    question about sampling/sequencing/software

    Hello Everyone,
As a keyboard player I never had a whole lot of interest in this until recently but...I'd like to learn how to sample things and what-not, for possible use in my own bedroom-synth kinda songs. I've seen it done really well with groups like Washed Out, Memory Tapes, Neon Indian...Usually what's actually being sampled is some obscure Italian disco from the early 80's or some shitty late 70's funk stuff that's slowed-down, sped-up, stripped of bass/drums/whatever, so that it sounds cool and becomes unique, usable. I was wondering what I would need to get started-->Fruity Loops Studio, Acid, other program(s)? I'm basically looking to learn sequencing software and sampling (specifically stripping the drums or something from a track) but I'm not sure where to start, especially with low funds. Anybody have any experience or insight in this category? I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks a Lot,
    Graham

Acid is pretty easy to use. No, not the drug.

Just when I thought you were making sense, you have to add the no part

I've used Fruity Loops and Meh......not a big fan.

Here's a link to Acid Sony Creative Software - ACID Pro 7 - Introduction

If I remember correctly Sonar had all that stuff in it, too. Plus you get the recording software and editing capabilities.
I loved using Sonar to get quick drum loops/click tracks up and running. I had the Yamaha DTX electronic drums. I'd play a few measures in real time and loop or copy/paste it to make my click tracks. Really easy to do and a live feel, too.

Didn't see anything listed there I can't (couldn't lol) do w/Pro Tools and Reason already, setting clicks for everything, and copy/pasted a few samples here and there, but as for a cheap stand-alone alternative? ..

*Edit: Second glance, Acid may have more extensive MIDI capabilities..hmmm must. read. more.

At over $200 bucks I'd say it's not a cheap stand alone either and Pro Tools, Sonar and other recording software seemed to be bundled with this stuff....so really if I was to spend the money, I'd buy the recording software. More bang for your buck and more functional.

Exactly, exactly. I've barely scratched the surface of the (albeit skeletal versions of their full counterparts) add-ons that came with my Pro Tools package! There's in addition to Reason Adapted, a sample editor called Celemony Melodyne, Aurturia and Way Out Ware Analog synth sample libraries and another Digidesign sample library called 'Xpandi'. A keyboard would actually come in handy about now...lol.

Bundle-packs like that kick ass -throw in some monitors and an interface and you're good to go...

Having lived 2 blocks from Larrabee Sound back in the day, I can say quite confidently Cubase Studio5, with a street price about $250 is what will go far in your hands.

Protools is on the way out for final tracking. Logic has been the cutting edge 3 years now.

He's asking about sequencing and sampling, Jay.

The fucking recording industry standard for how many years now? Oh, it's outdated by 3 years! Give me a fucking break....Sonar was cheaper at the time so I bought it but I still ran into a ton of compatibility issues when taking my home tracks (Sonar/Cakewalk) into any studio (Pro Tools).

Hundreds of studios, thousands of home users and now we find out from Clay it's outdated!

Glad I never bought that shitty ass, industry standard crap that is Pro Tools.....
How you feeling about the purchase of PT, Jay
