head). I have white shells so it works perfectly.

How would I go about getting this printed? Decals? And how much?
