THEE pedal every guitarist should own!

The Electro Harmonix Magnum 44 power amp pedal.

The new 44 Magnum guitar amp head provides 44 watts of clean and natural power but can also deliver a true amplifier overdrive at the turn of a knob. From your pocket to the stage, the 44 Magnum is the perfect gigging and practice solution. Despite being described as a “guitar head” the 44 has the character and control to work with any electric instrument. Flip the brightness switch for a more defined top end. The sweet tone of our legendary 22 Caliber but with an extra power edge that can make a difference.

    Quick Specs
-44 watts of power into 8 or 16 ohms
-Tone switch toggles between a neutral, flat setting and a Musical top end boost
    -Maximum headroom potential
-Can be driven to a natural, true amplifier saturation
-Fits in the palm of your hand
-Comes with a 24DC-3000 power supply

Fuckin A. I'm getting one of these. This thing can save the gig.
I believe they're in the $150 range. Money well spent.

So... this powers your speakers instead of your amp head? Am I getting this correct? Would anyone actually use this in a gig/recording situation? Do you use a speaker cable to run it into a cab?

I'm not exactly following the use of this gizmo, either. From the clips, I've gathered that this is essentially an amp in a cigarette pack. OK, swell. When I was a kid, I had a Sears Silvertone amp that had volume and tone controls only. To get distortion, I'd run my guitar first through a reel to reel tape recorder, then on to the amp. This did not change the overall output of the amp at all, so I'm confused as to why you would use this thing, particularly when amps of today have all sorts of effects already built in. So to again ask VAiN's question, what is the deal? Do you simply hook it up to your speaker cabinet, and if so, why? What happens to your other effects, such as reverb and tone? Do these effects now become predicated on your guitar's volume/tone controls, and again, what of the reverb/depth?

You can run these direct or through an amp. They work best through a clean power amp. So these are preamps instead of a whole amp like the 44 magnum but they sound fantastic.

I'm failing to see why you would want this for $150 instead of a Line 6 Pod.

When your amp head doesn't work anymore during a gig but your cab does, you can use this as a plan B power amp...

And with PA systems being what they are, for plan B you just run the guitar sound through your monitors and crank it up to get however much volume you need.

Keep one of these in your gig bag. It's $150 well spent if you amp goes for a shit mid-gig.

In all my years of gigging. I've learned to never rely on a soundman for shit. Ya gotta take care of #1 and be completely self reliant... (but that's just me)

They make amazing stuff. I have a SansAmp Triaxis (preamp pedal). 3 channels to set as you like.
Combining that with the 44 Magnum would be perfect if you wanna travel light for a gig. Or the ultimate backup rig.

I also use a Tech 21 PSA 1 in my main rig. Wouldn't trade it for anything out there...

All I need is my ProCo Rat distortion pedal. THAT is THE pedal every guitarist should own.

    So that's all I need.

Well, and my MXR M-104 Distortion +.

But those two are ALL I need!

Well, along with my MXR M-101 phase 90, my Boss PH-3 phase shifter and my Boss DD-3 digital delay.

But those pedals are ALL I need!

Now if I only had a guitar...

A line 6 Pod is just a digital recording of an amp. Crank one up at stage volume. They sound like shit. The Tech 21 stuff is all analog. It doesn't cut your tone up.

Yup. I got a Tech 21 PSA 1.1 in my rack and 1000 watt power amp. Just give me the right speakers and I can run anything.

I can drive whatever the fuck I want. Bass cabs, guitar cabs, PA cabs, use big PA cabs for bass. I can run microphones, keyboards, guitars, basses and even fucking electric violins with my rack case. very loudly I may add.

I can drive 4 ohms of bass at a 1000 watts all day long in 100 degree heat and it will never shut down. It's a sledge hammer!

Oh I agree cuntpletely. I mean, if you have 44 watts, that is fairly loud, I just meant for some additional volume from the front. You can always crouch down by the speaker cab that is being powered by that thing if you have trouble hearing yourself over everything else. I have trouble hearing myself because being as tall as I am, any amp on the floor just blows the sound by my knees. So I have to have my cabs on top of a road case or something. Pat Travers always ran his guitar through a floor wedge in front of him back in the day.

Ya know, I've been wanting to load a pair of Celestions into a pair of wedges for a long time. Had the rare instance a few years back where we did actually have a soundman who knew what the fuck he was doing.
He asked me to drop my stage level a bit and said he'd balance it all out by running me through the wedge in front of me. Fuck, once he got the level right , it sounded like I was in the perfect sound bubble. Incredible!

They look kind of gay but when you try in ear monitors, you are hooked. I noticed RUSH uses them now.

My problem is we play on small stages and the drum cymbals drown out the singer, eat my right ear up and yes, my sound is on the floor as well. If I stack my cabs I can blast myself but it makes hearing the rest of the band worse. Plus, I switch between bass and guitar and that opens up a whole new mess of monitoring problems. Now I use in ear monitors and with the bass I run my SansAmp direct to the board. I'm still using a 5150 II half stack for the guitar.
