The "Only In Florida" Police Blotter - Living Proof That Hell Is Other People

For one odd reason or another, just about every major national news story has ties to or originated in Florida. Be it embarrassing, horrific, insipid or just fucking strange, more often than not the roots are formed here. A cursory glance at a map reveals the state to be shaped much like a penis. This would suggest that by and large, the local residents are dicks. I would include myself in this category, primarily for being too moronic to have left the area screaming in abject horror by now. Then again, I'm probably immune to it all by at this point.

Or so I thought. Reading the following article in my local paper this morning, it dawned upon me that others should be warned about exactly what goes on around here. So for those that do not live here, thank your lucky stars. And for those that do, I feel your pain. Sartre was correct - "Hell is other people."

Men stabbed when sign language mistaken for gang signs

    Ihosvani Rodriguez Sun Sentinel

MIRAMAR— Two hearing-impaired men are recovering from stab wounds they suffered when a patron of a Hallandale Beach bar apparently mistook their sign language for gang signs.

Neither Alfred Stewart nor the other man, whose name could not be confirmed, could be reached for comment on Tuesday, four days after the attack at Ocean's Eleven Lounge. But Stewart's mother, Brenda Stewart, had a lot to say.

She is still livid over the incident that sent her 31-year-old son to the hospital, where he spent more than two days. A knife wound across the upper left side of his back required about 20 stitches to close.

"If I was there [at the bar], things would've been really ugly," said Stewart, 51, of Miramar. "I don't know if they were drunk or stupid, but how can you confuse sign language as a gang sign?"

According to Stewart, her son met up with several of his friends for a birthday get-together — not his — on Friday night at the bar in the 800 block of Federal Highway.

Most of the friends are graduates of Miami Central High School in Miami-Dade, where they took classes for the hearing impaired.

Alfred Stewart told his mother that a woman approached the group at the bar and yelled at them, but since they could not comprehend what she was saying, they paid little attention to her. The woman left the bar and returned moments later with a man carrying a knife.

"He doesn't remember much [about] what happened," Brenda Stewart said of her son. "He only remembers everyone fighting and then he ran to the bathroom, where he noticed blood all over his shirt."

Stewart's son, who became deaf following an illness when he was 4, was resting at home on Tuesday with a sore back. He works for a Coral Gables restaurant, she said.

A woman who answered the phone at Ocean's Eleven on Tuesday said the bar's bouncer tried to break up the fight but was hit on the head with a beer bottle. The bouncer, who was not seriously hurt, was back at work the next evening, added the woman, who declined to give her name.

She said police arrived quickly and arrested the man and woman who started the fight.

"What happened here was stupid, very stupid," she said before hanging up.

Hallandale Beach police charged Barbara Lee, 45, with aggravated battery causing bodily harm, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and probation violation, according to court records.

They also arrested Marco Ibanez, 19, who is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Both were listed as incarcerated at the Broward County Main Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

Hallandale Beach police could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. They told other news outlets that the suspects believed the victims had been flashing gang signs.

Shana Williams, a psychologist at the Center for Hearing and Communication in Fort Lauderdale, called the incident "bizarre." She said it is not rare, however, for hearing-impaired people to be caught up in angry confrontations.

"Most of the time it's someone thinking they are being made fun of through sign language, or being mimicked," she said. "But I've never heard of something that has led to such violence."

just to let you know that you are NOT alone.....
(and I apologize up front for the lack of pics, etc)...

here in the Mid-West a woman is undergoing a trial this week because, as she got a new boyfriend, she decided that she was afraid to reveal that she had a child with Down's Syndrome....
told him about her other 2 children,
and pulled a "Flowers in the Attic" trick, hiding the boy from everyone.

Thank goodness the womans PARENTS had the nerve to step in and call for an investigation.....
and thanks to a "heads up " officer
(they are so few and far in between around these parts)

who noted that when questioned, the younger brother kept looking at the ceiling,

the boy with Down's Syndrome was found, nearly dead,
and the mother is being charged w/ not only the standard charges of abuse,
neglect and child endangerment, but w/ attempted murder.

Anyway.....Florida does not see to be alone in their......own little version of hell
it seems to have spread ....

Bartow teacher charged with drug possession

    Submitted by Eric Glasser, WTSP.com

    Bartow, Florida --
A Polk County high school teacher was Tasered by police and arrested for drug possession on Monday.

