Ed Speaks! New Guitar World Magazine!

Ed is interviewed in the new Guitar World.
In it he stresses a point that I've tried to make with the people who despise his tone and playing in the new tune AND at the dress rehearsal.

    Here's the caption:

As for people who think IAT isn't structured correctly , Ed's explanation can be summed up in this quote........

" I get easily bored playing the same thing, so I have given myself the freedom to change and play variations within the context of a song . Who made the rule that you have to play the same rythem part under every verse ? I'm not afraid to fall on my face . I think my ability has grown tenfold over what was on our early records , and it's because I care so much . I care so much that I don't care . It means so much to me that I allow myself to fail !"

    C'mon guys....Even dave says, "Ed dosesn't suck...he just made a mistake."

I'm sorry. I'm not biased to take an Ed or Dave side. I love 'em both. They gave us some mother fucking great music...

    What is...WILL be...

I'll see Eddie with Sam, just as I'd see Dave with an unknown guitarist. I'd never pick and choose.

Give me some slack for being honest...
I like to pay close attention to the things I'll forget later...

Ed doesn't suck. He just lost his compass. And Sammy is a piss-poor, soggy roadmap of a replacement.

Ed figures if he tells the world how much of a better guitarist he is now than he was then, maybe a fair # of people will by it.

I love Ed and I love Dave. I don't hate anyone who approves of one and not the other...

    Personally, I can't be biased.

Have no problems with Ed "evolving".

Just that what he came up with after Roth left the band.........about 95% has done nothing for me. Hasn't moved me at all. Not even talking about vocals here.

Ed used to complain about how he didn't have control when Roth was in the band, and Templeman used to produce them. Well, maybe that's what he needs. Take a listen to VH3. Just a mess. Production was of a demo-quality, song ideas were half-formed.

When Ed's at the helm, he gets lazy. Nobody to kick him up the ass, or even stand there with arms folded, unimpressed, as much as saying "You can do better than that."

"allowing myself to fail"? Sounds like excuses to me.

Maybe Ed's just not capable of producing music that elicits anything more than a wistful nostalgia to what once was, a rememberances of the days when he kicked ass. And maybe those days passing when Roth left the band were nothing more than a coincidence, and Dave splitting had little to do with Ed starting to phone it in.

Exactly. Anyone with his talent would not wait 6 years to release material which even then. is substandard unless he desperately needed someone to kick his ass and motivate him to get himself in gear.

Dave did that for Eddie - Sammy simply can't.

Sounds like Ed trying to make excuses in case the record bombs, which it will.

Well, I can tell all of you...

...as a guy who's been playing professionally or semi-so for the last 25 years, I know beyond any shadow of a doubt Eddie Van Halen can still play, and play better than just about anyone.

He just doesn't care right now. That's the bottom line. In his mind, there's nothing left for him to prove, no mountain to climb, no push to his pull. In other words, he is BORED.

That's why the songs with DLR on the Hits package were so good. There is a chemistry between those two that just works. DLR brings out the ed-ge in Ed-die. Always has. With Hagar, Eddie is simply going through the motions.

Pride won't let Eddie allow DLR back into the fold. Boredom won't all Eddie to play with any fire. He'll stay bored until his pride allows him to do what he knows deep deep down inside he should do. And until that happens, we will all keep wondering what's wrong with him.

Van Halen should bring MeatLoaf back to front the band. Perfect talent mix for them currently.

Drowning victims will drag you down too in despiration.

Roth?........He's the master....What he is doing is justtttttttt perfect. In my 27 years of following this guy, he never ceases to amaze me. FLOL!!!!

In the old days Ed's playing style was bluesy and that complemented Dave's voice. He took a departure from that when he teamed up with Hagar. Since then Van Halen sounds as a mediocre plain ordinary rockband with no soul and an irritating screamer as a vocalist.

when we saw Dave in late '99 at The Silo in Reading, PA, all of us in the crowd started chanting "Eddie sucks! Eddie sucks" during Bart Walsh's guitar solo. Dave kinda silenced us down and said, "Aw, c'mon now...Eddie doesn't suck. He just stands there. It's Gary that sucks!" We all hit the floor laughing...absolutely hilarious!!
