Blind Taste Test...sam Vs. Dave!!

I just did a BLIND TASTE TEST for Van Halen.

A lifelong friend of mine has been getting into Van Halen recently...he's never been a fan before. He told me maybe he likes Dave more because it's just the classic stuff...the original albums. I told him, "Nope. Dave is just the better vocalist...more creative. Better presence...better lyrics." So I decided to test my friend by playing him two "newer" Van Halen songs.

He sat quietly and listened to two songs he had not heard before. I played him IT'S ABOUT TIME and ME WISE MAGIC. My friend is very opinionated and very honest and was not a Van Halen fan until the past few weeks. And after both songs were finished, he said calmly, "I really like the second one. It's awesome."

"Which one?" I asked.

"Oh, the ME WISE MAGIC one," he answered.

"The one with Roth," I confirmed.

"Oh the voice was so much cooler on that one. And the chorus is really catchy!"

"What about the other one?" I asked, my eyes slightly rolling.

"I just don't like it," he said simply. "It's pure crap. It's really generic. The singing is stupid. The music is generic, but the singing ruins it. I don't like that guy."

My friend isn't even much of a hard rock fan...the closest he comes to hard rock is Neil Young (cool too!). But with a BLIND TASTE TEST...he knows who's the man! :p

Uh...yeah. I've heard it. I've heard every Van Halen song. I like Ed's playing. I own every album. But I no longer listen to the Hagar stuff much. I've ALWAYS preferred Dave...about 1000 times more. The singing basically gets in the way of the music on the Hagar stuff.

A few years ago at the cottage, I played the entire BEST OF CD to some friends of mine. Most of them knew Van Halen, but one of my friends didn't, and his exact words were, "Apart from that Twister song and the last two songs, the CD got very weak after the first half." And I agreed with him. I like HUMANS BEING because it's basically Ed. But I didn't even tell him which singer was which, etc.
