As far as the US is concerned, your biggest downfall economically is states lobbying to protect industries where the have no global advantage.
This lost opportunity cost is multiplied by each state doing the same as everyone protects their back yard.
If the states actually put their resources into other areas, the US would be a perpetual world leader economically.
