Indianapolis 1984 and the 1982 Maryland Capitol Center show are both good. A good ealy show is the 1978 Englad show.

Check out "Listen to this, Eddie!" or "Martial Law". Another good one is "Home Ground", but 81 bootlegs are either hit or miss

There are several bootlegs in the history of Van Halen bootlegs, that sound professionally recorded when they are no such thing... Van Halen could make a fortune off of a few bootlegs, i'm sure if a remastered edition of a London 78 show or, say, Fresno 79 recording, was to be released officially, it would fare well

I'm firmly convinced the full show existed at one time, I think the credits at the end of Unchained are a pretty clear indication, you just don't put credits like that on filming a few singular songs....

But I have a feeling that since it was nearly 30 years ago now, it's probably in some warehouse and unusable by now...

At one time, that "warehouse" was a company called Pacific Title. You can click on and view some records that supposedly document the footage shot between 1980 and 1984 that was stored there at this link: Pacific Titles Archives List

Quebec 84 is a great 84 show to have... they did Summertime Blues, which they never played at any other 84 shows before or after...

Most of the 80/81 boots sound like shit with the exception of a handful... check out vhboots.com for a little more info.

On top of that, some nitwit is blowing some sort of horn through more than half of the show. While not quite as annoying as those insipid vuvuzela horns during the World Cup, it still gets really old after even a few minutes.

Full Moon, Fair Warning is a great sounding '81 boot. It's the same show as Listen Up Eddie, but it's the complete show, whereas LUE isn't. Want me to burn ya a copy? PM me if you do. (Also, anyone that's interested.)

Anyway, staying back on topic... I'd have to say the best sounding FW tour show would have to be Home Ground... At least it's the best i've heard. There are some VERY good 1982 shows. Largo, for example, is a must have... You can find the audio rip on GH101, or if someone wants me to upload it, i'll do it. Another one is Where Did All The Good Times Go? That, or Everybody Wants a Virgin. All MUST-haves. I'm welcome to upload anything, I have a lot of bootlegs.

I've never heard of it, that could contribute to it...

EDIT: Oh wait, yes I have, it's the two San Diego shows from 1984. I have both. They're quite good

Home Ground is great. but most versions play faster than the actual speed they played at the time.
so I fixed the speed when I made the CD from my HG vinyl. and there's little noise on my version.

I don't have a fast enough connection to upload the show. PM me with your address, and I'll send you a copy.

i've already posted a verified 2nd gen audience boot of the 2nd night.
i got it from lou over at ddlr.
as for the best 1984 boot, quebec city.
they played "summertime blues" and "ice cream man" only on that show.
also, san francisco 1982 is a killer boot.
they play "d.o.a." and it is from a radio broadcast.
providence, RI 1981 is an awesome fucking show.
    tour opener.
they play a cover of little richard's "lucille".
milwaukee 1980 is a great show.
dave mentions about a "tour movie" they are making.

fresno 1979 is the opening show of the "vh2 world vacation tour" and it fucking kicks major ass!
fresno 1978 and hammersmith odeon 1978 are lethally killer boots!

That being said, 81 tour bootlegs are still hit or miss

You could say the same for almost all audience recordings, right up until the early nineties. Outside of soundboard tapes, some guy standing in the audience surrounded by screaming fans, using a tape recorder most likely bought at K Mart or a drug store had some fairly weak chances of capturing a show with any fidelity.

Yes, but be very careful which of the 3 or so versions you get, man. My copy (London Invasion) is apparently copied from vinyl, and the source tapes for it were way too slow, so it wound up playing faster than normal when it was transferred. And for some reason, "YRGM" is missing from it.

  38. Thanked chefcraig for this KICKASS post:

That sucks, I will be wary of that.

California Calling is another clear sounding boot, but of course it is from the video of the US Festival, and not one of Van Halen's better performances since they were all shitfaced drunk!

I thought they performed pretty good. Definitely shitfaced but they put on a great show... Except for Dave. His timeless words in Romeo Delight fail to leave my mind: "I FORGOT THE FUCKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN' WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORDS!"
