While there was a time... when as a sport this was the preferred method. Frankly it only accomplished one thing... derailed threads and a board cluttered with personal battles and bullshit.
Other than a few weak-tit trolls that didn't have any real intention of hanging here or at DDLR did the quest for ownage ever really drive anyone away... nor did it do anything to minimize the offenders crap. 98% of the time it just motivated the irritant to higher levels of bullshit... case in point... Fab, Ole von Bizzaro, Hyman Roth, Herpes boy, katydid, etc...
The worst effect of all this is in most cases it drove membership away to other sites because most people want to discuss the topics in the forums rather than watch fools fight among themselves.
The solutions are simple... and still exist here. Have your dump, hitchworld or non-DLR/VH forums wide open and let people be as whacky, fight and off topic as possible. Then the mods and community in general adopt a simple self policing aspect... stay on topic in your Main, Sports, Gear, Music, Porn, specific forums.
This still alows your fun loving ball-busters, popgear heads, cross dressers and more colorful members to reak havok. But then doesn't drive off your core membership.
If it comes down to it... banning of a single irritant for the better of the board and community ends up being rare for those that can't be halfassed in line with the general vibe of the place. At DDLR the ban list consisted of about 5 members that just couldn't be tolerated anymore. Out of of hundreds of active members... that ain't much.
