    A roth radio related request

anyone remember, when I believe it was "fuckhowardstern" called into Roth live on air and asked if Joe Thunder was involved in writing "Take Your Whiskey Home" and Dave said what we all knew was true?

I never got to hear it live as I was in class at the time and couldn't even think to begin to search for it, but was curious if anyone knew where it was and could possibly send it here?
Still waiting for a relevant Browns Team

Yes, it is true: Joe Thunder did indeed contribute lyrics to "Take Your Whiskey Home" but it was mostly the oohs and maybe one "aah."

According to Joe's profile age of 37 years old, he would have been only 3 or 4 years old in 1977. So, as prolific and academically engrossed in the maneuvering of words and phrases with tunes as he is known for today - I seriously doubt he wrote the whole song.

Actually, "Take Your Whiskey Home" is one of Van Halen's oldest songs. It first appeared on that Cherokee Studios demo that they recorded back in 73 or 74 when Mark Stone was still the bass player.

Jose Thunder was still in his XXX size Pampers in those days.

Here's the original demo, in case anyone out there has never heard it. And never mind how it's erroneously labeled on YouTube, this is NOT from the WACF sessions......

Never heard of it. Wasn't aware there was such a thing as a Mammoth/Van Halen tape from 1972, since at that point there was probably only the "Broken Combs" (Eddie & Alex's band) and the Red Ball Jets (Dave's first band). If any tapes exist of either of those bands, I've never heard of them.

In any case, it's hard to imagine the mighty Van Halen, even in its infancy as a band, playing a room like this.....

The earliest studio stuff I've come across were the 1974 demo recordings (that may or may have not featured Mark Stone). Live-wise would be the dreadful Gazzari's recording from that same year. See VH TRADING or VH BOOTS.

There was an earlier recording that showed up on ebay in like 2004. Claimed to be the first ever recording. It didn't sell and as far as I know has never resurfaced. I may still have the info on it somewhere. If I recall correctly it was a set of reel to reel tapes.

Mike mentioned at one of his Cinco de Mayo parties at Peppers several years ago he has a number of early (pre-VH) recordings preserved in his vault. He also collects VH boots.

Funny how it's the guy who never wrote a anything for the band (excluding his one note intro for RWTD) is the biggest collector of the 4...

Why so odd..? Over the course of an excellent 30+ year career most folks keep a few momentos around. To you he may be a footnote... for him it was his life.

No, I personally don't think Mike was a footnote as a key ingredient of the classic VH sound.
But in the context of writing? Yes.

The bands used to setup and play outside, there's pics of them on the steps on the browseweb.

But on this date, it was a cover-tunes dance and those seats weren't there.
