My hate of programmed drums is well documented, but I broke down & checked out a 6-hour Eyal Levi tutorial on programming in EZdrummer and am starting to get it. The guy explains everything about how to alter loops to fit your needs, create your own, how to do drum mixes, MIDI editing, the whole deal. Very informative.
I was having trouble finding a beat in my sample library that worked for a certain track, but after watching that and having learned how to edit the MIDI itself I was able to get one working. For example, there was a (ratty sounding) cymbal crash on every 4 that I HATED... gone. Also added an extra hit in the fill that brings it back to the main riff so it worked. I still have to add an intro and some more fills, and I'd like to change it up in a couple of spots, but I like where it's going. And it was giving me fits before taking that course. Cool thing is once I figured out getting the mechanics of it down in Pro Tools getting this far from no drums took about a half an hour. Which means it's only going to get easier from here.

"Bubble" tracks by Jay Hale - Guitarist

The course is available on Creative live and is called Digital Drums with EZdrummer... highly recommend it...

Started working on a drum track, bar-by-bar for an older tune....had to since it switches to half-time in spots (and is possible because, click-track...lmao ) , still a work in progress but getting there.

J , I like the tune mate . Hard to get a proper grasp on the drums as they are a bit low in the mix . But I guess thats the point they dont stand out which is a good thing.

Thanks. With fresher morning ears listening back they were a little too low in the mix, so bumped 'em up a bit and uploaded a new MP3 (link didn't change). I still need to replace a couple of fills, and I may switch out the more splashy/crash cymbal thing for the more straight-ahead beat I alternated with in the main riff. Pretty much keeping the half-time parts, but will tweak them a bit. Still need to go into the MIDI and add some well-placed cymbal accents - like coming into the half-time sections - and fuck with the velocities a bit, but it's getting there.

I'm on a roll over here... things are going so well I decided to tackle probably the most orchestrated of my tunes, "Angry Girl", and re-doing the drums to it is giving it a whole new life... now the actual arrangement I intended stands out, kind of unmistakably so. The layering of the guitar tracks is more noticeable when the drum beat switches to half-time where it should, too - who knew? Bass track's still a place-keeper. I was going to re-do the leads but I've gotten quite a few compliments on the ones that are currently there, so I think I'm leaving them.

Since those went so well, I kept going... re-did the drums for another of the heavier ones:

and something on the lighter side:

I've got drums done for 2 more tunes as of tonight too, but one needs a bass line, and another I have to re-track a lead that got lost in the HD crash last year... fortunately I re-learned it off an the MP3 I bounced of it, just too burnt to record tonight.

Clearly getting the hang of the programming thing - this one didn't even have a place-keeper beat on it two hours ago, and because of the weird accents I had to chop fills in half and weird stuff like that, but it came together...done.

The plan was not to stay up til midnight tonight (again) but it's equally easy losing track of time doing drums as when you're doing guitar tracks it seems...

That "Without" thing isn't too bad...I kinda like it...

But, the "Faux jazz" track sounds like a Van Hagar cheese reject...

Thanks! Actually used a little bit of the beat-tweaking you taught me, and Eyal Levi's CreativeLive course was invaluable...I need to expand my library a bit more. I told the Toontrack people I was looking for more Bonham-esque beats and they suggested the "Rock Steady" EZX, picking that up. I also want "Rock!" and "Metal Machine" just to have the extra kits and beats. That would make a total of 9 expansion modules, probably not a lot I couldn't do then.

...I was also talking to Ken about some Head Case error messages I was getting too, so to test it I re-tweaked "The Intro"'s drums and the HC emulations fired up just fine... weirdness.

Thanks. Two, actually. The meat of the track is my old Ash Charvel mutt with the DIY Duncan Custom 8, and I doubled it with the Koa Warmoth with a JB, which I also used for the solo.

That's funny. The other day you said you clowns weren't bashing this site. I guess you thought about it and decided to give it a shot afterall. I don't pretend to speak for everyone on the site like you do but if you don't like it log out and go somewhere else sucky.

Why are you even here? Tweedle dee and tweedle dum getting together to make themselves feel better again? In case you didn't know...it's rather dry in VH land...of course there isn't a lot of traffic, ffs.

I thought you two were gone for good...

    Never.

I love my day job. [nights, actually]

And it is pretty funny to be lectured about "growing up" on a web site about a long-dead band

You're slipping dude. This is the post where you start wimpering about how I said something you didn't like and it's your duty as an elite Roth Army member to run me off the site. That's right, you don't give a fuck about the Army anymore. I guess this is goodbye then. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Ya'll don't come back now, ya hear?

And once again, she didn't read the fucking thread to see just who started talking smack. Just "Loungie and Jay bad, must lash out!" Pathetic.

Give me a break? You think I'm still here because of the band? If that was the case I wouldn't be here.

I'm in love with Sesh. Shhhh...

Maybe some of your long dead bands have a site. Why don't you go and find one.
