Roethlisberger one of nine defendants in sexual assault lawsuit

RENO, Nev. -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit, his lawyer said, denying the claim.

The lawsuit was filed Friday in Washoe County District Court accusing Roethlisberger of assaulting a woman in July 2008.

Roethlisberger is one of nine defendants listed in the online court docket report. Further details of the lawsuit were not available Tuesday morning.

"Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone ... The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct. If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated," David Cornwell, Roethlisberger's lawyer, said in a statement released early Tuesday.

A phone message and e-mail from the AP to Cornwell were not returned.

Attorney Calvin R. Dunlap, of Reno, filed the lawsuit, according to court documents. A telephone message left for him was not returned.

Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said Tuesday the team is aware of the lawsuit, and "we are gathering information."

Complaint gets very specific regarding interaction between McNulty, Roethlisberger
Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2009 10:46 AM ET
We've finally obtained a full and complete and reliable copy of the complaint filed against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in Nevada.

The complaint contains very specific allegations, which either helps prove that the event actually occurred -- or which demonstrates that the plaintiff, Andrea McNulty, has a very active imagination.

McNulty, who says in the complaint that she has worked at Harrah's since March 2003, alleges that she was assigned to serve a concierge-style function on the Penthouse floor of the hotel during the 2008 American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

McNulty alleges that, on July 10, she and Roethlisberger had a conversation about fly fishing, and that they talked about the fact that McNulty is an avid fly fisherman. (Though, on the surface, the exchange isn't relevant, the contention -- if true -- shows that there was at least a minor relationship between McNulty and Roethlisberger prior to the incident.)

As to the incident itself, it allegedly occurred on Friday, July 11. McNulty claims that, at approximately 10: 00 p.m. local time, Roethlisberger returned to his room with a young woman, who left roughly 20 minutes later.

McNulty says that Roethlisberger walked the woman to the elevator, and that Roethlisberger then stopped to talk to McNulty and other staff, for roughly 20 minutes. (Obviously, it'll be critical to determine who these other staff members are, and what they have to say.)

As he was leaving, Roethlisberger allegedly told McNulty that the sound system on his television wasn't working. She offered to have someone from engineering fix it, but Roethlisberger said he would call her about it later.

Roethlisberger allegedly called her a few minutes later, and he said that the television was still broken. She offered to have someone go to the room and fix it. He allegedly asked her to come and "take a quick look" at it.

McNulty claims that she tried to call a couple of other colleagues to handle the situation, but that she couldn't reach anyone. She alleges that Roethlisberger called again and asked her when she was going to fix the television.

Citing a direction from management to ensure that Roethlisberger had an enjoyable trip, she decided to try to fix it herself.

McNulty claims that, when she arrived at the room, he was wearing a T-shirt and athletic shorts. She adds, for no apparent reason other than to show the clarity of her recollection, that the room was a mess.

Roethlisberger showed her the television that was malfunctioning, located in suite's bedroom. Using the remote, she determined that there was no problem with the television or the sound system.

She claims that, as she tried to leave the room, Roethlisberger blocked her path, and that he "grabbed [her] and started to kiss her."

She claims that she was "shocked and stunned that this previously friendly man, that appeared to be a gentleman in her previous contacts with him was suddenly preventing her from leaving, was assaulting and battering her."

McNulty admits that she didn't try to fight Roethlisberger, citing his size and strength. She claims that she "communicated her objection and lack of consent," and that he nevertheless began "fondling [her] through her dress and between her legs."

She claims that he pushed her onto the bed, and despite her alleged protests he "pulled her underpants off and proceeded to penetrate her."

McNulty claims that she told him, "You don't want to do this." She also claims that she said, "Please don't," and that she told him she was not on any type of birth control.

She claims that he said in response, "Don't worry, I'll pull out," which he ultimately did.

At that point, he allowed her to get off the bed. McNulty claims that she went to the bathroom, and "tried to pull herself together." When she emerged, she claims that Roethlisberger asked, "There are cameras on this room, aren't there?"

She responded by saying, "Yes, there are cameras everywhere."

McNulty alleges that he then seem worried, and that his tone became "stern."

"If anyone asks you, you fixed my television," he allegedly said. "You fixed my television. Now go!"

We'll be posting separately the allegations relating to the coworkers at Harrah's, most of which are based on conduct occurring after the alleged assault.

Again, these are only allegations in a civil complaint. There is, to our knowledge, no criminal complaint or investigation, and Roethlisberger through lawyer David Cornwell has strongly denied the contention.