Bartow police say they pulled over 33-year-old Bradley Gummow for a traffic stop shortly before 11 a.m. at the intersection of Polk Street and Baker Avenue.

While talking with Gummow, cops say they observed a plastic bag in his mouth and called in a K-9 unit.

Police say when they asked Gummow what was in his mouth, the suspect turned and refused to cooperate with officers.

Gummow allegedly began resisting police until he was shot with a Taser stun gun. He then spit out what turned out to be five individual bags containing marijuana, weighing a total of 4.7 grams.

Gummow is an 11th and 12th grade teacher at Bartow High School, assigned to teach International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement students.

Before Monday's arrest, Gummow was on probation for reckless driving involving alcohol. He is now charged with possession of marijuana, violation of probation, and resisting an officer without force or violence.

Atheist Official Wachs Charged With Simulating Sex Act

By Jason Geary & Matthew Pleasant THE LEDGER

LAKELAND | In her second arrest this year, the Atheists of Florida's legal coordinator was jailed Sunday on a charge of simulating a sex act in the presence of a 10-year-old boy.

Ellenbeth Wachs, 48, of Lakeland, is accused of purposely making noises from inside her home March 13 to pretend as if she were having sex while the boy and his father overheard, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Wachs made the noise in an effort to make the boy stop playing basketball outside her house on Lake Victoria Drive, a complaint affidavit says. She told him to stop shooting baskets because she was trying to sleep.

A Polk County sheriff's detective began investigating after the boy's father, Otto Lehman, filed for an injunction for protection against Wachs in April.

A complaint affidavit says the boy played basketball near Wachs' home about 8:30 a.m. and she yelled through an open window for him to stop.

Lehman and his son, Forrest, returned later and she started to yell "Oh John," repeating it "over and over again and kept increasing the volume until it was a loud scream," according to the complaint affidavit.

Wachs was also moaning and making other sounds that "sounded like a woman experiencing sexual gratification in an extremely loud fashion," the affidavit says. She continued until the father and son left.

On March 3, Wachs was jailed on a charge that she posed as a licensed lawyer. She remained at the Polk County Jail on Tuesday without bail for being arrested while on bail for the previous charge.

John Liguori, a lawyer representing Wachs, said he would schedule a hearing to argue that his client should be released. Wachs, who has multiple sclerosis, requires several types of medication, and her medical needs cannot be properly met while in jail, Liguori said.

He said the State Attorney's Office is using a dispute between neighbors to further prosecute Wachs.

She was trying to get rest after having chemotherapy when she asked the boy to stop playing basketball, Liguori said. He said Wachs was calling to a friend inside her home for help with taking medication.

"There is no simulation of a sex act here," he said. "The kid didn't see anything. Moaning is not a sex act. There is no evidence that a sex act was occurring."

He accused Assistant State Attorney Brad Copley of targeting Wachs on behalf of those who oppose her personal, religious and political views. "For him to deal with something like this is just an extraordinary waste of resources," Liguori said.

In court Monday, Copley denied that Wachs' beliefs were at issue. "We certainly live in a society where a little boy can go outside and shoot hoops," Copley said.

Attempts to reach the Lehmans were unsuccessful.

Woman accused of using fradulent cards in spending spree, hiding cards in her private parts

    news-press.com

Lee County, FloridaA Pompano Beach woman is in custody at the Lee County Jail for possession of a counterfeit driver's license and a fraudulent credit card, which she allegedly hid inside her vagina.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Ann Marie Hernandez,46, was arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 on Friday night when deputies discovered thousands of dollars in items bought with a fraudulent credit card aboard her vehicle.

Members of the Highway Interdiction Unit pulled her vehicle over at about 7 p.m.

Upon making contact with the driver, the detective immediately noticed the vehicle was full of high-end power tool equipment, some of which still had security tags attached.

As the investigation unfolded, a detective determined the items were recently purchased at a Cape Coral Home Depot using a fraudulent credit card account.

Home Depot was contacted and Citibank confirmed the fraudulent transactions totaling more than five-thousand dollars. Nearly half of the fraudulent items purchased were recovered during the traffic stop.

After a female deputy was called to the scene, Hernandez admitted to concealing a fraudulent credit card and fraudulent Florida driver’s license inside her vagina.

