Improving "Diamond Dave" album & "David Lee Roth's No Holds Bar-B-Que"

Not that I don't love that album because it's DLR and I love anything he does, but it's definitely my least favorite and I'm sure many can agree, and it's definitely because of the cover song choices. Even the song choices for "CFTH" were much better of course. Aside from his version of "Shoo Bop," I don't think any of the other choices were good at all for him doing covers. I think it would have been much better if the track listing was like this:

    1. Look at All the People Here Tonite!
    2. Thug Pop
    3. Shoo Bop
    4. Living in America
    5. Stay While the Night Is Young
    6. Baker Street
    7. When It’s Love Time
    8. Shine a Little Bit More
    9. Lido Shuffle
    10. Tin Cup Chalice
    11. Flex
    12. “How About a Little Fire” Scarecrow?
    13. Bad Habits
    14. Ice Cream Man

Yeah, "LAATPHT" is a novelty tune, but would've been a cool way to open the album. "Thug Pop" is superb, no doubt, and I kept "Stay While the Night Is Young" of all 27 Savoy Brown songs he used on that album. The others were ones he did in the past (Bar-B-Que, Radio Rodeo, web site, etc.) that I thought were great fits for him, like a "California Girls" or "Gigolo"--especially "Living in America." And I always thought "Flex" and "Scarecrow (would have to be full verison we never heard of course)" were killer, even though techno Dave. Might as well keep the bonus track too.

Also, I think the No Holds Bar-B-Que would have been WAY better if he would have condensed it. Some people think his work on that is stupid, I think it's brilliant and hilarious--just too long. I think if he condensed each scene and made them like commercials inbetween live songs, that would have been maybe the best home video ever (since he's never released live songs). That, and actually sell it as a DVD in stores, not VHS at his concerts.

    Meh.

Would have just as soon seen the bulk of the Diamond Dave album left on the scrapheap, myself. He had such a cool band at that point backing him live, and much of what they brought to the table was just wasted on the Diamond Dave album mostly due to the song selection.

I got a lot more enjoyment out of the Bar-B-Que stuff than the DD cd.

    "Diamond Dave" was a misfire.

Roth's logic was that by putting classic cover tunes on it, he stood a better chance of getting more airplay than the all-original material DLR Band cd did.

Didn't exactly see a stampede of people on Roth-related sites when DD was released posting how great it was.

Diamond Dave was Roth's attempt to put obscure cover songs on it by his favorite acts instead of covering the mainstream, played out shit. I actually liked his logic and it was more of something to just keep his name out there while the VH camp kept spinning their wheels. Too bad DLR never recorded vocals on the Hideous Sun Demons album. Oh, what could have been...

In some ways, it felt like a lot of what Roth did from 1997 to 2006 were things designed just to keep busy (with a lack of extended, longterm purpose for any single endeavor) until the Van Halens woke up. Which isn't to say I didn't enjoy quite a few of the sidebars he made during this period...although the Diamond Dave cd wasn't one of them.

The DD music was just flat. No life, no energy. It was like he tried to recapture Crazy from the Heat, but without the "heat".

I listened to this cd a couple weeks ago for the first time since I bought it and thought it was a fun listen, I thought it sucked the first time I listened too it !! Some things can grow on you. It was a mistake for Dave not to follow up the DLR Band disc with more original stuff, but hey that's Dave !! He does what the hell he want's.

that was one of my best decisons of buying No Holds Barb at one of his concerts. Where else would I have found it.
I would have loved to have Love Time, Flex, and Chalice on the album as well.
Is Love Time a cover? Chalice was a Buffett song and I'm sure Jimmy wanted way too much to allow him to cover it.

I dunno, I LIKE Diamond Dave a LOT. The only way it could be improved would be to make it a compilation of ALL the stuff Dave recorded over the years, every cover, every experiment, etc.

    Cheers! :bottle:

I didn't like the DD cd much, Dave did in 2002 a couple of (Rodeo) radio shows to promote the Sam & Dave tour where they played some VH and DLR songs
unplugged/accoustic. Maybe it was better to put that on cd instead of DD. Dave acted also like a stand-up comedian during those shows, got 3 or 4 shows of it and I love those. Also funny to hear songs like Jump,Dance the night away, Mean street, And the craddle will rock etc 'naked'. (in front of you're steamin'eyes and ears)

Dave made Diamond Dave because Nile Rodgers gave him $500,000 just to record anything and put out a cd.

    This was a money grab.

Still, it has some good performances on it.

Nile Rodgers was associated with YFLM and Diamond Dave. He is the KOD.
