You could read more into the statement than that. Think about it, Zappa states that Ed was "playing me new stuff from his record" (or words to that effect). He doe NOT say that he was listening to actual recordings. For all we know, they were merely passing a guitar back and forth between them.

Since "Eruption" first assaulted our ears, I have literally heard thousands of guitarist do their own versions (or try to), but I have never heard anyone pay as much respect to this monster instrumental as Franks kid does.
Not even Steve Vai! Steve is one of those prodigies that can translate "Eruption" onto paper, or tablature, but he couldn't play it like Ed, or even Dweez!

January 24, 2001 - Dweezil Zappa must have a sore throat after talking about Van Halen so much this past weekend! Last Friday he called in to KSHE-95 in St. Louis to talk about the Van Halen reunion. He mentioned that six songs on the new album were done, (news that he repeated at NAMM the next day), but also added that the band is currently in counseling to keep the amicable juices flowing.
