Well, that didn't take long for Robertson to exploit others suffering for his own self-aggrandizement that is "Operation Blessing" Remember them? Why they were the ones that claimed to help all of those Rwandan refugees in south Zaire by claiming they were the first to fly in food and medical supplies. Seems Robertson failed to mention his planes were really flying in diamond mining equipment for an African development company whose chief shareholder is Robertson himself.

Haiti is a shithole not because of any pact made with any devil but because it has no resources that can be exploited. Well, it did, and that was the slave trade but after that...At least the Dominican Republic has something in the way of gold and copper. I'm surprised Robertson was afraid to use the word "voodoo" as if was some kind of a...a...um...let's call it a "religion" shall we?

The two biggest hell holes I ever visited in my life were Ziare and Haiti. In a natural sense both could be paradise. Beautiful landscape but the hell is man made. Too many people, too little resources, largely due to mismanagement and corrupt politicians or business interests. As far as earthquakes go, we are having more of them all over and volcanic eruptions as well. Maybe one will happen in Pat's backyard next time.

It's actually voodoo that keep the Haitians down. Like all religions it's exploited to control the people. Very superstitious people. Much like members of The 700 Club.

So, will we now see a huge increase in the number of refugees on rafts floating towards Florida over the next couple of months? Honestly, I haven't heard of any of those in a long time, but I'm sure it's still happening. What was the rule again? If we caught them in the water we could send them back...if they made it onto the shore they got to stay? I just remember seeing tons of people bailing the raft & trying to get on the beach as fast as possible.

Eh. it is all God's. A lot of corruption there in Haiti.
Sadly that corruption makes for lackluster emergency response.
I am sure it is going very bad down there right now.
God willing, something good will come of it.
To put it simply, we need to worry a lot less about how to communicate our actions and much more about what our actions communicate.

Haiti is going to get a ton of international aid unless there is another big disaster that happens somewhere else. Plus, Hatians don't need much. If they have clean water, a place to get out of the weather, something to eat they are happy. They aren't spoiled like the New Orleans welfare rats and they have basic skills to survive a welfare rat doesn't have. Haiti could thrive on what FEMA wastes.

Haiti probably was better off than it was in the 1970's when I went there. It was horrid. I think it has been better off before this disaster happened. You typically have a refugee situation where no help comes or you have a tyranical government. When I lived in Hong Kong in 1977 you would have overloaded boats coming up from indo-China because Pol Pot was in action doing his horrendous stuff wen now know as the killing fields.

If they behave and there is law and order, the situation can be managed. The first few days will be rough as hell especially for those who need medical help. I cringe thinking about the poor people trapped under rubble dying a slow agonizing death with no body able to get them out.

There was a comment on Good Morning America about this...could not hang around to hear the actual story, but George Stephanopolous said something to the effect that it was not good....

International earthquake relief begins arriving in a devastated Haiti
Rescue teams, food and doctors land in Port-au-Prince. U.S. ships are on the way; one will serve as a floating hospital. Secretary of State Clinton says the response is 'coordinated, aggressive.'

By Tina Susman and Joe Mozingo and Ken Ellingwood

    6:43 AM PST, January 14, 2010

Reporting from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, and Mexico City -- Promised emergency aid from abroad began flowing into Haiti's earthquake-ravaged capital today as residents awoke for a second morning to a battered landscape of toppled buildings and legions of dead and injured, with many people still unaccounted for in the debris.

An Air China flight landed in Port-au-Prince before daybreak, ferrying a Chinese search-and-rescue team, medical personnel and tons of food and medicine, the Associated Press reported.

Three French planes brought in supplies and a mobile hospital, the news agency reported, and British relief workers arrived next door in the Dominican Republic, an important relay point for the wave of assistance that the world pledged in the wake of Tuesday's magnitude 7.0 earthquake.

