As far as I can see, Edward Van Halen is finished

Is it just me or does Eddie look 100 percent finished as a performer and a human? Can anyone give me any evidence that this guy is capable of pulling off this tour convincingly? Musically, physically and socially he just doesn't seem to have what it takes any more. I'm thinking he's going to make a total fool of himself on this tour; the music industry will never touch him again if this goes as badly as it seems to be going.

Who would've thought the 'where are they now?' bit at the end of the Hot For Teacher video with Edward locked in a mental institute and a strait jacket would've come so true?

It sucks. We need EVH if we ever want the real Van Halen back again.

It was Dave fortelling the future, since he basically directed the video.

Guys, knocking Ed doesn't accomplish our goal of having Dave back at the mic.

I have no hope of Van Halen reuniting, so I'll knock the four stooges.

I think the bottle of "never" emptied after the 1996 and 2000 events.

When you talk about 50 year old rock stars, never say never is not a good phrase to use.

True...but in any case, Dave & Eddie don't hate each other. Even Val Bertinelli has said that even through all the shit Dave & Ed have said about one another, Ed still has a "liking" for Dave that she doesn't even understand.

    Call me a realist.

Dave said he wasn't going to go back up to Howdy Doody Mountain without a lawyer and a valium.

Once the lawyers get involved, it'll cause a mess, and the reunion will never happen. Dave will demand his royaltees, like he should, and Ed will back off.

I'd just assume Dave do another rock album at this point.

I've always said that the current line-up should give Dave a real fucking creative kick in the ass. He should make an aggressive album a la "Fair Warning."

He's proven he still has the "chops." Otherwise, he and Ed would not have worked together again in 1996 AND 2000.

Even though Ed says it was the Lawyers that fucked it up, I don't necessarily believe it. Maybe he was just being kind and not wanting to say what REALLY happened.

These same fucking "Lawyers" would have been involved in the Sammy reunion as well.

And I know what you'll say, "Sammy was just willing to sell his soul to be in Van Halen." And you probably wouldn't be far off base. But everybody wants fucking money. Everybody wants what's owed to them. As money hungry as Sammy is, I don't think he'd back off and take a pay cut. No one is that stupid.

Perhaps ex-management wanted a piece of the Dave reunion, which would certainly gather more attention and cash flow than this disgrace at 5150.

You may be right. But take it from a fan of both eras. I'm not paying money to see Sammy. I'm paying to see Eddie. Even though the Hagar music will never stand the test of time, no single musician has changed music the way Ed has. I respect that.

I also respect that he feels he doesn't owe anybody anything.

True, as fans, we feel like we're the boss paying his salary and we should get what we want. But unfortunately, right now for one reason or another, he can't give it to us, and it's a shame...but it's life.

If ya hate Van Hagar, don't go to the shows, or purchase the music. These threads won't accomplish anything, but empty seats and sub par album sales WILL.

On one hand, I idolize Ed. He's great. On the other hand, like you, I wanna see Dave in the band and I feel like if I buy a ticket, I'm contributing to that dream never happening...and on the third hand, I think, "What if it never happens?" And I miss a chance to see a musician that I have admired for 23 years all for nothing.

    Know what I mean?

I'm not going to purchase the new best of, or go to the shows. I would've done both if Dave were in the band.

It makes me sad. It's just rock n roll, but it's sad.

I think it's pretty futile to hope for a Van Halen reunion at this stage. I just don't think Edward has the mental or physical faculties to fulfil the duties required of him being in a band anymore.

There is more chance of Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix going on tour than Dave getting back in Van Halen.

    It's depressing.

Yeah. I actually felt good to read that from Valerie. I know the guys have their differences, but I'd hate to think they actually loathe one another.

Her quote was something like, "Even after everything that's happened within the band, Ed still has a warm spot in his heart for Dave. He handles it better than I would. He's a nicer person than I am, I guess."

That's not word for word. It's just how I remember the quote.

I think it might work. But it might end up being contrived.

I have a friend of mine who I only see every couple of years. Like Dave, his personality is high octane. Definitely much more in your face than I could ever be. I love the guy, but I can only be around him in small doses. When we hang out, everything's cool. We get along great. And I laugh at his many one liners...but in the end, it's all about small doses.

I could never hang with him every night.

Perhaps that's how it is with Ed when it comes to Dave...

Perhaps...but really, you could do an album and never hardly see each other.

I don't buy the 'we can't work together' line.

Maybe they're both being smart and not taking that route. They know that we, the fans would see it as contrived if they're not really working together and only meeting up on stage...

I wouldn't say Ed is finished. More like rust never sleeps and w/ close to 5 years of down time he's got some rust working. I would expect to see his chops return as this tour progresses.

I agree, but it seems to be the truth, not a sarcastic remark.

In all seriousness, Eddie doesn't look healthy.

For this instant on the Eddie issue and his appearance, I'm going to choose to live in denial for awhile.

    Jesus I'm such a poet.
