Dude, it did become a gimmick.
He did it several times in different concerts, always in the same part.
In fact, Dave "repeated" himself a lot, 'coz in those days, it wasn't as easy to record & share concerts as it is today.
So basically, he had a routine. And he'd add to that every time he came up with something new, either while he was on stage & something happened that made him think of something funny to say, or off stage.
You probably didn't change much since you were 8, anyway... I wouldn't say you're smarter than an 8 year old, for example. Quod Erat Demonstratum.
