Redskins running back Portis sidelined for the season

Nov 24 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON, DC - Twice Pro Bowler Clinton Portis of the Washington Redskins was ruled out for the rest of the NFL season on Wednesday after being placed on injured reserve.

The 29-year-old, Washington’s primary running back since 2004, had already missed five games with a torn left groin before suffering an abdominal injury during Sunday’s 19-16 win over the Tennessee Titans.

"He’ll have to have surgery in that area," Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan told reporters. "It’ll be a couple of months before he can get back."

It is the second season in a row for Portis to be placed on injured reserve, and the third time in the last five years.

In 2006, he was sidelined by hand and shoulder injuries while last year he was ruled out after being severely concussed.

"(It) really is disappointing because he has worked so hard to get to where he was at," Shanahan said of a player who needs 77 yards to reach 10,000 for his career.

"He’s encouraging all the other players and he’s a big part of this football team. You hate to see a person work that hard and not get an opportunity to finish the season."

Christ, this Lions team is difficult to watch. After Dion Branch burned the same Detroit safety for a 3rd touchdown, CBS had the camera focused on coach Schwartz as he clearly said "What the fuck just happened?" Naturally, Phil Simms (never one to miss the opportunity to state the seemingly obvious) felt the need to call attention to the remark by pointing it out.

saw it coming...Pats are good at adjusting in the second half and, somehow, the Lions always manage to self destruct....(kinda like the Bengals)....
