Chris Farley & Adam Sandler skit on SNL

Watching VH-1 SNL tribute for Chris Farley. Him and Sandler do a skit where they throw a pool party but it's all dudes. I remember when this first aired Van Halen's Beautiful Girls was playing in the background but seeing it again just now just some random rock instrumental.

Does anyone know the history behind this? Did Ed tell them to cease and desist?

probably no cease and desist. more likely changing the music to something generic avoids paying royalties and performance fees every time it airs, or for every DVD sold.

Yeah, they stripped the Van Halen music out of this clip right around the same time Eddie was threatening to sue anyone on the planet who used red, white, or black stripes on anything. Or who knows, maybe he was actually offended by the implication that he endorsed a fictional brand of "gay beer", as ridiculous as that would be.

Adam Sandler's definitely a fan of the REAL Van Halen, and he tries to work a mention of them into damn near everything he does. The VH shirt/breakup joke in "The Wedding Singer". "David Lee Roth lights the Menorah" in the Hanukkah Song, etc.

Yep. Due to music licensing, tv shows that have extensive musical soundtracks are either never released on DVD, like The Wonder Years, or are drastically edited with new music, such as WKRP In Cincinnati. In the case of the latter, it would have been better not to release the set at all, as the new music simply does not fit, and in some cases ruins punch lines that actually depend on a specific tune.

I remember when I rented "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" on VHS back in the early 90's. Couldn't believe how horribly it was butchered with all the music from the soundtrack removed. Thankfully by the time they put out the DVD it was restored to the original soundtrack. (Yeah, the Hagar song is still cheesy as Hell, but the movie's just not the same with the cheesy placeholder music.

Eddie's reluctance to let VH music be out there was why I was so surprised to hear it in the SuperBad movie a few years back. That commercial was running non-stop for like 3 weeks.

    PANAMA!!!!

on the adbreaks for the V8 supercars here, the network often plays 5 second grabs of hft, panama, unchained, other cvh. satch and vai and ozzy too.

NEVER any van hagar. isn't there a time limit thingy where if you play under 20 secs or whatever, the copyright onus doesn't happen?

    shark?

And there was "Everybody Wants Some" in ZombieLand. And "Dance The Night Away" in Sandler's last movie Grown Ups. Apparently Janie must have reminded Eddie what the word "publicity" meant. At least as far as the old music goes......

There is also a stoner movie involving a group of kids looking for a mythic giant pot farm that shows up on Comedy Central every few months, loaded with VH tunes. Naturally, I can't remember the name of it...

EDIT: The movie is called Rolling Kansas. It has a bunch of VH, but none on the soundtrack album.

Are there VH songs played during the movie, or just VH references like the guy's t-shirt?
