Wow I made this one over 30 years ago with my dad and it's still on sale.

Well, you could start by checking my thread about my replica.
A word of advice do your homework. Gather as many photo's of the original Frankie. Study the changes it went through from '77-'84.
Go to the Fender site and grab their high res. shots. What I notices about the Fender pics. is that there are slight variations between their Frankies.
Take as much as you can from the REAL Frankie.
Take your time is another piece of advice I'd give you. Don't rush things. Eg: be meticulous when setting up your tape lines, let your layers of paint cure for a few days between sanding and relicing (longer the better)
Do some research from online "Frankie" forums.

Thanks a lot dude. I will have plenty of resources!
I'm not sure which Frankie I want to do though... I thought about maybe doing the 5150. I really like that one.

That one and the VH1 Frankie seem to be the easiest to replicate
I don't know about easy (Frankie), but they are his 2 coolest designs...
Wanna talk about desisions? This dude said "fuck it" and built 'em ALL!!!

I would say the easiest one to build would be the black n white stripe job.
It gives you access to use a wider variety of strat body styles for the cheapest price to build.
For example, you could find a Korean squier strat 1988 to 92 for around 50 to 80 bucks in really distressed condition with a maple neck, that would be a good base to start with.
Chuck the tuners, bridge and keep only the middle pickup jackplate and hardware. Score a used Duncan SH1B humbucker for around 40 bucks, Floyd Rose licensed bridge, and some gotoh tuners plus a new 500K pot and 3-way CRL original pickup switch. They make the cool clickbang noise when you turn up, drop the bar, and pluck the springs in back simultaneously at a harmonic..

You really have no clue, do you?!
Yes, chuck the tuners and buy some Schaller "Mini's" on Ebay for $40. Not Gotoh...
Don't keep the middle pickup. Keep the pickguard screws, and jackplate.
Buy a black pickguard cut for 1 humbucker and drilled for 1 vol. pot. You do not need a 3-way switch, or any switch for that matter.
For taping the body you will need 1" & 3/4" painters tape. I recommend 3m brand. Make sure it's the flexable kind not the shiny backed kind (it's useless for corner contours and wants to stay straight)
I used Krylon gloss black and Arctic white. Be sure to wetsand very lightly with 1600 grit and follow up with 0000 gauge steel wool (very lightly, of course). Do this after each colour step.
For relicing the wear points use 600 wet sand paper. (go slow, take your time)...
Thanks a lot bro! It'll give me food for thought. I'm sure we have plenty, again, PLENTY of the building materials you listed to use in the making. But, I'm thinking, about the Squier body, I don't think i'd want one. I'm sure I can come across a Warmoth swamp ash Strat body routed for one humbucker. They have plenty of those. Some guy on the local Craig's List listing is sellling an all black stripped down Strat body routed for humbuckers... I think he wants like $30. No name brand for sure, but it'd be a start nonetheless.
Squier bodies are not cut right and they are way too thin...
Junk!

Why on Earth would you need a 3-way switch for a guitar with one pick-up? It would be like having a fake Hurst shifter in a car with an automatic transmission.

Like I said, I was looking into purchasing a Warmoth fat Strat body.

Here are some routing options.

That, fake hood scoops and "Do It Yourself" T-Top Kits from K Mart (which would remove the load-bearing tendencies from the roof yet failed to include frame strengthening supports for the undercarriage, resulting in your car folding up like an accordion when you drove over railroad tracks) were a charming delight as well.

Done and done.
My dad and I have narrowed the build down to one of two guitars. The Bumblebee or the VH1 Frankie... I kinda want the VH1 more.

We've built a lot of things together. Model planes for grandpa, fireworks displays for the friends, and all sorts of things. He was said to have built a Flying V back in the day with his best friend, so I don't know. We're both very patient. We can do the guitar it in a summer I think. My dad and I don't always get along and he has a very short temper, but I think something like this will be great for our father son bonding.

Well the first thing you are going to need is a fresh corpse. How you steal one from the country morgue is up to you and then you need to murder someone for the fresh heart and brain. Then you need a bunch of cool looking lab equipment, a kite, and a big ass electrical storm.

Too funny! XD
and an "abbey" normal brain
Elvis is correct: newer Squiers especially from China are an eighth-inch thinner than standard.
They can be used, but I don't like the radius on the edges, the Chinese strats and Indonesian ones have shit parts, and there are some runs that are proper 1-3/4" inch thick.. but that's splitting hairs.
When I was younger the only way I could tell strats apart was to spend alot of time looking at the real thing in shops, to become familliar. There's a reason why the thicker bodies are preferred over the thinner ones.
Other strats that are proper thickness are Mexico, Japan and some Korean from the year I posted.
Having owned many Strats, Elvis does know a thing or two about what he's talking about. Also he’s proved this on many occasions .
On the flip side of the coin we have you Gary - you've managed to successfully produced evidence of owning nothing, and also managed to show yourself as being nothing more than a lying fake who's only talent is that of being a connoisseur of Google.
Diamondjimi (07-04-2010),jhale667 (07-07-2010)
I myself have managed to play quite a few Strats at Sam Ash, and a couple buddies of mine own one or two so i've played quite a few!
My Dad and I are going to bum each other in the bath later ... I hope i satisfy his needs ...he will probably beat me later.
Hopefully my brother will want sloppy seconds.

"Verbie"?
He refers to Reverberator in pet-name form, like he wishes an irrigation also.
DJ, just go find your own dad. Or make a new M4M ad on Kijiji singles or something.
Strats are strange guitars. A good one is WONDERFUL and a bad one is really bad. You won't even have to plug it in to know if you have a winner or a loser. A good Strat resonates and several factors come into play. My best resonating Strat is the three screw plate 72 Strat with thick polyester finish. Yeah I know, the three screw neck and polyester finish is supposed to kill tone but not on this one. I've also played Strats that have all the by the book tone enhancing features that are dead as a doornail tone wise. I don't know what it is but Strats are weird this way. Find a good one and leave it the hell alone. My best one is dead bone stock.
Just like any axe.....you can have 2 straight off the assembly line, one after the other, one will suck fucking ass as far as tone, the next one will be the most amazing thing you ever heard.
Pearly Gates (Billy Gibbons' Les Paul) is a perfect example of incredible tone (yeah I know, not a Strat, but what the hell). Stevie Ray Vaughan's Strat had killer tone that was the very definition of what a Strat should sound like.