Police arrest man accused of urinating on cough drops at Walgreens

    By Walter Pacheco, Orlando Sentinel

Police said Larry Donell White Jr. walked up to Aisle 8 of a Sanford Walgreens, unzipped his pants and urinated on an assortment of cough drops.

Sanford officers arrested White at police headquarters Thursday after a tip led them to interview him about the allegations.

Although White admitted to "having frequented several local Walgreens in the past," he did not confess to the crime.

Detectives also presented him with a surveillance recording showing a person resembling White. He became evasive and denied the accusations, the report shows.

A statement from Sgt. David Morgenstern of the Sanford Police Department summed up the case with the following observation: "So the question remains, why did he do it? Guess we'll never know."
Video: Behind the scenes of the Bin Laden raid

The arrest report shows White entered the Walgreens in the 200 block of South French Street around 10:23 p.m. April. 21.

The pharmacy's recording system caught him walking through the cough-drop aisle. He was observed unzipping his pants and urinating on the lozenges.

Police said White caused about $301 in damages.

He faces charges of criminal mischief with property damage over $200 and crimes against a person with culpable negligence. He left the Seminole County Jail after paying a $550 bond.

I hate getting my .45 Sig dirty, but she would have most definitely needed a cleaning after that bullshit if I was there.
Many people are just rabid animals that need to be put down like Old Yeller. For the gun haters... If your mom and dad were the deaf couple at the table and I defended their lives with my Dirty Harry like open can of whoop ass you fucking KNOW your ass would appreciate a gun being pulled out of nowhere by one of the good guys.

Gang signs?!I got your fucking gang signs you filthy animals...

And, strangely enough, many of them have a liquor store. No, I am not joking. Pick up your prescription, along with something to wash it down with in one convenient location.

It's so true! I've had this conversation with a buddy not long ago. It seems that just about any ridiculous thing that happens happens in Florida. What the fuck?? I've always said 'welcome to Florida, it's not the heat it's the stupidity.'

I read the sign language/gang sign story also and was just shocked and impressed with a new level of stupid.

Man Nabbed At Home Depot After Trying To Cut Off Handcuffs

Escambia County, Fl. - A handcuffed suspect in Florida escaped police custody and fled to a Pensacola Home Depot, where he was spotted shortly after shopping for bolt-cutters.

"He was caught after he stole some items from a [hardware store] to remove the cuffs with," Sena Maddison, a spokeswoman with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office told Weird News.

Michael Jay Scott, 19, was first arrested by police in Pensacola early Monday morning, when he was involved in a disturbance with an unidentified homeowner whom he had previously been warned not to have contact with, according to Maddison.

    The genius in question...

"He engaged in a fight with the homeowner and upon deputies' arrival, [he] fled on foot," Maddison said. "He was caught after a brief foot chase."

Scott received several injuries to his face and body during the alleged fight. As a result, the arresting officers transported him to Sacred Heart Hospital for a medical examination. It was during his hospital stay, police said, that Scott sneaked out of his room and escaped the building undetected.

Multiple law enforcement officers and K-9 units were dispatched to the area to search for Scott. His whereabouts remained a mystery until roughly 10 a.m., when staff at a Home Depot about a mile from the hospital called police to report suspicious activity.

"While en-route, dispatch advised that a suspicious person was trying to use bolt cutters to cut off handcuffs," deputy Michael Williams wrote in his police report.

After allegedly failing to cut off the cuffs, Scott, apparently sensing he might have attracted some unwanted attention, fled out the back of the store. The fugitive then scaled a perimeter fence and ran into a local neighborhood, police said.

Contacted by Weird News, a Home Depot manager confirmed that the bizarre bolt cutter incident took place inside his store, but declined to comment further.

Police said a K-9 unit managed to track Scott to a nearby camper he had allegedly broken into. When police took him into custody, he was still wearing the handcuffs that had been placed on his wrists earlier that day. Authorities also found a small nail file and a screwdriver -- items Scott had allegedly stolen from Home Depot to try to get the cuffs off, Maddison said.

Scott was transported back to Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment. This time, however, he remained in the custody of law enforcement. Scott was treated, released and then transported to Escambia County Jail. He has been charged with felony larceny and burglary, as well as misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and damage to property.