Still, if the allegations set forth above are true, and if sufficient evidence can be compiled to prove that, then this thing could get very ugly for Roethlisberger.

    Florio is on the case!

Questions arise regarding McNulty's psychiatric care
Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2009 11:37 AM ET
In her complaint against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, plaintiff Andrea McNulty claims that she checked into a Reno hospital on September 25, 2008, with major depression and anxiety. She attributes her condition to the alleged sexual assault.

But our friends at Joe Buck's favorite web site
(LOL!) report that "[s]ources connected" to the case claim that her psychiatric care is unrelated to any alleged interaction with Roethlisberger.

Instead, the sources claim that McNulty's psychiatric problems arose from a bizarre situation involving McNulty and another man's wife.

Here's the story, as best we can understand it.

Per TMZ, McNulty was involved with a married man. The married man's wife created a phony e-mail account, posing as a solider in Iraq, apparently in the hopes of gaining information about McNulty's relationship with the married man. A former coworker of McNulty's claims that McNulty "fell in love" with the fictitious soldier, and that McNulty began telling people they were engaged.

The wife of the married man stopped the correspondence, and McNulty then began telling people the fictitious soldier was killed in action.

TMZ also reports that McNulty and Roethlisberger had a consensual "sexual liaison" in July 2008.

Without knowing the identity of the sources for this information, it's difficult to properly assess it. If, for example, TMZ has gotten the information from coworkers named as defendants in the case, they have a clear incentive to blame McNulty's problems on something other than the Roethlisberger situation.

Indeed, it's a standard part of the playbook for anyone who is sued in civil court. The plaintiff almost always is attacked, and a female plaintiff claiming sexual misconduct invites a healthy dose of what became known as the "nuts and sluts" defense whenever someone directed allegations of sexual misbehavior at a certain former President who eventually had no choice but to admit his deeds, as to at least one former partner.

So we're continuing to keep an open mind as to all sides of this one, and we'll continue to provide updates as events warrant.

Coworker: Assault claim is not true

Coworker: Assault claim is not true
    Sunday, August 09, 2009
By Michael A. Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Nevada woman who in a civil lawsuit accused Ben Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her last year boasted to a co-worker of having consensual sex with the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and said she hoped he had impregnated her, according to a sworn affidavit filed in court in Washoe County, Nev.

Shortly after telling former co-worker Angela Antonetti she'd had a tryst with the quarterback during a celebrity golf tournament at Harrah's Lake Tahoe, the 31-year-old woman "expressed to me she was hoping for a 'little Roethlisberger,' " Ms. Antonetti said in the affidavit filed Friday. The women both worked as casino hosts at Harrah's.

Ms. Antonetti also said the woman asked her to travel to Pittsburgh in August 2008 for a Steelers game and to try to "run into" Mr. Roethlisberger. Around the same time, Ms. Antonetti said, the woman asked her to obtain Mr. Roethlisberger's cell phone number from a Harrah's executive casino host. She said she told the woman it was inappropriate and improper for her to use Harrah's resources to try to contact the quarterback.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette does not identify accusers or victims of sexual assault. The woman's attorney, Calvin R.W. Dunlap, said he had not received Ms. Antonetti's affidavit and had no reaction to it.

Mr. Roethlisberger has denied sexually assaulting the woman. His attorney, William David Cornwell, yesterday said, "We will let our [court] filing speak for itself" and declined further comment.

In her affidavit, Ms. Antonetti said the woman was upset in the summer of 2007 about a married man ending a relationship with her. After that breakup, Ms. Antonetti said, the woman said she had started an online romance with "Ben," a U.S. soldier serving in Iraq but discovered after the 2008 golf tournament that the online relationship was a hoax. That incident made her "very emotionally distraught," Ms. Antonetti said. Weeks later, the woman took a leave of absence from work from September until around Thanksgiving.

Ms. Antonetti, who said she left Harrah's to be an executive casino host at the Atlantis in Reno, said the two met for lunch in March. Ms. Antonetti said the woman told her she was going to sue Harrah's, that she had a great lawyer and "the lawsuit would be big news that I would definitely hear about."

The woman's lawsuit against Mr. Roethlisberger also includes a number of Harrah's employees whom she claims tried to cover up the assault she alleged. Ms. Antonetti said she was "absolutely shocked" on July 21 when she learned that the woman had claimed Mr. Roethlisberger had assaulted her "because I knew [her] allegation ... was false."
    Kaitlynn Riely contributed.