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was en route to Haiti and expected to arrive Friday with helicopters to help shuttle relief supplies. The Navy also has dispatched the USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship, with 2,000 members of a Marine expeditionary force aboard and medical facilities that will allow it to serve as a floating hospital. It also has ordered two other amphibious vessels to set sail.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who scrapped an East Asia trip to help steer U.S. relief efforts, said in television interviews this morning that U.S. forces were moving as quickly as possible to help quake victims and that the next 24 hours would be "critical" to saving people. Clinton said the immediate goals were to treat the injured and provide food, water and shelter.

"It's a devastating situation," she told CNN. "But we've got a very coordinated, aggressive response going on. We've sent some of our crack search-and-rescue teams in."

Clinton said in a separate interview that the United States was prepared to provide help over the long term. She said there was no reliable estimate of casualties yet but that the toll would be in the "tens of thousands."

By some estimates, 3 million people were affected by the earthquake, roughly a third of the population of the impoverished Caribbean nation.

On Wednesday, President René Préval described the destruction as "unimaginable." Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said a preliminary assessment led him to fear that the number of dead could be "well over 100,000."

Rescuers, often equipped with little more than their hands, hunted for survivors amid a grim tableau of destruction. Entire hillsides of homes appeared to have tumbled, while in other areas structures stood unaffected next to piles of dusty debris. Some buildings lay in pancake-like concrete heaps.

Relief workers said it could take a day or two to know how many of Haiti's 9-million residents needed assistance.

Homeless or fearful survivors took shelter under tarps on the grounds outside the prime minister's office and elsewhere across the capital. As night fell, crowds filled downtown streets. People sought open-air spots to spend the night, either because they were afraid to be indoors or had no home left.

The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is a place where misery is an everyday condition, and disasters -- of both the natural and man-caused variety -- are not uncommon. At best, the government has made only halting progress toward improving the lives of its citizens. The quake, said to be the strongest in the country in 200 years, caused death and destruction on a whole new scale.

In a predominantly Catholic country that already relied heavily on United Nations relief, the dead were reported to include the archbishop of Port-au-Prince and at least 16 U.N. personnel, possibly including the head of the U.N. mission. Both the hotel that served as U.N. headquarters and the city's main cathedral were heavily damaged, as were the Parliament building, schools, hospitals and other hotels.

The U.N. reported that the main prison also had collapsed and inmates had escaped.

Some looting was reported, and about 3,000 police officers and international peacekeepers were trying to maintain security.

U.S. officials said most of the damage appeared to be concentrated around Port-au-Prince, a teeming city of 2 million that resembles a hive of gray concrete that creeps up a mountainside rising out of the Caribbean. The homes are mostly made of cheap, porous concrete made with sand from nearby quarries.

In the aftermath of the quake, entire big-box apartment blocks had collapsed along roads carved into the hills. Rubble had blown out onto the roads. Next to the debris lay bodies, their faces covered with sheets.

On Martin Luther King Avenue, just past a sign reading, "Bienvenue a Port-au-Prince," the slender legs of three young children poked out from under sheets. The bodies of three adults were strewn nearby.

At two badly damaged hospitals in the capital Wednesday, there were virtually no doctors or medical workers in sight.

Outside St. Esprit Hospital, bodies lay on the street, including that of a woman whose white hair showed above the sheet covering her, with a small child next to her.

But behind the compound's iron doors, the scene was worse: people dead and apparently dying on the ground as their relatives stood by helplessly, watching them. Some of the injured wept in pain; others lay silently.

One man dragged visitors to see his mother, who lay on her back wearing only a light yellow flowered robe. She was on the street just outside the hospital gate, one leg clearly broken.

"I don't know what to do," another man lamented as he dragged visitors over to look at his cousin, who lay on the ground covered only with a towel.

Many of those on the ground had been hooked up to IVs from the hospital, but apparently by their own relatives.

President Obama called the earthquake a "cruel and incomprehensible tragedy" and promised that the U.S. would help in any way it could.

"This is a time when we are reminded of the common humanity we all share," Obama said in televised remarks from the White House. "With just a few hundred miles of ocean between us, Haitians are our neighbors in the Americas and here at home."

