Post John Boehner: NO on Shutdown; YES on Entitlement Reform

    LINK

ABC's Jonathan Karl reports: In a speech to the National Association of Broadcasters Sunday night in Nashville, Speaker of the House John Boehner will address “the moral responsibility” to cut spending, reduce the deficit, avoid a government shutdown and also address spending on entitlements, such as Social Security and Medicare.

The speech comes just two days after House Republicans have proposed a new spending bill that appeared more likely than the previous bill to garner support from Democrats in the Senate and avoid a government shutdown. The government is set to shut down at the end of Friday March 4 if lawmakers cannot agree on a way to extend federal funding before then.

The Speaker’s press office has released excerpts of the speech Boehner will deliver tonight. There are two notable things here: 1) Boehner promises the Republican budget for 2012 will “specifically deal with entitlement reform” (something the Republican leadership, so far, has avoided); and, 2) unlike former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is now saying the 1995/96 shutdown was a good thing, Boehner insists he wants to avoid one.

“This is very simple: Americans want the government to stay open, and they want it to spend less money,” Boehner will say.

His entitlement reform promise comes with a whack at the White House: “To not address entitlement programs, as is the case with the budget the president has put forward, would be an economic and moral failure,” Boehner says. “By acting now, we can fulfill the mission of health and retirement security for all Americans without making changes for those in or near retirement. And we can keep the promises we have made to our children.”

Here are the rest of the excerpts:

On following the 'will of the people:'

“We have a moral responsibility to address the problems we face. That means working together to cut spending and rein in government – NOT shutting it down. The House has passed legislation – reflecting the will of the people – that would keep the government running through October while cutting spending. The leader of the United States Senate has refused to allow a vote on this legislation, so the House will pass a shorter-term bill that will also keep the government running while including reasonable spending cuts at the same time. This is very simple: Americans want the government to stay open, and they want it to spend less money. We don’t need to shut down the government to accomplish that. We just need to do what the American people are asking of us.”

On the economic and moral implications of Washington spending:

“Now surpassing $14.1 trillion, our national debt is on track to eclipse the size of our entire economy this year. In other words, we’re broke. Broke, going on bankrupt. Just as a bankrupt business has trouble creating jobs, so does a bankrupt country. … Yes, this debt is a mortal threat to our country. It is also a moral threat. It is immoral to bind our children to as leeching and destructive a force as debt. It is immoral to rob our children’s future and make them beholden to China. No society is worthy that treats its children so shabbily.”

    On entitlement spending:

“Our budget, under the leadership of our Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, will specifically deal with entitlement reform. To not address entitlement programs, as is the case with the budget the president has put forward, would be an economic and moral failure. By acting now, we can fulfill the mission of health and retirement security for all Americans without making changes for those in or near retirement. And we can keep the promises we have made to our children.”

On Republican efforts in the House to address debt and size of government:

“We have a moral responsibility to deal with this threat to freedom and liberate our economy from the shackles of debt and unrestrained government. Our new majority in the House began this work by humbling ourselves and finding ways to exercise frugality. We banned earmarks, which had become a symbol of a broken Washington. We replaced rules making it easy to increase spending with reforms making it easier to cut spending. We cut our own budgets by five percent. … Earlier this month, the House approved more than $100 billion in spending cuts compared to what President Obama requested for the current fiscal year. … Next month, we will propose cutting or eliminating wasteful mandatory spending programs. … And we’re fighting to end taxpayer funding for abortion once and for all … we’re working to protect life.”

    On government and internet:

“Our new majority in the House is committed to using every tool at our disposal to fight a government takeover of the Internet. Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan, the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, has pledged, in his words, to be ‘a dog to the Frisbee on this issue.’ … Congressman Greg Walden of Oregon, a former broadcaster himself, has introduced a congressional resolution of disapproval to reverse the FCC’s net neutrality rules. I’m pleased to report the House will act on this measure as early as next month.”

I agree with ending the wars, but the rich and everyone else are already taxed enough...

The spending needs to be reeled in...

Nonsensical and non-essential social programs need to be eliminated...

Defense spending needs to be cut...

Unions for government workers need to be eliminated...

Carbon footprints need to be forgotten about...

More power for state government - healthcare, job training, economic development, etc...

Federal pay needs to be frozen until the budget is reeled in...

Homeland security and NSA should be eliminated for good!

High speed rail should be forgotten about...

Eliminate the federal spending on green technology...

    That's just for starters...

Oh yeah, and eliminate your job, at least so you can see what real work feels like...