Cops: Big Ben & Accuser Went Bar Hopping

    Posted Mar 5th 2010 7: 00PM by TMZ Staff
Ben Roethlisberger and the woman accusing him of sexual assault visited "multiple establishments" together before the alleged incident, this according to the Milledgeville Police Department.

Milledgeville Deputy Police Chief Richard Malone just concluded a news conference, confirming Roethlisberger is at the center of a sexual assault investigation that allegedly took place at the Capital City nightclub.

According to police, the alleged victim is a 20-year-old female student from Georgia College & State University.

Police say the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was interviewed and released and thus far has not been charged with a crime.

Ben's agent claims Roethlisberger did nothing wrong.

for everyone out there not from GA, Milledgeville is little town in middle of fuckin nowhere. somewhere between Macon and Augusta. it was the state capital about 100 years ago. there's nothing there but a state prison and a college. Ben was trolling college bars for 20-year old chicks.

my first question when I heard this was, "what the fuck was he doing in Milledgeville, of all places?" I just read, however, that he owns a home on Lake Oconee, which is about 30 miles north of there. I don't know why an Ohio kid, who works in Pittsburgh, decided to buy a lake house in the middle of nowhere Georgia, but it is a nice high-end, golf course type community down there. lots of folks with money out of Atlanta have vacation or retirement homes out there.

what a fuckin' image: punk-ass NFL QB living out in Tunafish, GA with a bunch of rich 60 year old white men with bad pants. for shits and giggles, he gets in his Hummer and drives 30 miles to some two-bit college town to hit on 20-year old redneck girls.

Probably. I hate to see it though because the dude seems like a pretty cool guy. I do know he is a damn good QB who needs to start making better decisions and I bet that is exactly what the Steelers, as an organization, are thinking as well.

    It just doesn't make sense....

You've got what is probably a plush summer home 30 minutes away, but yet you want to bang some college chick in the bathroom of a club ??

The Pittsburgh PG's story makes a distinction though... The first woman never reported it to the cops, this one did at the first opportunity....

don't be such a fan, VA. while this may be true, we don't know the facts yet.

at the very least, Ben's certainly been displaying some massively poor judgment. he shouldn't be out trolling for hotties at small-town college bars....

At best, Big Ben's image is shot

Mark Kriegel is the national columnist for FOXSports.com. He is the author of two New York Times best sellers, Namath: A Biography and Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich, which Sports Illustrated called "the best sports biography of the year."

    Updated Mar 9, 2010 12:04 PM ET

Eighty-eight yards from the end zone, with two and a half minutes remaining in Super Bowl XLIII, Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers on one of the great, game-winning drives in football history.

Of course, he had more than a little help from his receiver, Santonio Holmes, who accounted, quite acrobatically, for 73 of those yards. But in a larger sense, the game conferred a special -- potentially immortal -- status on a quarterback who had grown up idolizing John Elway. If Roethlisberger, who wears No. 7 in Elway's honor, was big, occasionally reckless, prone to both improvisational magnificence and mishaps, he was also, undoubtedly, a winner.

It's worth noting that Elway didn't win a Super Bowl until his fourth try, when he was 36. Roethlisberger, on the other hand, was 23 when he won his first, the youngest starting quarterback to win one. By 27, he added a game-winning drive to his Super Bowl resume.

But now, just a week removed from his 28th birthday, you are again reminded that all the winning bestows no special status beyond the white lines. The ability to maintain composure in those final, frantic seconds of a ballgame is, unfortunately, no harbinger of one's dignity as a man. With a civil lawsuit for sexual assault already pending, Roethlisberger finds himself the subject of a criminal investigation for the same alleged offense.

And the best thing you can say here is that Big Ben's a big dope, a jackass who has jeopardized his precious beef-jerky endorsement.

Next best? His conduct deserves the strictest scrutiny under commissioner Goodell's "zero-tolerance" policy.

But there's another possible outcome: indictment. Criminal charges might finally settle the debate as to whether white quarterbacks and black quarterbacks are held to different standards by the press and the public. (Hey, if there was evidence to believe Michael Vick was a thug -- even before the dog-fighting charges -- there's enough to consider Roethlisberger a lout).

But it won't get to that point, at least not according to the assurances issued Monday by his lawyer, the inestimable Ed Garland. "No sexual assault occurred," said Garland. " . . . The truth of the events should cause this investigation to end without a criminal charge."

The NFL has been very good to Garland. His clients have included Ray Lewis (whose murder charge was busted down to a misdemeanor after he ratted out his friends), Jamal Lewis (who did a mere four months for his role in a major-weight federal drug case), and Pacman Jones (who received a suspended sentence and 200 hours of community service after being charged with two felonies for a strip-club altercation that left a man paralyzed).

