WASHINGTON - The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.


PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.


"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."


During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.


"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.


"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."


Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.


Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."


Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals. Cattle used for food are severely mistreated in many cases. I'd like some way to make their conditions better. Same with the way chickens are raised. If I had the choice to buy meat from a known source where the cattle were raised & treated well, I'd pay the few extra bucks. PETA just goes way overboard with what they do which causes very few to take them seriously. If they concentrated efforts into more reasonable & sensible areas, they would have many more supporters.

Try spearheading a campaign to have chickens raised for food treated humanely and pass it on to PETA. Guarantee they respond to you as a murderer that you even consider eating them at all.

Not to mention that - because of the Monsanto/ADM subsidies - the factory cows are force fed corn instead of the grass that would be their normal diet. And all the bovine growth hormones and other chemical shit.

I grew up eating the "free range" beef that lived on my grandpa's farm. The meat from "happy cows" definitely tastes better, but good luck finding it anymore. Or good luck affording it if you do.

Whatever you've seen on TV was probably abusive practices that are used for producing certain types of specialty veal or crap like that.

Mostly all beef cattle are raised on open grazing land, provided quality food at will and spend most of their short life just eating and crapping. The key to producing quality meat requires a very well fed healthy animal. Due to grazing you can't pack more cattle on a piece of land than what it will naturally support. Unlike poultry you can't pack a thousand in a warehouse and crank em out.

Large poultry farms aren't really abusive either. In order for it to be profitable you have to raise them in a contained space. The controlled environments are necessary to ensure you have a healthy product...

Think about it this way... a chicken that roams around the yard eating bugs, trash and whatever the happen to walk up on isn't going to be happier than one raised in a large barn and fed and bred in a clean controlled environment. Clearly one raised in the controlled environment will be healthier and taste better than one left to it's own vices.

Happy chicken or cow doesn't taste better than farm raised. Plus neither have any idea what happy is...

I have always maintained people change their tune quickly when they are thrown into a survival situation. A lot of the stupid, modern philosophies and worries go out the door quick when you are starving and cold. Vegitarianism and exteme animal rights are luxeries that people who live in the world's richest nations can afford because they live in an environment where they have a choice. As I stated previously you can use a "veal farm" as an indicator of the cattle industry over-all. Which is the image you've attached. The methods used to produce high end veal are not humane and given it's loss in popularity among consumers I don't see the practice continuing much in the US... Europe has more of an interest in veal.

If you take a trip out of the big cities out to the stock yards, feed lots and cattle ranches across the US you won't find any wide-spread abuse or terrible conditions for the animals that end up on your dinner table.

The last month most livestock headed for the table are fed medicated grain. Mostly to clean their systems out, but also for the reasons Zah state.

Where I live there are still a few select people that keep cows/sheep/pigs but they are few in numbers and for personal consumption (AND they've been doing it for generations). One of the "new" local do gooders got SO upset over seeing the cows standing out in the rain, she came to town meeting with a far reaching bylaw amendment that would all but outlaw livestock. It had mandatory square footage building (think large doghouses) requirements for EACH cow out in the fields, and high fines for leaving them out in the rain, so many cubic feet of dry bedding (at all times) and heated barns among other wild rules. She even went so far as to include chickens as she thought it was inhumane that they be out in the rain also ( The chickens she refered to were in an enclosure with a coop, but she wanted the owners out there to make sure they were all inside when it rained).

Needless to say it was tabled but a man came forth (that runs the last working farm) and invited the woman to come over and try to move the cows into the barn in the next rainstorm. His statement was "The cows do what they want to do, not what YOU think they should"

The guy with the chickens couldn't stop laughing the entire meeting....
