Dave on Guitar

After seeing the latest bullshit from that Fat Oaf Hagar I thought I would put up the nice guitar bit from Roth Radio.

Hagar talks a lot about how he is a musician and Roth isn't and then goes on to show his typical mediocrity with a lame pentatonic party piece.

Personally I think this is much more accomplished...

Probably the single most overlooked part of CVH.
Dave could actually play. Yet he never attempted
to be a backup guitarisst to Ed. Too much respect.

Cant say the same for hagar...

How could anyone start hitting shit power chords
while a maestro was at work ???

You have no blues if you don't have vibes. You can technically play the notes and get ZZZZZZzzzzzzz. Dave has vibe. Sammy was stupid enough to think he could stroke some guitar on stage with Eddie. He looked like a poser. Dave would do his thing and let Eddie do his thing. Ice Cream Man being the perfect example. Sammy would be waddling around with a red guitar trying to play with Eddie.

I think most people assumed that Eddie played this until this radio thing.

"That's the big wheel on the front of that locomotive" made me smile.

It's a shame that by the time he did this on the radio there were very few of us left listening.

I think I was one of the millions who looked on just fucking aghast at that "Why Can't this be Love" video with Hagar playing the solo.

5150 was shit but that was the end.

man ....after hearing this...I'm thinkin' Dave wrote a lot more of the guitar riffs than any of us will ever know......In the public eye, the man gets no credit for his contribution to CVH, songwriting, vocals and possibly many of the guitar ideas too.....Daves an awesome mother f%^&er.

Indeed.

As a failed musician it always annoys the fuck out of me when the Van Halen sisters talk about Roth's contribution as being the lyrics.

The vocal melody is at least 50% of most songs and Roth's talent and more obscure influences are absolutely key to the success of Van Halen.

EEAS is more Van Halen to me than 5150.

Without a doubt. The full-on art direction had one foot out the door on the sixth record, resulting in a worldwide smash single. Orwellian.

To get a great appreciation of what Dave brought to Van Halen, just listen to Van Halen without Dave. On second thought.....

Yup, I fell into that trap too.....truth be told. I bought into the whole Diamond Dave persona and it wasn't until 5150 came out I realized how much of an impact Dave had to the music Van Halen created. The proof was there.....I don't care if most of those songs were written or tracked with Dave's input, it's not a CVH record and that's because Dave's not on it.

He did write many of the melodies and I'm sure came up with many riffs, too. Even Spammy said that Eddie can't write complete songs and had trouble with melodies, as far as coming up with them. You can see that in the awful musical output that was VHIII. Shows you just what type of COMPLETE songwriter Eddie is, which is not much. The guy writes some incredible riffs and is of course the main reason CVH made it big but not in a long shot the only reason. CVH was a complete package and Eddie and Dave had to have each other to make it work. The whole was larger then the individual's parts, IMO.

Now with hindsight I come away with the notion that Dave's input in CVH was far more than lyrics and Eddie just wanted to perpetrate the myth that he was the sole writer in the band. Typical lies/understatements that have been coming out of Eddie's mouth for years.

I think DLR's guitar work is pretty overlooked. I've seen a video on youtube of him playing the blues and he's pretty good, but I just don't his guitar style would fit with Eddie's guitar work.

As a guitarist for over 20 years, in bands, on stage and in the studio, I would like to state...
Eddies Van Halens guitar playing is extremely blues based.......
but you would only know that if you tried to play anything of Eds.....
He just didnt repeat his licks in the standard blues fashion.......
and his phrasing is what sets his style miles ahead of others......where most guitarists resolve each lick quickly...Ed makes the story alot longer before he hits the punch line.......Kinda Like Daves talkin.......there all sorts of neat tidbits along the way, and then Bam the zinger.........

The magic of the whole Classic Van Halen thing is a tounge in cheek humor, musicly, lyricly and definately in performance.......

. . . sweet clip . . .

. . . still think maybe dave played the acoustic intro on take your whiskey home. kinda sounds like his style . . .

. . . this dave radio clip speaks directly to something i've always believed at the very least CONTRIBUTED TO and may have even been RESPONSIBLE FOR the virtuoso greatness of eddie van halen and perhaps yes even alex van halen's greatness as well:

. . . dave was himself a pretty damn good guitar player and musician, not to mention a master lyricist and all around genius. in fact in hindsight you can see it is david lee roth who is responsible for shaping the overall image of the van halen party machine. now we have to assume eddie had an ego the size of cleveland so its safe to assume he was driven like a madman to be a much better guitar player than his lead singer. i believe it was this competition with dave's artistic abilities and talents that PUSHED eddie to become the GREAT GUITAR GOD -- EDDIE VAN HALEN that he instantly became after van halen 1 and is of course renowned for today . . .

Fuck whatever Hagar says.

He's as clueless as his fans.

Dave IS a musician and a songwriter. At least Dave can actually READ music while we know (as Al has even stated) that Eddie can't.

Dave should have done a solo CD with stuff just like this on it years ago. Hell, after the next VH CD Dave should do a solo project with him playing acoustic guitar and singing. I'd buy it.

I dug his solo spot on the 07/08 tour when he was playing a little acoustic while telling his story. He has a good feel for the instrument.

Exactly. If anybody wants to discern dave's contribution, listen to cvh, then compare it to: a) DLR and b) van hagar. Which is closer to cvh? DLR.