Warren Buffett doesn't think so. And he should know, being one of the richest guys on the planet. Even the shitbag who runs Gold Mansacks agrees....

    From The Times
    June 28, 2007
Buffett blasts system that lets him pay less tax than secretary
    Tom Bawden in New York

Warren Buffett, the third-richest man in the world, has criticized the US tax system for allowing him to pay a lower rate than his secretary and his cleaner.

Speaking at a $4,600-a-seat fundraiser in New York for Senator Hillary Clinton, Mr Buffett, who is worth an estimated $52 billion (£26 billion), said: “The 400 of us [here] pay a lower part of our income in taxes than our receptionists do, or our cleaning ladies, for that matter. If you’re in the luckiest 1 per cent of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99 per cent.”

Mr Buffett said that he was taxed at 17.7 per cent on the $46 million he made last year, without trying to avoid paying higher taxes, while his secretary, who earned $60,000, was taxed at 30 per cent. Mr Buffett told his audience, which included John Mack, the chairman of Morgan Stanley, and Alan Patricof, the founder of the US branch of Apax Partners, that US government policy had accentuated a disparity of wealth that hurt the economy by stifling opportunity and motivation.

The comments are among the most significant yet in a debate raging on both sides of the Atlantic about growing income inequality and how the super-wealthy are taxed.

They echo those made this month by Nicholas Ferguson, one of the leading figures in Britain’s private equity industry, when he criticized tax rates that left its multimillionaire venture capitalists “paying less tax than a cleaning lady”.

Last week senior members of the US Senate proposed to increase the rate of tax that private equity and hedge fund staff pay on their share of the profits, known as carried interest, from the 15 per cent capital gains rate to about 35 per cent.

Lloyd Blankfein, the chief executive of Goldman Sachs, acknowledged in an interview yesterday that there were justified concerns about the huge profits generated by private equity firms and that he worried that income inequality was “poisoning democracy”. He also said that he would be voting for the Democrat candidate at the next election. Mr Blankfein is the highest-paid executive on Wall Street, earning $54 million last year.

Mr Buffett, who runs the investment group Berkshire Hathaway and is widely regarded as the world’s most successful investor, said that he was a Democrat because Republicans are more likely to think: “I’m making $80 million a year – God must have intended me to have a lower tax rate.”

Mr Buffett said that a Republican proposal to eliminate elements of inheritance tax, which raises about $30 billion a year from the assets of about 12,000 rich families, would broaden the disparity between rich and poor. He added that the Republicans would seek to recover lost revenue by increasing taxes for the less prosperous.

He said: “You could take that $30 billion and give $1,000 to 30 million poor families. Or should you favour the 12,000 estates and make 30 million families pay an extra $1,000?”

And who gets to define what that means? You? John Boner? The KKKoch Brothers??

Bullshit. Unions are the last defense against predatory corporatism and teabagging lunacy.

Right.... because who the fuck needs a planet you can actually live on? Or the living wage jobs which could be created by upgrading this nation's infrastructure to the 21st fucking century.

The irony of this mentality is that the "red states" where the majority of teabaggers live are taking in far more Federal dollars than they are contributing in tax revenue. Be careful what you wish for.

No argument there. Also abolish the CIA, which never had a legitimate purpose from the day Prescott Bush and his buddies founded it.

i don't think it's a coincidence that "Kasich" rhymes with "prick."

not that i'm necessarily against teachers and other public employees picking up more of their benefit costs. i have to, why shouldn't they?

I really wouldn't give a shit if the US Federal Government shut down. I don't really get anything out of it. All it would mean is I wouldn't have to bother filing my taxes this year, I could get into Grand Teton and Yellowstone Park for free and drive a snowmobile through there like we used to do in the good old days. I think the biggest tragedy is nobody would be paid to pump the shit out of the US Forrest Service ran campground toilets.

They don't. They should have the right to strike. My problem with the right to work laws is they make striking illegal. You don't need a union to strike, you just need to have enough employees who agree to do it. I really don't think there are any good unions anymore. I belonged to two of them out of necessity and never got anything out of it other than less money for me.

One area the government could spend money and get it back long-term would be fixing and improving the infrastructure. The best thing the government did in the 1930's was build dams and bridges. We couldn't support the population we have in the west without them.

What I would do is give everyone on welfare a notice that they will be drafted into a national work program if they stay on welfare. If you are disabled and can't work you are exempt and can continue to get government assistance but if you can work you will be given proficiency tests and skills test to see what jobs you can do. This would at least give us some productive use for that welfare money and avoid the riots that would happen by just cutting people off.

