For Van Halen its pretty simple - I use a marshall plexi 50w modded by David Bray with pres, bass, mid and treble on about 3 0'clock settings - gain on full, PPI master volume down low around 0.5, the MXR flanger and phase90 where needed and a Boss RE20 space echo set to slapback delay in the loop. I also use an MXR 10 band EQ pedal at low volume with lower output pickups sometimes to drive the amp a bit harder. Its hard to get Ed's crunch and sustain at lower volumes. The destroyer and VH1 guitars have Seymour Duncan Distortion pickups, the 5150 and 2007 SD custom custom and the OLP a dimarzio tonezone. On the studio I have the left guitar basically dry with a hint of 10ms delay and the right is wet plate reverb maybe about 2sec in size.

Im certainly not a Van Halen note for note guy and there's not much more I can do about the tone without playing full volume, using a variac and echoplex tape echo but its always challenging and good fun to play Van Halen songs! Cheers

    XLNT~!!

    Well. Done. Welcome aboard!

Finally, a guy comes in out of the blue to show some of these shit-talkers how it's done.

I have no questions except: your choice of speakers. I listened to the I'm The One clip and on the laptop speakers I can't hear aside from the VH track what you're using.

And do you like what you got, or what DO you like? Obviously you're pretty dialed in if you got the reissue head with a Bray mod, but tell us about your speakers and what you think about em?

    Hey thanks for the welcome!

For these clips I was using the 4x12 which is loaded with chinese re-issue greenbacks. Great cab for old school rock. For heavier stuff I use the Elmwood with a little 2x12 (to the left in the videos) with celestion G75 and V30 mix. I also have a JSX. The Elmwood also sounds good through the greenbacks except at high volume where it looses crunch. To be honest I dont know much about speakers and Im currently living overseas in China so the only speakers I have been able to find locally are celestion re-issues. I really dont have much to compare with.

I'll try post up the Im The One mp3 tonight (the audio) which is higher quality. Here's You Really Got Me MP3 at higher resolution. Its also using the same setup (greenbacks) but also using the MXR 10 band EQ in front: http://www.mp3lizard.com/download.cfm?id=27396

I cannot ignore the fact his ear is alot like mine, based on his choice in speakers is nearly identical to my choices: I have basically, a mix of greenbacks for dirty channel amps and V30's / G12T-75's in X-pattern for clean channel amps.

When I say "a mix" what I mean is, a couple cabs with UK-made G12m-25's (75hz) mixed with blackback G12H-30 (55hz bass blackbacks). That's my optimum favorite choice, in X-pattern but I only have 2 cabs like that, because original greens and blacks are SO hard to come by. My other 2 cabs are reissue greenbacks, four from 92 and four from 94. If I could find another set of G12H-30 (55hz) blackbacks from mid-to-late 70's, I'd split them between those 2 cabs as well and yank a pair of 25's each. But I havent' seen reasonable price used yet...

One thing Paul, I don't post pics or soundpage links of my gear or what I'm doing - so I've earned a disreputation from a few jealous hobbyists like Jay here begging me to do so. I enjoy discussing gear and asking advise but like to reserve SOME of my secrets for myself. That's just the way it is with me.

The only thing anyone's ever "begged" you to do is GO DIE IN A FIRE.

He doesn't post links because he CAN'T Paul. He can't play, "gave up" like the wuss he is decades ago.

LMAO @ the "jealous hobbyist" bit - which name players have YOU teched for again, GARfail? How many respect YOU as a player? Oh, that's right - NONE and NO ONE. Idiot.

Fact is, Paul - douche-boy here, just to clarify for you - squats under the 405, posts from libraries in Alhambra and exists only to troll.

Stop shitting up threads or your posts will be getting moved again, GAyR. Last warning.

Betting Paul's already getting the idea you're the site douche, though...congrats on showing him that within 2 posts.

But now that we've brought you up to speed on the resident troll asshat - please tell us more about your Elmwood amp, Paul!

Also, another technical question or two - what kind of necks and bodies are you using for the custom builds? Any favorite woods for the bodies, or just whatever's available?

Every word is true, Paul. GARfail is the Army's resident floating turd in our toilet and will continue to offer useless advice he invents of culls from Google or Wikipedia.
I'm shocked he didn't go off on you about Chinese Celestions or beg you for their serial numbers...

Paul, I know my own gear inside and out, all of it but this guy DJ doesn't.. the point of his thread is he posts for ego but not for advise, nor to advise.

What I like to do is share some of the things I know but you can't gooogle, and hear from folks what they've experimented with.

And so what about Chinese Celestions: I think the 70/80's suck dick, don't like the G12S-50s, the G12L-35s they stick in the Fenders.. but I like ALOT the Chinese Greenbacks, and the G12T75's I've heard, and I actually have a backup quad set of Chinese Vintage 30s I yanked from a cheap used cab.. I think those 3 versions are superb and can't knock 'em once they're broken in.

You have an imaginary warehouse FULL of gear, SausageGARgler.

You share nothing but unsolicited, rambling horseshit.

You offer nothing of your own because the only piece of gear you own is a 1987 Charvette with stickers on the back spelling out "Fuck Off"

Wink No one will disagree. It's what's referred to as a "consensus opinion".

Man its a badass amp but currently the powertubes need replacing so Im not using it much. Ive found it a difficult amp to record with. Its sounds killer in the room and on live recordings and then I mic it up at home and it sounds all muddy. Its voiced lower mids and can be quite boomy in the bass (like Bogners) so I have to watch that. I need to fiddle around with it more at home and do some better demo's. Its got its own unique tone and is extremely versatile while being very simple. Its 2 channels but is set up so it behaves like a 4 channel amp and has great dual master volumes for solo boosts. Visit the Elmwood website and listen to FlyAngus's clips. He's recorded it well. Very awesome. EVH should be using amps like this.

The 5150 and '2007' are basswood, the destroyer is mahoghany and I have no idea on the VH1 guitar - that body is actually from a fake chinese strat. It may not even be wood The VH1 is a meanstreets neck I think and is really nice. The destroyer turned out really well. It even has yellow fret dots!!