That's good news for Roethlisberger, the defendant. But what of the Super Bowl hero?

I think that guy's done. Again, let's take the best-case scenario. I'm not saying Roethlisberger is a rapist. I just know that, at some level, he suffers from the same malady that affected Garland's other clients: a star ballplayer's sense of entitlement.

To this point, the most damning testimony to Roethlisberger's image has come from Amber Hanley, a 21-year-old student at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga. She had the privilege of meeting him in the VIP area of Capital City, a local club, last Thursday night.

From the AP: "She said she asked the quarterback to take a photo with her friend, who was a fan, but he seemed disappointed that's all she wanted. Hanley said she rolled her eyes, and Roethlisberger called her an expletive and walked away. Later, Roethlisberger was aggressively hitting on another girl, Hanley said."

Doesn't take much to imagine what that expletive was. The story has a ring of truth, no?

Later still, a 20-year-old sophomore claimed she was assaulted by Roethlisberger, who had been to at least one other bar that night, in a bathroom at the club.

Again, as it's not my job to indict the guy, I'll assume the very best. So here's a guy who has been a full-blown celebrity for at least five years. The period of his fame coincides with the age of cell-phone cameras and the like.

But it seems to serve no warning. In fact, by now you may be acquainted with the candid shot of Roethlisberger with a T-shirt that reads: "DRINK LIKE A CHAMPION." The hottie next to him is smiling, but Big Ben can barely open his eyes. His is the unmistakable look of a slob.

Two Super Bowl rings. A $102 million contract. And he's still doing shots with college kids. Way to go, champ.

As a long time Steelers fan I gotta say I am about done with this guy. I mean, its always something with this guy. Motorcycle wrecks, bad teammate, and now he can keep his hands of the ladies.

Ben, IMHO, is obviously borderline retarded. I mean who in their right mind 7 months after being accused of rape puts themselves in the exact situation?

I know I am gonna hear, "Dude, he's young and rich, just tryin to have some fun". That's fine. Go sign with the Bengals or Raiders, grab all the jailbait tail you want. Go to jail. Piss your career away. Fine. Just don't do it in a Steeler uniform.

Not from me. It Rapistberger (LOL @ that!) has any kind of personality, genuinely likes women, and is the least bit sensitive to them---he should be rolling in women and having them practically trying to rape him. If you're a celebrity with money, you have to be a major asshole to be getting into this shit year after year...

Who fucking cares. He's a football player, not my fucking family.

He's paid 100 million to win football games.

If he happens to be a fucking cuntbag on top of that, shame on him. He'll end up out of football or in jail.

If it turns out to be a $2 whore looking to cash in...well...Roethlisberger won't be the first moron to win super bowl for the Steelers.

Bradshaw's still cashing in, and nobody's going to confuse him for a rocket scientist.

I flat fucking amused at Steelers fans that are "let down" by his behavior. You know, because 28-year-old males are so fucking smart to begin with. Go to the mall, count every 28-year-old you see, and know this for sure...

...if there's a 20-year-old hottie around, they'll want to fuck it.

Bottom line? Roeth is a QB, not a rocket scientist. "Let Down?" Didn't he win two super bowls? Pussy isn't steroids, they are going to take them away...

The latest supposedly is that Ben admitted to the cops that they had "sexual contact" (read: hummer), that she then hit her head on the floor, and they did not have "sexual intercourse"....

The testimony for this could be really entertaining...

Last night's episode of South Park was dedicated mostly to Tiger Woods and his dirty, dirty sex scandal, but show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone left some room for Ben Roethlisberger(notes), too.
Large Benjamin appeared in a couple of scenes with a bunch of other celebrity "sex addicts," including Bill Clinton, David Letterman, Charlie Sheen, Eliot Spitzer, David Duchovny and Michael Douglas. Animated Ben didn't have a lot of lines, but was generally portrayed as a big, cross-eyed, dopey oaf.
I'd love to embed a clip here, but South Park language and content prevents me from doing so. You can see it here. Again, I warn you of the profanity and naughtiness.
In other Roethlisberger news, TMZ is reporting that he has -- forgive the expression -- pulled out of the Kraft Nabisco Championship Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament scheduled for March 30 and 31st. No big surprise there. Roethlisberger isn't exactly embracing the media spotlight these days.

Another one of those classic genius posts, sure to generate responses. You log on the next day to see what your witty gem has produced to find no one gets it and 2 knotheads want to stick their dicks in it... Well played, sir!!