Warning: Walking on a Florida street may be dangerous

    Yahoo/Reuters

WASHINGTONWarning to pedestrians -- Walking down the street in Florida could be hazardous to your health.

Several major cities in the state -- Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami-Fort Lauderdale -- took the top spots on a list of the most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians published by a U.S. transportation reform group on Tuesday.

The "Dangerous by Design" report, produced by Transportation for America, ranked cities with populations over a million people in terms of the danger to pedestrians relative to the amount of walking in a given area.

Riverside, California, Las Vegas, Memphis, Phoenix, Houston, and Dallas filled out the top ten in that order.

The author of the report emphasized the role of planning in the dangerous cities for pedestrians.

The common factor urban sprawl, low-density areas that are organized around wide, high-speed streets known as arterials.

Most of the over 47,700 pedestrian fatalities during the last decade were on these arterial roads, researcher Michelle Ernst said.

Racial minorities and seniors are more likely to be victims of pedestrian fatalities, the report also highlighted.

Transportation for America advocates for federal transportation reform that mandates the complete use of streets, that is a transportation system that facilitates use by pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, motorists, and those using public transportation.

The best cities for pedestrians according to the same list are Boston, Cleveland, New York, and Pittsburgh.

I always enjoyed going to the Ft. Meyers area. They had some great undeveloped beaches just south of there. Now it's a line of high rise condos as far as you can see. I also noticed there was more riff raff rolling around than there used to be. Florida just suffers from the same urban sprawl and assholes moving in that every other place suffers from.

No doubt, but the west coast of florida is MUCH nicer and newer then the east, IMO... I love the white sand beaches and the people just seem nicer as well. I'm sure it has to do with being far from Miami.

I never cared for Miami. What's nice is for snobs and then it's rot. Daytona and the Orlando area is too touristy. I never made it up to Jacksonville or the panhandle. Tampa seemed boring. I really enjoyed Ft. Meyers and that area for just a low key get away from it all type place. But I've seen Florida completely change.

The place that amazing has changed very little is Maui. That has changed surprisingly little since the early 70's. They don't make koa outriggers on the beach like they used to and some big hotels have popped up but the town and the beach are amazingly the same.

Arrested man: 48 beers was about 10 too many

HUDSON, Florida (AP) -- A man told Pasco County Sheriff's deputies he had about 10 beers too many as he celebrated his birthday.

Fifty-eight-year-old James Taylor says he drank 48 beers on Thursday evening, prompting a stern lecture from a deputy for causing a disturbance at Hudson Beach.

Officials say Taylor, a transient, left the beach. But he came back, and officials say this time he caused such a ruckus that he scared a woman and her young grandchildren.

An arrest report states that Taylor exposed his genitals and "urinated in the middle of the sand."

He also continued to shout profanities.

A deputy returned to the beach, arrested Taylor and took him to the Land O'Lakes jail. He is charged with disorderly intoxication in a public place and causing a disturbance.

48 beers?? This guy should get some sort of award!

Boynton Officer of the Year indicted on drug charges

David Britto, 28, accused of peddling methamphetamine

The Boynton Beach Police department's 'Officer of the Year' for 2010 was indicted on Tuesday for conspiring to possess and traffic 500 grams of methamphetamine, according to U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer.

The indictment accuses David Britto, 28, of drug dealing from June 2009 until March 4, 2011. Britto faces a potential life sentence if convicted, prosecutors said.

Police Chief G. Matthew Immler released a statement saying, in part, "the Boynton Beach Police Department vigorously polices itself, and this case is an example of how law enforcement roots out corruption from within its own ranks."

Officer Britto was named 'Officer of the Year' in January for, among other things, helping to identify a man suspected of shooting two street preachers and for performing CPR on a 2-year-old girl who almost drowned in her family's swimming pool in November.

"I saw the little baby on the ground and started praying," Britto said, recounting the life-saving effort at a December reunion with Elionore Dieujuste and her daughter, Vitalice, who made a full recovery.

Britto said at the beginning of last year, he took out a pen and a piece of paper and wrote down that on every call he wanted to make a difference in someone's life.

"It is nice to be recognized when you have really tried your best," he said upon receiving the 'Officer of the Year' honor. "This only motivates me to keep doing what I'm doing and reach my goals."