I mean Hitler put people to work building cars and roads. People were digging through the trash looking for something to eat and Hitler put them to work and that ended. The problem was he started a war and that ruined everything. If Hitler didn't start the war and didn't do evil things to people Germany could have been successful. It's the Henry Ford model. You put people to work and you pay them enough to buy the products they make. You give them educational opportunities. Ford employees could take night classes to advance their learning. It worked.

Wars suck money and kill people and only the war profiteers and bankers win on that type of system. The problem with the US is after WWII we became such a huge war economy, it was decided in the 1960's we had to keep wars going to keep the economy going. We outsourced most our consumer goods manufacturing. We have gone onto the Soviet model but instead of a communist party running things, it's a collusion of corporations and government agencies. Our main industry is oil, war, and banking.

The best thing government can do is build the infrastructure that allows the free market to operate and level the playing field when it becomes unfair. Once you have that, if you have hard working, educated people, they will build the economy.

Funny you should say that because last year I paid more to the IRS than the Bank of America and General Electric combined which is kind of surprising.

Some would say maybe not entirely fair...

I agree with upgrading inffrastructure, but the Federal government does not exist to create social program and bureaucratic jobs with six figure salaries and pensions and benefits that are out of reach for the average taxpayer...

    it's disgustingly unfair...

Yup. They are going to be awarded nice big contracts from the government without a proper bidding process and be the only man standing when other competitors are eliminated by government regulation.

Their appliances that in the past were very good are now shit as well. If you want a decent washer you have to buy German now and a Miele isn't and more than a Mexican made GE piece of shit.

That's what's causing the whole spat. The private sector employees got cut first in jobs, pay, and benefits while the government sector have not and the private sector are paying the taxes. I think we might see a real tax revolt here pretty soon. It will just snap overnight like it did in Egypt. Nobody wants to be the first to stick their head out but once they realize they have a lot of friends, they go for it. Now after Wikileaks and Egypt the politicians are scrambling for an internet kill switch It's going to be fun to watch the boat spring more and more leaks and Obama trying to plug them all.

Fascism is when the government and corporate interests combine into one entity. Like Nazi Germany. I'm don't like that kind of system. I pretty much like as much free market as possible and the government should have the role of keeping the markets free and fair and building infrastructure that allows business to operate. What happened here in the US is small businesses got hampered with so many regulations, taxes, and fees, they couldn't compete with the big corporations that like you said, don't pay taxes.

We used to have interesting main streets with a variety of small shops and stores. Now it's Walmart. We used to have wonderful butcher shops and farmer's markets. Right now our local dairies are being harassed and ran out of business by government agencies.

So I'm totally against fascism because it is what has ruined this country.

It didn't work in the Soviet Union. Deng Shao Peng in 1978 admitted China had to try something else. A good friend of mine in Shanghai said it's more capitalistic there than California or Massachusetts now. Socialism might work if you are sitting on a shit load of oil but it's so expensive it breaks countries over time. A lot of people in Europe are going to get a rude awakening because many governments there like the UK are broke and the social welfare is now an unfunded liability. It will be the last to go because the politicians know what will happen when it does. But hell, I can see why people thought it was great, you could live better in the UK on the dole than in other countries working, but now the money to run that is gone.

One thing I'd like the government is to support small business and create an environment where a local business can stand on it's own and be able to make ends meet with healthy competition with overseas companies...

Huge tariffs should be imposed on the junk that is flooding the market from China...

I for one am willing to pay more for a quality item...

A fair playing field encourages quality and competition...

So you admit there are no private sector jobs available, and yet you want public employees to lose their jobs?

And even then, you would probably oppose them getting unemployment compensation.

Exactly how the fuck do you propose that people earn a living?

I don't know, but you can't keep paying people with money that is not there...

You seem to have zero ability to let that sink in...

So you agree with me that all taxes and regulations should be rolled back to 1980 levels, and that all "too big to fail" corporations should be broken up by the courts, as Republican President Teddy Roosevelt would have done?

Because that (along with the tarriffs) is the only thing that is going to allow small business to have anything approximating a fair playing field.

Obamacare is affordable health care? Maybe you should read the law and see how much it's going to cost us. I told Ford I might go for single payer if it's paid for out of the military budget. Right now small businesses don't provide health care because they can't afford to do so. Obamacare will force them to but they will just pay the $2000 penalty on each employee so they still won't have healthcare but the employer will have to pay all that money.

The real problem is across the board corruption. You can't trust the insurance companies and you can't trust the current government. As things stand now, you are really on your own. It's the old west again.

There should be no such thing as too big to fail...

GM should have been left on their own, for instance...
