Hey mods, webbies, other powers-that-be.
I'm trying to change my avatar, but I'm getting a message that I "may not upload animated avatars."
It meets all the file size requirements?
Any chance of being allowed to use .gif's?
Thanks.

if it's out on the internet, try linking to it instead of uploading it.
I've managed to get an arm animated at a decent speed...
Sarge, and myself agreed that it slows the site down a bit.
Not sure if it would help the speed, but perhaps to run a little "leaner and meaner" the Army could thin its ranks a bit?
I just reviewed the member listings, and there's something like 3,500 members...a large chunk of which haven't logged in once since 2004 or 2005.
If they're really interested in coming back, they'll re-join if their old profile is deleted.
And while you're at it, feel free to kick GAR's worthless ass out as well.

That's the kind of mistake that Mezro made when he ineffectually deleted half the site because he didn't know what he was doing.
Dead user accounts do not affect the speed of the place. Large images on every page do.
It's sensible to limit the size of avatars and stop people putting lots of crap in their signatures.

you're just mad I didn't pick the Sam Jackson one. Give it time.
As for slowing down the site, that would only occur in very specific circumstances, and once you all download the avatar it's cached client side and does not incur an additional request from the web server.
There is more overhead as a result of querying the underlying database and formatting the html for each page than an animated avatar, unless that avatar is saved in the database as well (mine is not)
If the image is hotlinked, there is no overhead on the roth army servers at all (though you run the risk of irking the person hosting the image)
If your animated avatar is within the size reqs you should be able to get it associated with your profile with no problem.
Also I talked to hitch1969...
He's about to drop a bomb of new aliases... and classic hitch1969 for the re-vamp...
I'm not at liberty to say who his new target is... but there is a new Mike B...
And he's gonna end their career.... stay tuned....
