Well I adjusted the audio (i.e. cranked up the bass real good) and have run it a few more times. Seemed to do the trick, it sounds MUCH better. Dave's voice troubles aren't nearly so obvious. And as usual, he was maximizing what he had at the time. Brian sounds very good - as does Ray.

But I do have to disagree that it could be a VH album. Although it's very pleasing, the style of music just isn't the same. Jesus, did I just infer that Eddie is necessary? Yikes.

    Oh dear.

The DLR Band is a bit rough, production-wise, but for me that's part of the charm.

In spite of a decent promotional push by Roth, the album (released around the same time as the CFTH autobiography) went nowhere. Yes, sometimes Roth and Co. might be guilty of trying a little too hard in spots on the disc of attempting to channel the spirit of CVH. A tune like Counter-Blast comes across like a second-rate Atomic Punk ripoff with some forced internet jargon/sexual innuendo substituting for lyrics. However, it was a welcome return to form for Dave. To be frank, although I appreciated the intent behind the YFLM album and the subsequent Vegas stint, for me the results were a bit less than stellar. The DLR Band album was a taste of what 1996 could have ended up being had the Van Halens pulled their heads out of their asses.

    Slam Dunk! fucking rocks.
Lose The Dress (Keep The Shoes) captures the atmosphere of a seedy encounter in a cheesy motel...or the back room of a strip club.
    Little Texas kicks ass.
King of The Hill kicks ass.
    Goin' Places is brilliant.
Shot as his voice might have been in comparison to his glory years, Roth belts the fuck out of Relentless for everything he's worth.
Blacksand is a neat little diversion.

Ray Luzier drums his fucking ass off. The various guitarists compliment the tunes just fine. Track-for-track, it is without a doubt the best Roth solo release since ALAE and pretty much miles above anything 'Van Halen' put out since 1985 in terms of spirit, attitude and energy, regardless of the dry sonics and sound.

Yeah, Dave's voice is a bit rough on the album. His voice sounds like the cumulative result of every late night soaked in whiskey with the occasional cocaine chaser. This is countered by his sense of humor, debauchery and image being put on display in spades, and (outside of EEAS) the DLR Band is the one post-1985 release by any member of Van Halen which recalls best what made CVH da bomb in the first place.
    Scramby eggs and bacon.

I found it in the import section of a record store a few months after it came out and paid about $35 for it. This was pre useful internet and I didn't even know it was out.

I'm too lazy to burn CDs so just got my mp3s for it from a bit torrent.

If you're stuck pm me an email address and I'll send it to you.

You can still find copies to buy over the web I think.

    Cheers!

Thanks everyone, especially Pus Licker !!
Nice to have the tracks in chronological order again..
On relisten, this album is even better than EEAS,
just lacking in the production, I feel Dave experimented
more with the LZ, dark side too..

Thanks Sesh too for the offer !

I need to play the song "Tight" with the Bass cranked up to MAX. That way, I can have my wife hop on a dildo tied to the sub-woofer.

There were several guitarists used for the album. Mike Hartman (R.I.P.) was on "Indeedido" and "King of the Hill" while the rest of the tracks were split between John Lowery (aka John 5 of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie fame) and Terry Kilgore (who was featured on DLR's "Your Filthy Little Mouth" album). I think John is the bet guitarist on the album and I was never impressed with Terry Kilgore ever. Terry has a generic sound and shouldn't be used for anything other than rhythm in my opinion.

Starwood made it through the album maybe twice. He remembers how excited he was...got it the first day it came out. Had such high hopes. Then, here it comes...B-Grade songwriting...the production quality was rookie...sounded like a demo. Dave's once primal screams had turned in yelps. Got embarrassed for the guy.
Simply put, the best parts of the album is the silence between the songs. An abortion.

Eat 'em and Smile was really good, I still listen to it like I listen to Van Halen, and that's all the time. I have a few EEAS bootlegs, and I tell you, it's really good stuff.
Reading Crazy From the Heat in four hours flat, in a cramped RV, on the return trip of a 3,000+ mile family outing to New Jersey is an enlightening experience you'll never forget.

Considering it was recorded and mixed in 10 days (i think) it's a pretty fine album.I would have to say probably the most luke warm Dave album was Diamond Dave. Still a good album but compare it with DLR band and suddenly the betty page album is sounding great

Simply put, the best parts of the album is the silence between the songs. An abortion.
Sonrisa Salvaje thinks Starwood is out of his fucking mind.

It has the credits for who played on what song in the linear notes of the album.

DLR Band sounds a bit dated to me.

Gretchen Mol was a surprize casting move but a good one in The Notorious Bettie Page.