The U.S. military deployed a 30-member team on Wednesday to assess the damage and help manage the response. U.S. Coast Guard helicopters evacuated four severely injured U.S. Embassy employees to the Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Wednesday that more than 100 of the estimated 45,000 Americans in Haiti had gathered at the airport to be evacuated. Officials said they had heard no reports so far of widespread casualties among U.S. citizens.

Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, commander of the U.S. Southern Command, said the military's immediate goals were to help restore telecommunications and get the airport up and running. The control tower was heavily damaged, and many commercial flights were canceled.

The L.A. County rescue team was to fly to Port-au-Prince on Wednesday night, officials said. It includes paramedics, structural engineers, search dogs, physicians and firefighters trained in using sophisticated equipment to find and free people trapped in collapsed buildings.

Kimberley Shoaf, associate director of the UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters, said residents of Haiti were likely to face an increased risk of dengue fever, malaria and measles. She also warned that the lack of healthcare could lead to complications among the injured.

Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Joseph, said that the "silver lining" was that the earthquake struck shortly before 5 p.m., when many office workers had gone home for the day.

The body of Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot was found in the ruins of his office on Wednesday, said the Rev. Pierre Le Beller of the St. Jacques Missionary Center in Landivisiau, France, who spoke to the Associated Press by telephone. He said that fellow missionaries in Haiti had told him that they had found Miot's body.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said the head of the U.N. mission in Port-au-Prince, Tunisian diplomat Hedi Annabi, was killed along with other U.N. personnel when the organization's headquarters in the Christopher Hotel collapsed. Kouchner said the information came from the Haitian ambassador to France. U.N. officials said 100 to 150 U.N. personnel were missing, including Annabi.

Troops from the U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti, mostly Brazilian, worked through the night to try to reach those trapped in the hotel. Rescuers recovered several bodies and seriously injured people.

The U.S. is expected to lead the international aid effort.

Obama said he had directed his administration "to respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives."

Rajiv Shah of the U.S. Agency for International Development will coordinate the response, Obama said.

Former President Bill Clinton, who serves as the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, called on people around the world to donate money to relief organizations or the U.N.

"We do not have the logistical or organizational capacity right now to handle a lot of things, even if we need those things," he said. "What we need now is food, water, supplies for first aid and shelter."

If we caught them in the water we could send them back...if they made it onto the shore they got to stay? I just remember seeing tons of people bailing the raft & trying to get on the beach as fast as possible.
Being a resident of the state that deals with this issue on a weekly basis, I can say that yes, you are essentially correct...providing the refugees are of Cuban descent. Otherwise, these desperate souls are denied entry to the country and are unceremoniously sent back with very little due process. For the moment the deportations have been curfewed, yet nothing has been said about what will happen to those that make it here during this tragedy in the coming weeks.

As bad as it is now, I think in three days it'll be much worse. What little people had to eat/drink will be gone and/or spoiled. So aid might get there, but not enough fast enough. I'm sure the looters are out in force. Not even to mention the 500K dead that will be rotting in the sun. THAT alone will kill even more people from the disease's brought on from that..

God, Jesus Announce Boycott of “The 700 Club”
By DB, on January 13th, 2010

Cite “Deep Philosophical and Religious Differences”

    Las Vegas – January 13

Jesus Christ, flanked by God, appeared at an impromptu press conference today to announce that They will immediately begin boycotting the television show “The 700 Club”, as well as all of its advertisers and any other program or entity in any way affiliated with the show’s host, Christian Broadcasting Network founder Pat Robertson, and that They encourage “anyone within the sound of our voices to do the same”.

The unprecedented move by the world’s most famous Father and Son team followed remarks Robertson made regarding the tragic situation in Haiti, in which it is feared as many as 100,000 people may have perished as a result of yesterday’s earthquake. Robertson attributed the earthquake to what he described as a “pact to the Devil” made by the Haitian people to aid in their fight for liberation from Napoleon’s France.