In 2010, Britto also worked 11 burglaries resulting in 19 arrests and 18 narcotic cases leading to 25 arrests, records show.

In 2008, Britto was one of three Boynton Beach police officers who fired 23 shots into a stolen Dodge Caravan as the vehicle's driver tried to run them down, investigators said.

None of the officers or the seven suspects in the van was injured, according to the police report.

Britto has been a Boynton Beach police officer since September 2006, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database.

He was caught in a Drug Enforcement Administration led Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force investigation.

"The decision to deal drugs while carrying a badge is not only a breach of the law enforcement oath, but a community tragedy as well," DEA Mark R. Trouville,Miami Special Agent in Charge said in a statement.

Chief Immler echoed that sentiment in his statement.

"We realize that when an officer stands accused of a violation of the public trust, all of law enforcement pays the price in eroded citizen confidence and the perception of diminished integrity," Immler said.

VAiN, did you see that story over the weekend about the cop who took a girl for a spin on his ATV at the beach at 5AM, ran over two people and wound up fleeing the scene?

Fla. officers fired after on-duty ATV crash

Officer Derick Kuilan took a woman for a ride on his department-issued ATV, crashing the ATV and injuring the woman and two beachgoers

    By PoliceOne Staff

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — City officials have fired two South Florida officers after one crashed his ATV while on duty Sunday.

Officer Derick Kuilan took a woman for a ride on his department-issued ATV, which ended in a crash just before dawn that injured the woman and two beachgoers.

Adelee Sharie Martin, the passenger, was not authorized by the department to ride the ATV, police said.

An investigation confirmed that Kuilan and a second officer, Rolando Gutierrez, were at the Clevelander hotel on South Beach before the accident Sunday, according to WSVN.

"They were in a place where they were not supposed to be during working hours," Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower said.

Kuilan and Gutierrez were fired because of "conduct unbecoming an officer" and for actions amounting to "dereliction of duties," Miami Beach Police Department said in a statement.

Kuilan and Gutierrez were both tested for their blood-alcohol levels, but no results have been released, NBC Miami reported.

"We do not tolerate, in Miami Beach, something like that happening," Bower said.

Beachgoers Kitzie Nicanor and Luis Almonte are currently recovering from their injuries at local hospitals.

Kuilan, who has been with the department since 2005, could face criminal charges.

Okay, I have never been in Florida but this story reminds me of a personal story I will share with you guys.

At age 15 I got busted for shoplifting at Target. A fucking Bic lighter and 2 cassette tapes (Ozzy & Whitesnake). Anyways, security took me into the room and called Mom down. they threatened to call police but didn't. So what they did was release me to my Mom but took my picture. They said it would be posted in the security room of every target worldwide and I was BANNED FOR LIFE from ALL Target stores.

Flash-forward to age 19. I am working as a cashier for Target in the same city. I catch a lady that swapped the scanning sticker on a $300 bread maker with a $2 tackle box. Anyways, now my picture is up in the employee break room as........

    wait for it......

    wait for it.......

remember I am banned for life for shoplifting............

    wait for it.........

    wait for it...................

One of the 12 jurors who acquitted Casey Anthony of first-degree murder told ABC News that she didn't think there was enough evidence to convict the Florida mother of killing her 2-year-old.

Jennifer Ford, or juror No. 3, said the jurors were "sick to their stomach" after coming to the decision. "I did not say she was innocent," Ford, a 32-year-old nursing student told ABC. "I just said there was not enough evidence. If you cannot prove what the crime was, you cannot determine what the punishment should be."

Ford also explained why the jury opted against speaking to the media right after the verdict was announced. "It was emotional and we weren't ready. We wanted to do it with integrity and not contribute to the sensationalism of the trial."

Earlier, an alternate juror also defended the not guilty verdict. Russell Huekler, who did not play a part in deciding the case but sat through the trial, told NBC's TODAY that the prosecution had failed to prove the murder charge beyond a reasonable doubt.

"I definitely agree that they (jurors) did get it right. I support that decision whole-heartedly," he said, speaking from St. Pete Beach, Florida.

And you're an idiot...you probably thought OJ was innocent too I'll bet...
( funny how the "innocent" ones pick a judge and jury trial but never testify on their own behalf - argue the system all you want but at the end of the day, you just can't teach common sense...)
