Talking to people work big shows, standard practice these days is to have a backing track running in time from the desk and then fade it in as required. So a singer may mime the high parts or whatever. For example if Michael Jackson hadn't died he was planning to sing just 15 minutes out of his show and mime the rest.

The first two Def Leppard albums were their best work. Pyromania and Hysteria were total shite (intentional misspelling with a word commonly used in the DUMP)!