“We’ve just had enough of this guy baselessly invoking Our names when discussing his personal beliefs, particularly when it comes to politics. Also, it’s not like he doesn’t know Whose place it is to pass judgment, yet he continues to do so. We can only imagine that either he just doesn’t get it, or more likely, it’s all about ratings.” Mr. Christ went on to add, “And all those times he’s claimed to have spoken to Our Father here, all I have to say is, We have caller ID – the two have never had a conversation.”

Responding to reporters’ questions, Jesus, speaking on behalf of God as is Their custom, said, “I want to assure everyone that We, of course, are closely monitoring the situation in Haiti, and have canceled our planned visits to the Liberace Museum and Cirque du Soleil in order to focus more closely on events there. We will be leaving Vegas as soon as We resolve the issue for which We came and have finally determined if the ‘Elvis’ we’ve had with us for the past 33 years is, in fact, the King many have claimed. In the meantime, We will also stay accurately informed, as We often do, by monitoring The Borowitz Report.”

When asked if God planned to “call home” the controversial Robertson, who may turn 80 in March, any time soon, He responded, “These things are never finalized until the moment comes, but as things stand right now, this one’s not His call”.

We've all been impacted by the devastation in Haiti. We've seen the pictures and watched the videos with horror and dismay. To watch that kind of human suffering on television is one thing, but to truly grasp that kind of pain is something else entirely. It is unfathomable. Even the most active imagination can't totally comprehend the big picture.

As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, I've seen UNICEF's lifesaving work first-hand. I traveled to Angola in 2004, only two years after the peace treaty was signed ending a 27-year civil war. In 2005, I went to India for the 6-month anniversary of the tsunami. Sure, I had seen pictures from both places prior to my trips. I watched videos and tried to prepare myself. But what I couldn't get from a photo or video, were the smells of sewage and illness, the unbearable heat in a temporary shelter, the feeling of dirt covering my body. These are the things that will stay will me for the rest of my life.

To fully understand the effect of this earthquake, it's important to know some background on Haiti. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has been plagued by political conflict for most of its history. Since 2004, the country has suffered profound violence and lawlessness. The chaos has hampered basic services and prevented humanitarian assistance from reaching vulnerable children and families.

Issues facing children in Haiti even before the earthquake:

    * Haiti has the highest rates of infant, under-five, and maternal mortality in the Western hemisphere. Diarrhea, respiratory infections, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are the leading causes of death.

    * Some 60 per cent of people, primarily in rural areas, lack access to basic health-care services.

    * Numerous schools and hospitals have closed because teachers, social workers, and health providers could not go to work for fear of violence.

    * It is estimated that about 5.6 percent of people aged 15-49 years old in Haiti are living with HIV/AIDS. This includes about 19,000 children. Antiretroviral drugs are extremely scarce.

    * As many as 2,000 children a year are trafficked to the Dominican Republic, often with their parents' support.

    * Only a little over half of primary school-age children are enrolled in school. Less than 2 percent of children finish secondary school.

    * Approximately 1,000 children are working as messengers, spies, and even soldiers for armed gangs in Port-au-Prince.

Last night, as I sat in the comfort of my living room, watching the news and obsessively checking my Twitter homepage for the latest developments, I felt completely helpless. I cried, and then I did the only thing I could do...I wrote a check to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for $50,000. But I woke up this morning feeling that this wasn't enough. As I sat in my bed trying to brainstorm how to raise more money...I turned to Twitter and tweeted the following:

I'm constantly amazed by the power of Twitter. For my Birthday, with the generosity of my followers, we were able to raise $92,568 for my charity:water campaign, bringing life-giving, clean water, to 4,628 people in Ethiopia. For two weeks, I tweeted about the campaign and was so overwhelmed by the result.

So... it's on! I challenge any corporation to match my $50,000 donation to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. 100% of every dollar will go directly to supplies that include tarpaulins, water-purification tablets, oral rehydration salts, family water kits, medical supplies, medical kits, food, shelter, and protection.

Who is up to this challenge? Will someone help me help the victims of this catastrophe?

We should invade Haiti using the Marines and the premise of exploiting aid to them, while bulldozing the whole island into the sea and up for sale on feeBay.
