Yeah and Idol was never the same without him. Stevens may not have been the greatest rock-riff writer (wow, try saying that out loud three times) but he did come up with some catchy introductory hooks and highly-driven feedback fills that more textured Idol's tunes than just being a loud, annoying supportive-type guitar player resorting to playing a note/solo in between every word Idol ever sung. 'Blue Highway' from Rebel Yell is a perfect example of how Stevens knew what to play and when. Even his bombastic intro for 'Rebel Yell' is sheer genius.
i still like Exposed, mainly because Steve did all the guitars and bass on it. saw 'em that year also, Steve looked bored playing Mick Mars' guitar parts.
i don't have any proof of this...but i have a feeling that when Vince left Motley WB told him that a condition to signing him was if he did the first record with Stevens. Atomic Playboys didn't really do that well, and i think WB balked at a second Stevens solo disc...this way they could get something out of both Vince and Stevens with little risk.

Blue Highway on the Whiplash Smile tour was excellent. whole show was.
saw Idol on the Charmed Life tour, with Mark Younger-Smith replacing Stevens and it wasn't the same. a decent show and disc, but just not right. skipped the Cyberpunk tour (mainly 'cause i thought the disc stunk) and have seen Idol/Stevens every time they've come though town since.
Stevens pulled off some Wes Montgomery style jazz runs on a tune on Whiplash Smile of which the name escapes me at the moment, but very impressive. I liked that CD a lot, and there were other cool tunes on the Rebel Yell CD too...
And speaking as a guitarist who plays covers "Rebel Yell" among them, I can tell ya, to play the intro to that tune as he does these days (simultaneously playing the keyboard and guitar part from the record) via claw-picking is nearly fucking impossible...it's weird and poly-rhythmic, and he makes it look easy!
I just cheat and make the bass player do the root notes...

Weird. I tell the bass player to stfu, but he still plays those roots...
Even though he knows I nail the intro.
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?
