    Cool Oh happy day...

Found an old backup file set for the recording drive that failed today; certainly better than nothing, and saves me $500-1000 on data recovery fees. Only lost 6 of 18 or so tunes, which since I had the day off I already recreated the PT sessions for them, just have to retrack them, mainly the two out of those I wanted to work on most first... once that was done I started re-beefing the rhythms for "Angry Girl", slapped some place-keeper drums on it, had a few beers and took another pass at the lead...

for years i've wanted to record a kickass version of 'kashmir'... so here's us rehearsing it today. we ended up recording the entire drum track, now we're gonna put a heap of guitars on it, the bass track, then my mate in new york is gonna add keyboard and strings. then i'm gonna get another local dude to sing it.

i know it'll turn out great! i love the song, but we'll never play it live.

thanks man, we ran through the whole thing (all 9 minutes of it!) about 5 times..

it's actually a pretty complex arrangement, but dave grohl there nailed it in the end.

It's really odd how easy that song is to play when you are alone, sitting on the edge of your bed, yet so difficult when you try to play it as a group. Oddly enough, I recall Public Image once doing a cover of it, with Robert Plant relating a hilarious story regarding John Lyndon (Johnny Rotten) calling him up to get the words right.

agree, craig. we found the transitions tricky; even though there's really only 4 parts to it, to get it to flow smoothly from one to the next took a bit of work. so for a while, we just practised changing from section to section. then we sat down and wrote a chart for it, stuck it up on the wall, and just kept hammering through it. crikey it was a fun afternoon!!

My fav way to learn a cover isn't from the record .
The fun way is to get the acoustic out and thrash through the bits you remember between you all and that's it.
Chances are you have forgot the boring middle 8 or the change no one remembers .
If sad muso's can't remember a bit ,jo shmo in the boozer can't .
He just wants the catchy bit any way .

God I know some of you guys will get chest pains reading this , it's just another way of learning them .
I've done the less fun way to lol

My motto for covers " quick to the catchy bit "

That was pretty much the punchline to the story, with Plant doing a Johnny Rotten impression: "Oh let the sun shine down on my fauuushh..."

Just think of VH's "Pretty Woman" cover. It leaves out an entire section of the words and chords, yet succeeds nonetheless.

Or just listen to these guys..... they have made a career out of great cover tunes, usually specializing in making really bad songs sound better, such as the case here....

We're launching some new products at work, and need a fast, up tempo piece of music to go with a product video, so I volunteered to whip something together over the weekend.. and here it is..

    CLICK

It's no Unchained, but I'm pleased.. I really haven't been playing much lately so this was fun.
